Ihe other way around. It seems to gather exp relative to the person holding it. Empowering a low level person and having them kill monsters may be the best way to fill it. Its use is either for Vivi to kill cataclysm monsters to fill it and level up Saffra, or for Saffra to fill it, using the Codex and killing Monsters 200 levels above her level and level up Vivi.

The Exit Strategy

Ah... An Exp Share item. It makes sense since a single level to Vivi is comparably less useful than the hundreds of levels that would potentially impart to another in her guild.

I know this comes from the cataclysm and all, but doesn't this artifact also seem pretty damn evil to yall? Dont get me wrong, the codex definitely has room to be abused, an evil asshole could lock people in a prison and force them to fill pages, basically make them mana batteries, but in the end, thats not the books fault, its just a mana storage device. This chalice directly and forcefully steals the xp from whoever is holding it when they kill something. Imagine being forced to hold on to this thing as a low level and kill shit all day, every day, until this thing is full. Seems way more abusable and evil if put in the wrong hands

My opinion, this feels like a complex gamer's MacGuffin for a cheat code to me. "[Up arrow, Up arrow, start, B, B, A] or Rumpelstiltskin spelt backwards. Wishing for more emotion: loves, hates, interactions, and cares to drive the story. I am guessing that these are meant to be foreshadowing -"Chekov's gun" plot devices, but too many and too complex ones distract from plot and character growth. FYI: There is a King's Quest game reference in my comment.

I'm gonna be real, I miss the actual technique and tutoring sections still

Hey ArcaneCadence, idk whether you take suggestions since you remain pretty uninteractive, but I’d love to see more of Aeris and maybe even his POV. Would he be invited to vanguard, if only as a teacher or something? What would he think of the artifacts? What did he do whe Vivisari bandaged up the Prismarche wound? He’s one of my favorite characters, and regardless of if you take suggestions, I’m looking forward to more of him!

squish

It says lvl2000lvl0 on inspect, which could be a meter or range. Vivi's already over 2000

Thanks for the chapter!

If the exp going into the cup is something like % of a level, this could actually level up vivi, which is insane,

TFTC!

I think Saffra didn't get any exp from using the codex. I recall Vivi ruling out power leveling her apprentice using the codex.

Stephen Hill

It's an EXP Share. Basically means that Vivi - for whom XP is functionally meaningless - can pump levels into her more elite guildmates.

Narf

Kinda underwhelming item? Am I missing something here? The Codex' usefulness was immediatly apparent, this one's less so. Either they use it to quickly raise the level of low-level people, which is really lame and then you have a bunch of level 1000 people with the knowledge and skill level of a level 50 running about. Or they'll use it to have lower level people who can still gain plenty XP from normal critters to feed Vivi (who needs cataclysm-level opponents to gain XP) experience droplet by droplet. Certainly her XP requirements between levels are huge now.

Astral Aion

More likely for Vivi to power level others I imagine it would fill rapidly if she slaughtered another void breach and then she could use that to give people xp from lvl 1700+ monsters

Dalth

Am I the only one wondering how it interacts with the Codex? A massive well of mana, let Saffra overcharge a fire spell against some more ice elementals, and then the essence drains into the Chalice? Yeah, that could give results really, really fast.

Richard Kenan

This seems, above all else, to be a useful tool for figuring out exactly how experience works. For power leveling, the fact that high level people seem to fill it less - or at least Vivi does - hinders its utility. But it might allow Saffra to power level Vivi, which would be absurd. 10 levels per leveling session for Saffra is astounding progress. 10 levels for Vivi is the difference between an apocalypse and... not an apocalypse. But regardless, the fact that there's only a single Chalice does limit its potential impact. It's going to be less than overwhelming when only a single person can be filling it at a time. Not like an army of followers can channel experience to a single individual. But for research purposes, the ability to have an actual way to quantify experience seems amazing. By letting different people drink from the Chalice, we can tell if Vivi actually didn't earn any meaningful experience from that monster, or if she didn't earn enough to be meaningful to *HER*. Is that tiny amount she put in the Chalice truly tiny, or just super concentrated. Is Saffra's overflowing Chalice a full level's worth of experience, or just a full level's worth for her? Learning seems like the real reward here. Also, this might be the point where Vivi's instincts are proven wrong. She's been confident that Saffra will benefit from leveling quickly and filling out her more scholarly and practical knowledge later when she is backed up by those levels, but power leveling her to Titled range with no time to gain the appropriate skills might actually break that paradigm.

Nick

Maybe but keep in mind that the Codex had a significant conversion loss when actually taking out the mana. The Chalice could also have something similar.

Alex Anderson

Does this mean that this pattern can be used for power leveling Vivi? Saffra fights simple monsters —> gets tons of exp —> Vivi drinks and therefore gets tons of exp from the killing of “low level “ monsters.
