The Magic Store: Through the Lens

I take pride in the work I do, and I'm damn good at it. When I'm on a job, I work hard and sweat harder. There's something about creating a beautiful landscape from scratch that gets my blood pumping.

I work with a crew of guys who get it. Craig, Dixon, and Sam. We’ve been working together for a few years, and we’re all friends by now. We're always joking around, telling stories, and teasing each other about everything under the sun. The hours go by fast.
We’d just started working on this new property – a big house in the burbs. We were ripping up the yard and starting over. A couple of guys owned the place, and I guess they were loaded.
The four of us had broken for lunch when we started giving Sam shit about his nephew.
“He’s a YouTuber,” Sam admitted. “And I guess he’s pretty good at it. He’s got a couple hundred people watching his stuff.”
“Dude, what the fuck,” I laughed. “You want the kid to end up gay?”
“He’s not gonna end up gay,” Sam snapped. “Besides, do you know whose house we’re working on?”
He pulled up a video on his phone and showed us – it was a pair of guys talking about some trip they were taking. They were both wearing speedos on a beach somewhere, talking about how great their trip was.
“These guys are making bank,” Sam said. “They do stuff about fashion and fitness and travel... and millions of people follow them!”
“Yeah, whatever,” I laughed. “They’re still gay!”

The guys who own the house wanted a big garden full of rock walls and water features. The part that sucked is they didn’t have enough room to actually fit any equipment back there, so we were stuck hauling materials by hand. I was aching by the end of the day.
But y’know... I still had a little energy left. I revved up my truck and drove into town. My girl, Lisa, she had her eye on some lingerie at the local sex shop and I decided it was time to get lucky. The city is ridiculous – they’ve been installing bike lanes and shit, so there’s nowhere to park anymore. I had to hike the last half dozen blocks.

There was a new store across the street. It looked old but... it hadn’t been there last week, had it? It had an ancient looking sign that said “The Magic Shop”. I’m not a curious guy, but something pulled me to check it out. I waited for a couple cars to pass, then cut across the street towards the dusty storefront.
There was an old man sitting at the front desk of the store. He gave me a friendly look, like he’d been waiting for me to come inside.
“Uh, hey...” I said. “Is this place new?”
"I saw you across the street," the man said.
"Yeah, I was hoping to find something sexy for my girl," I chuckled. “Guess we’ll just have to fuck like normal tonight.”
"Why don't you look around here?" the old man suggested. "Magic can be surprisingly erotic.”

"Why don't you look around?” he urged me. "I'm sure we have something that will change your perspective.”
“Yeah... okay,” I said. I’ve never been good at saying no to old people. My grandma and grandpa raised me – it’s just about showing respect, you know? I smiled at him and turned down the nearest aisle. Five minutes, just to be polite.
The store wasn’t like anything I’d ever seen. None of the items were in packages and there was only one of each thing. It felt more like a thrift store than a magic shop. Little handwritten tags laid next to each thing, promising a less-than-magical usage.
Like there was ball cap – the same kind of cap every kid in America wears – and the tag said it would help you make friends. Right beside it was a blank diary. It’s tag said it could store all your thoughts... hardly the stuff of magic.
I was just about to turn back and leave the store when I saw a beat up looking camera on the shelf. This cheap plastic thing that looked at least ten years out of date. It was garbage – like every picture would be sepia toned – but it was also rattling as I approached.
“This camera will capture you and your friends,” the tag read. Yeah dude... that’s what a camera does. It was so old, but you know old people and technology... I wondered if the stores owner even knew the thing was worthless.
But still... it was vibrating harder. Begging for my attention. I picked it off the shelf and –
– I was suddenly standing in the house from the job site, talking to the two guys who owned it. I recognized them from that YouTube video, but they weren’t wearing speedos and tans now. One of them was looking shocked, while the other one was staring at me with awe.
“Wait a second...” he said, staring down at my hands. I could feel the cheap plastic gripped between my fingers. “I recognize that. It’s a MetaMorph 3000, right? They only made like... a hundred of them before the company got shut down!”
“Yeah?” I rumbled. “I found it at a thrift shop.”
My voice sounded weird and something was off, but I couldn’t really focus on anything but the guy. He was pretty cute, in like... an annoyingly conventional way. His husband was too. A couple of carbon copy gays.
“I’m kind of an old camera buff,” the YouTuber said, looking like he was about to scream with joy. “Could I buy it off you?”
“I dunno,” I heard myself say. “How much?"
Some rich people just throw money at anything. I figured I could squeeze him for a quick hundred bucks or so.
“Say... fifty thousand?” the YouTuber said without blinking.
I dropped the camera back on the shelf. I was in the store again, my heart beating like a drum. I backed away in fear.
What the hell just happened? I’ve tried a lot of drugs and nothing feels like that. It felt like I was really there... what a hallucination!
I looked at the plastic box carefully. There wasn’t any powder on it or anything. Whatever was causing that rush... I gingerly picked it up again.
Nothing. No vision of the future. No fucked up body sensation. I was just a guy holding a piece of garbage.
I turned it over in my hands. The label on the front made my eyes bulge out a little – MetaMorph 3000. How did I know that? Had I read it on the tag or seen the label without noticing it? Or did I actually see the future?
Cause if I actually saw the future... then this piece of crap was worth a lot of money. Like... life changing money to a guy like me.
It couldn’t possibly be worth fifty grand.
But if someone was willing to fork over the cash... hey, who am I to make choices for other people? Besides, I’d seen their house... they definitely had the money.
I carried the camera up to the counter.
“Ah, yes...” the old man said with a slight smirk. “Did you find what you need most?”
“Uh... yeah, dude...” I stammered. “There’s no price tags or anything. How much does this thing cost?”
“In terms of money?” he asked weirdly. “Twenty bucks. It’s a bargain.”
I mulled it over for an entire half second before I slapped a twenty on the counter. Imagine it was actually gonna be a huge payout... that was worth taking the bet, right? No different from playing the slots, right?
“Enjoy your purchase,” the old man said, taking my money. “What you do with it is up to you.”
Yeah buddy. That’s how stores work.

I got home and the first thing I saw was Lisa sitting on the couch. She gave me an angelic look when I kissed her on the forehead – something was up.
“Hey baby, is supper ready?" I asked.
"No, I'm too tired to cook,” she said with a shake of her head. “Why don't we just order pizza?”
I sighed. You load sixteen tons, what do you get?
"Alright, I guess that works.” I glanced at the TV and saw she was watching The Bachelor. I fuckin’ hate that show. Bunch of pretty boy narcissists acting like they matter. I could feel my blood boil.
"Why are you watching this fake bullshit?" I ranted. "It's all pointless drama. Why do you have to watch this crap?”
She rolled her eyes.
"Can't you just let me enjoy my guilty pleasure for once?”
“No,” I said, shaking my head. “You sit on your ass all day and watch this garbage? And then I gotta pay for pizza?”
That lit her fuse. We were fighting now. She never contributed to the household. I was always taking her for granted. She acted like I was made of money. I never appreciated the things she does. On and on... you know the fight.
The only way to end a fight with Lisa is to give her something. I’d been banking on the lingerie, but all I had was the camera. Oh well, you work with what you’ve got. I grabbed it from my bag.
"Here," I say, handing it to her. "I got a good deal on this. Figured maybe you'd like it.”
I was sure she won't be interested. She’d probably obsess over it for like a day, and then it’d end up in the junk drawer with everything else. She wouldn’t even notice when I sold it to the gay dudes.
“Really baby?” she said sweetly. And just like that, I was out of trouble. She pointed the camera at me and pressed the shutter.
"I mean, it's probably not as good as the one on your phone," I said. She was already frowning.
"I think it's broken," she said. "The screen's all black...”
And then I felt something happening to me. It was like my whole body was on fire. I screamed in agony, and Lisa dropped the camera and rushed over to me.
"What's wrong baby?" she asked with panic.
My body felt like it was expanding. Growing to impossible proportions. My jeans were pinching tight. Buttons were popping off my shirt. And then, finally, the fire calmed down and the camera beeped a single tone. It reminded me of my old gameboy.
I rushed to the bathroom and stared in the mirror.
I couldn't believe what I was seeing. My body had grown to impossible proportions. I was muscular, manly, and strong as fuck! I couldn't stop staring at myself, flexing my biceps and admiring my muscle gut. I was no longer the average guy I used to be. I felt like a burly superhero – invincible and powerful.

“What did you do?" I asked, still staring at my reflection.
"Me?" she shrieked. "You brought home the camera!”
I was confused and dazed, trying to figure out what had happened to me. My muscles were bulging, my chest and arms were twice their original size, and I could feel raw power coursing through me.
"What the hell happened to me?" I asked, still trying to come to terms with my new body.
"I don't know," Lisa replied, looking at me with a mix of fear and excitement in her eyes. "But you look amazing!"
I had to agree with her. I had never felt so alive and powerful in my life. I flexed my biceps again, and Lisa ran her hand over my beefy, feeling the new contours of my muscles.
"This is insane," she said. “We have to show this to someone."
“No way baby,” I said possessively. “Whatever this thing is... we gotta keep it a secret. At least til we figure out what’s going on.”

As I headed out the door, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of dread. How was I gonna explain this to the guys at work? Did I even want to? It was impossible to hide a physique that massive.
I’d have to come clean. I’d have to tell them about the camera.
So yeah... I took it with me.
I squeezed into my truck. Even with the seat all the way back, I barely fit inside. I started to realize life that there were consequences to think about – I’d have to buy a bigger truck, new clothes, maybe even a second seat on airlines.

"No way," Craig said, his eyes widening. “That’s impossible!”
"You brought it with you?" Dixon asked.
"Yeah," I said. "Figured you wouldn't believe me unless...”
"Dude, zap me," Dixon interrupted. He had a crazy look in his eye.
"Are you sure?" I asked. "It kinda hurts, and...”
"Zap me," Dixon insisted. “I wanna be a fuckin’ beast!”
"Okay," I said. "Go stand over there, away from Craig and Sam.” I gestured for him to stand next to a trench we’d been digging.
“Wait a sec,” Craig said. “Do me too!”
"Huh?" I asked.
"You heard me," Craig said. "No way I’m gonna be the little guy.”
I chuckled. Shoulda known... men wanna be big. Of course these guys wanted in on it. Hell, maybe that’s why I brought the camera along in the first place.
"What about you, Sam?" Dixon asked.
“Uh... you two go ahead," Sam told the guys. "Who knows what kind of side effects that thing has.”
"Maybe he's got a point," I conceded.
"Dude, just zap us," Dixon insisted.
I aimed the camera carefully and snapped a picture of Dixon and Craig. There was a soft click before the two men doubled over in pain. My eyes went wide – it’s one thing to experience it, but it’s different when you watch a couple of guys hulk out!
Dixon's arms and chest bulged with muscles while his shoulders widened. His biceps strained against his t-shirt, stretching it until his arms were pinched and red from the fabric. Dixon peeled down his broken jeans and struggled to get out of them. His boxers were skintight now, but he didn’t seem bothered by it.. He reached up to the collar of his t-shirt and it gave way easily, fluttering down in shredded pieces.
Meanwhile Craig headed for his truck. He kept a gym bag in the back – don’t ask me where he found the energy for the gym – and he dug inside of it for a pair of sweats. He fought with his jeans until he finally just ripped them off too, trading the inadequate fabric for stretchy sweat pants. I guess he had a tanktop in the bag too, even if it barely stretched to cover his new frame.
I couldn’t help feel a sense of pride. I had a magic camera and it was making my buddies into beasts! Nobody else could do that!
But as I looked at the transformed Craig and Dixon, I couldn't help but feel a sense of unease. What if this wasn't just a one-time thing? What if there were side effects? What if...?
I shook my head, trying to push those thoughts away. This was just a harmless toy, something to have fun with. I grinned, feeling a rush of excitement.

He picked up a heavy piece of basalt and walked towards the yard.

After a couple of hours of work, Sam finally spoke up.

“I’m not even tired bro,” Dixon chuckled.

Sam glanced at the three of us – supermen compared to his mortal status. There were at least sixty tons of rock still piled beside the driveway, all of it waiting to be moved one piece at a time. Something in his soul snapped.

He stopped and stared into the distance for a second, like a dog who just heard a sound. Then he was in motion, moving faster than I could watch him.
