As promised, here's the new costume for the next roleplay! It was made from a sketch based on historical dresses and movie costumes from ‘Lady Macbeth’ and ‘Jane Eyre’ (2011), you can find the sketching video by clicking here.
The roleplay will probably take place in 1847 and you'll be treated to some kind of spooky (but relaxing) séance, led by a troubled but bold character.
I have to admit that some parts of the dress weren't exactly how I wanted them, and choosing fabric from a distance is definitely something I won't do again (it's a lovely colour and looks good in the photos / videos, but the feel really isn't authentic at all). But on the whole, I'm quite happy with the end result, which I wanted to be classic and a little stern.
I chose to have a boned bodice so that I wouldn't have to wear a corset - I have a high waist and corsets tend to crush my chest, I can't breathe - so I don't have that typical mid-19th century ‘slim’ waistline but my ego will eventually get over it 😅
The collar is pretty but unfortunately I soon realised it was made of polyester and I'm thinking of replacing it with a vintage cotton lace collar, let me know what you think! 🤔
(and oh, don't pay attention to my hair here!)
I've now got almost everything I need for this video, so I'm starting to dress the set and the script is taking shape. I'm really having fun with this project and I think the video will be out on 27 October. In the meantime, a "cosy basic" will be published next week, Wednesday (hair styling) :)

Beautiful! A while ago I think you asked about recommendations for haunting type movies or images. I suggest he original 1963 version of The Haunting, with Rosemary Harris; it was frightening and spooky but used subtlety to achieve it.

Thank you, yes the weird / "plastic" shine is exactly what bothers me! The fabric isn't very warm, surprisingly, but next time I'll stick to my rule of never choosing a fabric containing synthetics! 😄

I think a cotton lace collar would be lovely. The shine on this one is a bit odd. But I do love the details of the dress. What is the fabric? Oh, I see it’s wool and polyester. Whoof, sounds hot!

I am sure you intended these pictures to look like beautiful paintings from the time period. But if you didn't, in my opinion they do look like paintings.. I love the colors and the shadows. I thought you might be covering the subject of Beast of Gévaudan but that was 100 years earlier. Can't wait to see what you have cooked up for us.

Thank you! I was looking for wool with a nice pattern here, which was quite tricky for this kind of dress (in the end it's a wool-polyester blend I think), and if I had to do it again, I would simply go for my favourite timeless fabric: linen!

Merci pour l'avis sur le col :) J'ai déjà eu un corset sur mesure, malheureusement le résultat était le même : impossible de le serrer un tant soit peu sans me couper la respiration... Soit je ne suis pas tombée sur la bonne couturière, soit le faire faire à distance n'était pas une bonne idée, soit... Je ne suis tout simplement pas assez fine ;) Si vous avez une bonne adresse de couturière spécialisée, je suis toujours preneuse !

La robe est parfaite, et le col ne me choque pas particulièrement, en ce qui me concerne ! Et pour les corsets, ils doivent être faits sur-mesure, et ils deviennent alors très confortables (j'en porte un régulièrement, et je finis par l'oublier !) - c'est un investissement, mais qui peut valoir le coup/coût si vous avez l'intention de faire plusieurs personnages dans ce thème-là !

Amazing!!! I am dipping my toes into costume design and you are such an inspiration. Sourcing fabrics is definitely extremely hard, especially if you’re looking for period accurate cloth that doesn’t break the bank 🥲 My first thought was “Jane Eyre!” before even reading the caption, you pull this off so beautifully. ✨
