me, at y'all talking about how this has the potential to make people The Most Mad: it's not like they'll pick one of the two topics I both give a shit about and know enough about to get mad about adal: so, EELS! me: fuck. To keep it short, (yes, this *is* the short version) adal, mate, *western* people didn't know about the eel lifecycle and were obsessed with their testicles. māori absolutely knew they grew from glass eels/elvers (and are also what cause the moon to wane in māori mythology!) And while the spawning grounds of the european eel were *precisely* located in 2022 and tracked and recorded, it was pretty much known what they did and where. Egg scattering is a common way fish fertilize eggs! And eels have semi-recently been induced to spawn in captivity by using hormones. However, the conflicting reports you were seeing on captive spawning are due to what has been called "eel farming" *until* those methods were developed really being eel *rearing* after capturing them at the glass eel/elver stage. Overfishing of eels is a huge problem. The survival rate of glass eels is small, so arguments have been made that by harvesting them at that stage, they are simply removing and raising fish that would have died anyway. However, that is only true if a significant portion are still available to make it through the non-human early life threats. So uh, maybe don't eat eel that's been commercially caught/reared. (Which is a damn shame because eel is delicious.) Bonus eel fact: female New Zealand longfin eels can live up to 60 years, there is no known trigger for them to move to the final stage in their lifecycle, happening from when the females are 20 and males are 13.

I loved this one! I'm sad that Erin's topic gave her existential dread, though. I feel like this could be a fun format without making any of the hosts feel bad, depending on the topics chosen. To me it has the vibes of the Dropout show Smartypants, only you did actual research.

Another physicist here who did a phd in computational astrophysics and knows a ton about black holes, Erin you did a fantastic job! My supervisor was one of the leads in taking the black hole picture and we read a bunch of those papers about Interstellar (yes there were scientific papers published about it!) since the same physics was used in the modelling.

Thought Erin might be interested to know that we actually HAVE taken a picture of a black hole (the one in the center of our galaxy!), using the Event Horizon Telescope in 2019!
