We were stuffed into Michael’s station wagon, driving up to Oceanside.
It’s a small town on the west coast of Oregon. According to Michael’s cousin, it was a hidden gem. Amazing beaches, welcoming locals, and inexpensive hotels. We were all in our fourth year of university, looking for one last spring break.
Six more months and I’d be a coder in San Francisco, pulling down six figures a year. My friends were all in the sciences too, except for Jared who’s in math. Whatever happened, we were all headed towards fulfilling jobs and library-free nights.
“I don’t get the deal with this town,” I said, slouched in the passenger seat. Michael was driving, Chris and Jared were seated in the middle, and Dan was stuffed in the back with the suitcases.
“What’s not to get?” Michael asked. “Chaz says it’s the best. He went on vacation here and he loved it.”
“And why does your cousin have any credibility?” i asked. “Isn’t he a personal trainer or something?”
“So?” Michael said, sounding defensive. “Yeah, but he’s a really good one. He must be – he’s super buff. Besides, Chaz is the gay one in the family, and they don’t lie about a good party.”
“Is the town full of serial killers? I don’t see any other reason for a deal this good.”
“Relax Pete,” Jared said from behind us. “We’re on vacation. Maybe the last vacation we’ll ever have together.” Jared dropped his voice as deep as it went and looked at me with buggy eyes and a stuck out tongue. “I love you brah.”
“Oh fuck you,” I laughed, turning my eyes back to the map.
Eventually we found it, tucked too far off the interstate.
Chaz was right – it was picturesque. I also figured out why he’d loved his vacation – it seemed like most of the town was gay. Everywhere you looked there were men holding hands as they walked down the street. I don’t have a problem with that – you do you, but it’s not my thing.
Michael’s cousin must have loved it though. I have found the party people, and they live in Oceanside, Oregon.
Unfortunately, so do a couple thousand tourists. There are twelve motels and hotels in town, most of them right on the beach. Every single one of them had a ‘no vacancy’ sign.
“Shit, we should have made reservations,” Dan was complaining from the back. “It’s spring break, of course it’s all booked up.”
Michael just kept driving around with grim resolve.
“There’s got to be something,” he said. “Are you sure Maps doesn’t have anything else?”
“Sorry,” I shrugged. “We’ve driven past everything.”
“Hang on,” he said, pulling up to a park. There was a guy there shooting hoops, shirtless and sweating under the afternoon sunlight. He had pecs and abs that I’d never achieve, even if I went to the gym.
“Hey,” Michael called, stepping out of the car and walking toward the court.
“Oh, hey bro,” the tan jock said, catching the ball and spinning it on his finger. “Wanna play?”
“No, thanks,” Michael said. “We were wondering if there are any cheap spots to stay near here. All the motels on the beach are full up.”
“Have you tried The Second Chance?” he asked, glancing at us with a hungry look. “It’s not on any of the tourist maps, so it’s always got room. Plus it’s the best deal in town.”
“Where is it?” Michael said, a fleeting smile across his face.

When we pulled up in front of The Second Chance Hotel, we almost turned around and drove away. The place was in the middle of nowhere, at least five minutes from the rest of town and only accessible through a maze of side streets and laneways. It also looked like a haunted mansion.
No – scratch that – it was a haunted mansion. The whole place was an old manor house that must have been sliced up into rooms. As for haunted, the trees all bent like they were trying to stay away. I’m not superstitious, but this place could make me believe.
“I have a bad feeling about this place,” Chris said. “I know I’m a scientist, but this place spooks me right out.”
“Oh, come on,” Michael prodded. “We should at least check what it costs.”
“There has to be another option,” Jared complained. “We’ll drive to the next town.”
“Just a sec, I’m googling it,” Chris said. He spent a long thirty seconds tapping around on his phone before biting his lip. “Well... I guess we’re staying here guys,” he said. “Every place within a hundred miles is like three hundred bucks a night.”
“Let’s go inside and take a look,” I suggested. “There’s no reason to judge a book by it’s cover.”
There was some grumbling, but eventually we all got inside.
The place was shockingly posh inside, all wood panelling and stone countertops. No way this was in our price range. I rang the bell at the check-in desk and strummed my fingers while we waited.
“Hello,” said a young man, striding out from the back. Like everyone else in this town, he was well built and seemed friendly.
“We were wondering if you have any rooms?” I asked, self-conscious of how posh the place was. Maybe we’d be better off driving to the next town. Or all the way back to the university.
“Absolutely sir,” he said, flashing me a relaxed grin. “Are you guys up here for spring break?”
“Yeah,” I said. “So... y’know, whatever’s cheapest?”
“I’ve got you,” the clerk said. "I can give you two of our rooms for $50 a night each – that’s our special student discount.”
I glanced at the others. That was about half of what we budgeted for. Everyone was giving me a big ‘thumbs up’.
“We’ll take it,” I said. “Five nights, we’re here until Saturday.”
“Yes sir,” the clerk said, typing away at his computer. “Give me one moment, and then I’ll give you the tour and show you up to your rooms.”
“Sure thing.”
The clerk led us around the hotel. The restaurant and bar shared a patio that overlooked an incredible stretch of beach. The restaurant was quiet, just a couple of businessmen having a cup of coffee and chatting quietly. The bar was a little more lively – three or four tables, all guys that looked like they were on vacation.
“Hey boys!” the bartender called, giving us a head nod as we walked in. The guy was on the wrong coast – between the heavy gold jewelry, the deep tan, and the criminal amount of hair gel, he looked like he belonged in New Jersey. Total guido.
“DJ, these guys will be staying the week,” the clerk said, giving the bartender a wink. “Give ‘em the drink specials.”
“For sure,” he said in a thick Jersey accent. “We got beers for a buck each. Two bucks for a cocktail. Two bucks for shots. If you wanna fuck the bartender, that costs a twenty,” he joked with an obnoxious laugh.
“That’s unreal,” Chris said. “What’s the catch?”
“No catch. The owner is eccentric, and the locals keep us busy” DJ shrugged. “You guys want shots now? I make ‘em special for each guy, and the first one’s free.”
“Uh... maybe after we unpack,” Dan said. “Thanks.”
“For sure, come down anytime,” DJ said, turning away to check in with his other customers.
“Dude, did you just turn down free booze?” Michael asked, rolling his eyes at Dan.
“No, I said later. It’s like 3 PM. We don’t need to start drinking this early.”
“Spoilsport,” I said, sticking out my bottom lip. “It’s spring break. This isn’t early.”
The clerk led us up to our rooms. They were right next to each other and shared a wall. I hoped I wouldn’t hear Dan snoring all week – the guy went through six roommates in Freshman year.
I took the larger room, along with Chris and Jared. Michael drew the short straw and had to share with Dan. At least each of the rooms was large – ours had three queen sized beds and plenty of open space.
“Anything else you guys might need?” the clerk asked, handing over our keys.
“I think we’re good man,” Jared said. “Thanks.”
I slid him a ten – with the student rate and the cheap drinks, I was feeling rich.
I unpacked slowly. Like most 22 year old guys, I get horny a lot, and I hadn’t jerked off before we left the school. I waited for Chris and Jared to head down to the bar, then locked the door and pulled out my dick. Two minutes later, I was washing my hands and ready to relax.
Everyone else beat me downstairs. They were clustered around a table, chatting with DJ.

“Well, spring break is a bad time for smahrts,” he grinned. “How about we get the party started, huh? I’ll bring you those shots.”
“Sure man,” I said. “Thanks.”
He was back in thirty seconds carrying five shots. He handed them out, giving us each a careful look and picking one of the shots for us. I got an orange liquid with little gold flecks.
“Thanks man,” I said.
“Down ‘em,” he encouraged.
We all made eye contact – even Dan shrugged and picked his up. Mine went down light and sweet, like it was more sugar than booze.
“Alright boys,” DJ said with a grin. “Welcome to The Second Chance. Time for some beers, huh?”
He collected our shot glasses and returned to drop off the first five pints of the night.
We might be the smartest guys in school, but we're also just college guys. As the booze started flowing, so did the shit-talking and the bragging.
By the third beer, we were comparing our expected salaries after graduation – me and Dan figured we’d be at the top as software guys, then probably Michael and Chris making pretty good money working at some of the big pharmaceutical places. Jared’s was dead last as a math major, but he was thinking about heading to Wall Street, so who knows?
By beer number six or seven, we were calling out asshole profs and talking shit about girls we dated. Dan stayed pretty quiet for that – so far as I know, he’s never successfully asked a girl out. The rest of us get the occasional date, but Jared was the only one of us who’d had a girlfriend in college – she broke up with him when he kept getting high and talking about fractals.
As the evening went on the bar kept filling up, but we were so blurry we didn’t really notice. I remember stumbling to take a piss and realizing that like 90% of the bar was gay guys, and the whole place had an incredibly bro-ish vibe. I haven’t seen that many backwards hats and tank tops since I tried to rush a frat in my freshman year.

Sometime around 2 AM, DJ came by our table and told us it was time to pack it in for the night.
“What do we owe you?” Chris burped, fumbling with his wallet.
“Twelve bucks each,” he said. Then he pointed at me – “And sixteen for the heavy drinkah over here.”
We all pulled out cash and paid up. I was pretty shitfaced, so I just handed DJ my wallet and let him take whatever. Dude seemed pretty cool, even if he did give off douche vibes.
“G’night DJ,” I said, throwing my arm around him and squeezing.
“Night brah,” he laughed, giving my ass a playful swat.
“Dude,” I said, the world spinning when I tried to stand. “I’m nooooot gay.”
“I figured,” DJ said with a shrug. “But thought I oughta check.”
It took like half an hour to find our rooms.

The next morning my eyes felt like sandpaper. I struggled to open them, finding myself passed out on top of a bed, my shirt thrown to the side but my shoes still on.
“Mmmm...” I moaned in agony. "I haven’t drank that much in... fuck.”
I stood up. The room wasn’t spinning, but my stomach was nauseous and I craved fried food. Jared was already up and showered, reading his book and drinking from a mug. Chris was passed out in his bed – at least he’d managed to kick off his shoes and get under the covers.
“Hey man,” Jared said quietly. “I made coffee, and there’s water cups in the bathroom.”
I realized I could hear the shower running loudly in Michael and Dan’s room. That must have been what woke me. It was old plumbing and very loud – I was surprised Chris was still sleeping.
But whatever. That left our shower free. I went to the bathroom and drank three glasses of water, then climbed into the shower and let hot water flow over me. I’m not really one for long showers, so I hopped out after a few minutes, wrapped a towel around my bony hips, and went for the coffee.
I’d swallowed the first sip when a scream came through the wall.
Jared and I glanced at each other, then ran for our door. That was Michael’s voice, and he wasn’t exactly a loud guy. Jared pounded on his door, while I fumbled with my towel.
Someone unexpected answered the door.
“Oh, heeeeeey!” the mysterious little man said, waving us inside with a limp wrist. He was almost naked, only wearing a lime green thong. The guy was a contradiction – he had flowing blond hair that reached his shoulders, and a body so expertly waxed that he was totally smooth elsewhere.
“Uh...hi. Who are you?” Jared asked, even as the guy turned and walked away from us.
“It’s Dan!” Michael said, dressed only in a towel. “It’s Dan but... it's not Dan.”
There was no way it was Dan. Dan was short and chubby, this guy was at least 5’8” and his body was slim with a little bit of muscle. From our angle, we could see a bubble butt swallowing up the thong. Dan had a buzzcut, this guy's hair was at least ten inches long.

“What happened?” I asked, wishing I’d had more coffee.
“I got out of the shower and...” Michael stopped and blinked. “And... Danny was chilling in bed, dressed like that!”
“Wait... it’s the outfit that’s throwing you?” Jared laughed.
“IT’S THE WHOLE THING,” Michael snapped.
“Bro, it’s not a big deal,” Danny said, shrugging and reaching into his luggage. He pulled out a tiny pair of terrycloth shorts and slid them up his legs. They barely covered his oversized ass and hugged his thighs tightly. “Look, okay? I put on pants.”
Chris stumbled into the room, looking worse for the wear.
“What’s going on?” he asked sleepily.
“Michael’s making a big deal out of nothing,” Danny said, pouting his lower lip. “I just decided to dress a little different today. I mean... we’re on vacation!”
“Who are you?” Chris asked, trying to understand.
“This is ‘Danny’,” Michael said, making air quotes. “Dan went through the looking glass and now he’s a.... I don’t even know!”
“I’m a hot surfer twink,” Danny said confidently, laying a hand on Michael’s bare chest. “And honey, if you wanna talk about fucking, maybe we should close the door.”
“Look at that ass...” Chris said, staring at Danny’s tight globes.
“Really Chris?” I said. “That’s what you’re taking out of this?”
“Why don’t we all go downstairs?” Danny suggested. “Get some brunch? I’m like... totally starving after last night. I should be totes hungover right now but... this is great!”
He ran his hand over his eight pack abs and gave us all an expectant look.
What were we going to do? Call the cops? Take him to the hospital? They’d search us for drugs, then laugh us out of town.
“Come’on guys,” Danny begged. “Brunch is like... my spirit animal.”
So we went for breakfast.
We were all nervous about Danny’s transformation. People don’t just turn into some swishy version of themselves overnight, do they? Had someone roofied him? Or maybe there was something in the water?
Despite our worry, we became mired in a sense of inevitability. After the initial shock wore off, I find myself accepting the idea of Danny far too readily.
We spent the day at the bar, downing beers like there was no tomorrow. It felt hopeless. We were all scientists, and there was nothing in the natural world that could explain Danny. We lived in dread, wondering if it would happen to us.
Except for Danny. Danny was up in the room, getting laid by some guy he had wolf whistled on the beach. Classic Danny.
I still remembered Dan, but I was starting to remember Danny.
Danny who was always watching Drag Race.

“Is there something you need to tell us Chris?” Jared asked with a condescending drip to his voice. “Because I don’t think I can handle this today.”
“Relax,” Chris said, finishing his beer.
When it came time to stumble upstairs, Michael practically begged Chris to swap beds with him. Chris gave in easily, taking a critical look at Danny’s ass. Sure, Danny was a fag, but Chris was shitfaced. We all tried to ignore it.
“Sure, whatever,” Chris said, swapping keys with Michael.
“Mmm, c’mon girl, let’s get you to bed,” Danny laughed, hanging off Chris’ skinny frame.

“I wish,” I said, rolling my eyes. “Then you just... don’t let them bite you. But Dan was alone in the room – who do you think got him?”
“Yeah... fair,” Jared said. “Okay, I’m gonna grab a shower before I hit the hay.”
“Whatever Jer,” Michael said. “Pete, did you see the way he walks?”
“Yeah... it’s like he’s prancing or something.”
“How can one guy be that big of a flamer?” Michael said, sitting on the side of his bed. “I mean... I’m not a homophobe or anything man, I just...”
“It's been a weird day,” I said.
There was a crash from the bathroom. Michael and I looked at each other in panic. I could feel my stomach sink. Instantly I knew – it had happened again.
“Hey Jer, you okay in there?” Michael called hopefully.
“Shit...” I said.
“Maybe he just hit his head?”
That’s when Jared came out of the bathroom. The new Jared.
He was like a foot shorter – Danny would look tall next to him. What he lacked in height, he’d more than gained in muscle. Jared was built like a brick shithouse, big rounded pecs overhanging a prominent six pack.

“Well... I was in the shower and then... suddenly now I’m Jett! It just happened!” he said, giving us an innocent shrug and dropping his towel on the floor. “Why, do you wanna join me?” he asked with a little shake of his plump ass. “No ‘Jett’, we do not want to join you,” Michael said, pulling on a pair of jeans.

I had a hard time getting to sleep. Between the fear and the sound of Danny’s bed frame pounding against the wall, it took me an hour to pass out.

“I’m gonna go wake up the fuckboy twins,” Michael sighed, using the nickname we jokingly called them at school. My memories were clashing – Jett and Danny, bringing dudes back to the residence at all hours, or Jared and Dan, pulling all nighters in the library.
I slipped into the shower, hoping that Jett had used up any potential magic. I let the hot water wash over me, trying to figure out what happened to my friends. Danny had been in the room, Jett had been in the shower. Danny had changed the morning after we arrived, Jett hadn’t transformed until the evening. Nothing seemed to line up.
I wrapped a towel around my waist and stepped back into the room.
“Seriously?” I groaned.

“Ha... yeah, my friends call me Tucker,” said the hunked out version of Chris. “You should know that! You’re my bros!”
Tucker laughed with the loudest and most vacuous laugh I’ve heard in my life.
“Mmm... Mister All-American Boytoy,” Jett said, rubbing his hands over Tucker’s pecs.
“I’m gonna fuck you so hard brah,” Tucker said, reaching down and squeezing Jett’s melons.
“Don’t forget about me!” Danny said, reaching to fondle Tucker’s cock.
“Okay, that’s enough!” Michael interrupted. “You two are such fucking sluts.”
“Mmmm – jealous?” Danny asked, raising an eyebrow.
“Guys, let’s just go get some breakfast,” I suggested.

“What?” Michael snapped. “We’ve ordered.”

“Would it really be so bad?” I asked. “They seem happy.”
“You can’t think like that,” Michael said, shaking his head. “We can get through this.”
“Maybe we should leave?”
“And abandon our friends?” Michael shook his head again. “Besides, I tried this morning. The road leads right back here. There’s something magic about this place Pete, and I don’t think we can leave until checkout time.”
“If we can leave at all...” I said softly.
“Yeah.”
We drank our beers for a while, watching DJ watch us.
“I’ve been trying to find the pattern,” I finally said. “I double majored in comp-sci and physics, but I can’t find the pattern.”
“It’s getting more extreme,” Michael suggested.
“Yeah?”

The months flew by and soon the summer was coming to an end. I was under a car at the garage when two preppy looking guys walked in.
“God, look at this place,” one of them complained. “What a shithole.”
I rolled out from under the car.
“Hey boys,” I said, wiping my hands on my t-shirt. I wear a classic look at work, coveralls tied at the waist, and a tight white crewneck to cover my bulky pecs. “Wha’ can I help yew with?”
“Hey,” said the one wearing a suit jacket. “We blew a tire on our car, had to limp here from the interstate. Can you take a look?”
“Yeah, no worries,” I said. “Lead on.”
Their car was outside. It’s a BMW, not a problem. I carry spare tires in the back.
But... these two were assholes. I glanced at their hands – smooth and soft.
“Sorry guys, I’ll havta get a tire from the warehouse,” I lied. “But I can have yew on the road tomorrah mornin’.”
“Aw fuck,” the suit said. “Can you have it early? We’ve got a meeting in Seattle at noon.”
“Yeah, I can promise it by... six AM?” I offered.
That should be more than enough time for these guys to learn some blue collar skills.
“Yeah, okay,” the other one said. “Is there a hotel here that’s not a total shithole?”
“Yeah,” I grinned. “Yew shoul’ stay at ‘The Secon’ Chance’ – it’s this beautiful old mansion. Just up the road.”
“Fine, whatever,” the suit said, tossing me his car keys. “Get it fixed.”
“C’mon boys,” I said, walking them around to my Camero. “Lemme give yew a ride.”

Thanks! I think you were the one who commented on GSS that you’d love to see a rewrite, so I’m glad the reboot worked for you! It’s a different ending, but I think it’s a much stronger story now. I really enjoyed revisiting it — especially the new scene where Michael and Pete talk through the problem. That one tickles me.
