hey. Using primitives is a great idea. Many professional artists do the same. This makes the job easy and correct. I tossed this idea to a few of my 2d artist friends and some even learned the basics of 3d modeling for it. And that allows them to do amazing things. That primitive you built in the beginning and the end result is... amazing. Especially with the characters. They are filled with freedom, joy and self-confidence. I like how it feels. This horses, this manes, this toples filly... so great!

Even with fully posable 3D characters, there would be a lack of context and artistry which still would require concepts to be done. One of the folks I knew who worked in the games industry several years back would show off some of the carved 'maquettes' they used for everything from weird aliens to these solar ship gliders they were doing art and models of in game. It was pretty fascinating. I'd personally love to use a bit more 3D now and then to eliminate some of the tedious tasks, or even to do studies from different heads at different angles. A low poly-simple horse head could work to let me sketch out a compelling shot from above or below and get a sense of just how a muzzle would sit at that angle. I admit, I wouldn't mind having a fully rendered Cinders model too. I'd get it 3D printed, and she could watch me work while eating an apple :)

"I had to take December off just due to the sheer amount of stress the holiday brings..." Take all the time you need. Art is supposed to be fun. Right? 😉

Can't argue with that.

The world needs more topless mares.

Might as well just not bother with the bottoms either. For no reason, of course.

Nice results. And it has been w wild ride in 2021. Hopefully 2022 will be better for us all.

Well, the new utilities are not really automating the process, but it's certainly simplifying, removing a certain amount of the heavy lifting. Now, when you can keep your characters in a folder on the computer, take them out and rotate and pose them as you want... it will be time to give it up.

Very cool results :) Thanks for this write-up, very interesting read. Hope you have some holiday fun one way or another.
