It's been a moment, hasn't it? I've been busy with some behind-the-scenes stuff, some non YouTube music stuff, and in general life away from the screen, so sorry uploads haven't been as frequent. But hopefully this one was worth some of the wait! A little video essay on a rhythmic puzzle in James Brown's I Got You. This was a fun one to make, covering linguistic stress, metric stress, and how syncopation can screw up perception of both.
Or rather...how syncopation defies metric stress as defined by the musical intuition of Western European traditions.
