The writing on this show just gets better and better I love it and Mack will grow on ya more least I hope all the actors kill it for what their given.
Regarding Mack, it’s worth pointing out he was Chief Engineer on that high level SHIELD Aircraft Carrier back before the Hydra uprising. He’s run a big ass team before, he’s just still green when it comes to making tough combat/operations calls.

why i liked that mack wasn't making the calls immediately (even though he's always quick to judge coulson), it shows that he's realizing the job is NOT as easy as he thinks. he's never had to be the guy to make the call and now he's got to. thrown into the deep end!

I really like your analysis of Mack’s character, but unless I’m mistaken Mack’s didn’t call Coulson again after he consulted May. His conversation with May, specially her telling him that as the man in charge he should make the call, was the last of him asking someone’s opinion on what he should do.
