This month's videos are going to feature a LOT of callbacks it seems (I didn't plan it, but I guess when you've been doing this for nearly 12 years a lot of topics tend to overlap), this one references a video from 5 years ago where I predicted that the decision in the Pharrell/Robin Thicke vs Marvin Gaye's Estate case would have weird repercussions for pop music moving forward. And surprise, surprise... Buckstradamus strikes again, as Olivia Rodrigo has to give song writing credits and royalties to artists because she was inspired by them. As new generations of pop stars enter an industry where it feels like almost everything has been done before, is there any room left for innovation? And what happens when there isn't, and new artists start sounding like the older artists who inspired them? Olivia Rodrigo is finding out the hard way as she's forced to give up royalties for songs that sorta kinda sound like something made before. How far is too far when it comes to copyright, and does homage also have to come with a lifetime royalty payment?

You'd think, but the problem is that they only think about themselves. Instead of thinking long-term about how this could come back to bite them in the ass, they go "yeah but we want OUR money right now!", so then when the inevitable Paramore reunion happens and they make a song that sounds like something Lacuna Coil or Metric or some other lady-fronted rock band did a decade ago, they'll just have to give it back.

Really it comes down to whom has the most money, better lawyers, or sympathy. The whole music scene is basically eating itself alive, and where I'd normally watch with glee, it's going to stifle creativity, which means were' gonna be stuck with the same ole recycled garbage we've been listening to for years.

Nice steamed hams reference π€£π€£π€£ good to see youβre getting your meme on. As a musician, this shit is very concerning. Appropriation is a very important element of all arts, and done properly is very much legal and acceptable. Itβs important to be able to take inspiration from another style, element, sound, whatever, and be able to add to it to create something new and unique. The current direction of music is frightening. No one will be able to create anything anymore at this rate without someone chasing the dollar and suing you to oblivion.
