Supper Mario Broth

Thank you, I will do that when I receive my copy of Super Mario RPG (which I have recently ordered) and play all the way through it! This may take some time but I would like to update this article eventually!

Seándwalsh

I would love to see an update to this considering new info and context given by the profiles and extra content in the remake!

Drew Mackie

Also they're both invading forces that turn out to be working for someone else. Also back in the day, it really seemed like Nintendo wanted Tatanga to be part of a recurring "race," because there is also the very similar looking Katsini character https://www.mariowiki.com/Katsini

Professor Hazard

The rejected puzzling grunt appears to be a fireworks monster, with the lower half of its design being a cannon, recognizable by its mounted legs, fuse, and what really stood out to me: the (presumably red) zig zag explosion design on the mouth of the cannon, seen in many other video games.

Thank you very much! I did not even consider that the similarity to Tatanga could be more than coincidental, but Super Mario Land has been relatively current at the time, and Booster could be a reference to Super Mario Land 2, so there is definitely a potential link there!

you were right in saying this document would be fascinating! mr kurashima's character designs have always been so wonderfully interesting to me... i hadn't actually seen this document before, thank you for taking some time to write about it! i wonder if it's a coincidence that the early mack design here looks so similar to tatanga from super mario land...

Thank you very much! That is definitely a likely possibility, though it is strange that if the design is supposed to be a placeholder, nothing next to Majin indicates that. While the name is generic, note that the names of the four main generals are also generic at this stage (e.g. instead of "Mack", it reads "Sword Boss"). It is possible that while the name was not intended to be anything but a placeholder, the design was, at least for a short time after making the chart - although of course, it is impossible to tell with the information provided.

Super Mario RPG is my favorite game of all time, so this analysis and the promise of more to come is very exciting! I suspect "Majin" was never actually intended to be the final boss's design - "Majin" literally translates to "evil god", and the design shown on the concept art has a strong placeholder vibe. I imagine they had come up with the concept of weapon bosses but not yet settled on the concept of a blacksmith as their leader, so Kurashima simply sketched a generic Dragon Quest-ish final boss design, which was later updated into a proper enemy (perhaps as a developer in-joke, or simply part of the same design repurposing as many other things in this concept art)

Thank you very much! That is a very interesting idea, having Valentina use a Cupid effect to have allies switch sides and fight against the party! I wonder if it was programmed, but then once Valentina's original design was changed, this mechanic was then given to Belome just to not let it go to waste - this would be supported by how out of place it is for him to create evil clones of characters by eating them, suggesting it was not originally planned to be part of his abilities.

Ariamaki

Given the name, concept, and theme of betrayal, if "Valentina was planned to use a bow as part of the manipulation", I would think this would have taken the form of a Cupid's bow and arrow with a "charm" effect, making allies act against the party. A very interesting post about a really interesting piece of history!
