Happy Valentine's Day everyone, but really, more importantly, happy Bonus Dose Day! Hey, remember in elementary school in the 80s when, in order to make sure no one was left out, they had all the kids make enough valentine's cards for everyone in the class? What do you think the boomers would have been like on Twitter back then? That'd be a fun idea for a video... "Twitter in the 80s".
Anyway, that has nothing to do with this video, typing "Happy Valentine's Day" just reminded me of that, thought I'd share it with you.
No, this week I thought "you know, my Aussie audience has had to hear my awful down under accent a few times recently, why not give the Brits a turn?" plus we get a bonus southern US one here too! Enjoy this video about awards shows trying to treat men and women as equals and having it backfire.
It's Awards Season, and a lesser known show (at least here in North America), the Brit Awards, recently changed their rules to remove the "Male" and "Female" Artist of the Year awards, and combine them as one "Artist of the Year" award. So what happened this year? Every nominee was a dude. While Twitter panics, Buckley digs a little deeper to see if this really is a huge problem, or if people are worried about nothing (this is the Internet, so... guess which one it is?)

This was a great analysis of the situation. I'm willing to bet a lot of the people complaining were TERFs or conservatives, reflexively rejecting the notion of a gender-neutral space. This sort of backlash just doesn't make any sense. Women are not at all underrepresented in popular music and nobody participating has some sort of inherent genetic disadvantage, like one could apply in an argument on gender segregation in sports. I expect women might get nominated less after five years, simply because they are broadly underrepresented in the charts, but this has little to do with an inherent disadvantage and a lot more to do with the factors that lead to fewer women succeeding in the industry overall.

I’m on the fence with this one. I really do believe that people should be able to identify as they please and that it doesn’t really affect anyone… but at the same time, I wish we could make the transition process to including all people in an equitable way without all the screaming, carry-on, brigading and general over-the-top bullshit

I haven't seen anything that would suggest a third category or anything if that's what you mean, like doing Male, Female, AND Non-Binary? But yeah I feel like that wouldn't make much sense (there generally won't be very many people in that third category, statistically speaking). Instead, I guess they could just expand the "Best Artist" to 10 nominees instead of 5, and then hopefully that would allow for more representation (but if they're just going to do 5 males and 5 females it doesn't really change much anyway). Yes, I think that one category, that doesn't care what you were born as or how you dress, is far more "rebellious" or whatever than simply just being like "ok, you're this, that, or the other thing and those are the things you can be". But I guess ultimately I stand by my final thought in this video, which is... who cares, it's all just a fame circlejerk anyway. None of it matters.

It's so disappointing, but not surprising to see the Brit Awards instantly bow down to the pressure of ignorant and emotional twitter goons rather than show last years clear examples of why a gender neutral award doesn't negatively effect women. It's also unnerving to see the Brit Awards entertain the thought of a non-binary category. Why try and separate gender from biology, when you could instead approach rebelling against traditional/stereotypical western gender roles by just being a non traditional man or woman? If you need to introduce a whole new gender category, you are essentially conceding to the viewpoints you claim to disagree with; that by labelling yourself as a man or a woman, you must follow a particular set of rules or expectations that you don't want to follow. We could just say fuck the rules! Would love to hear your thoughts on that topic if you're willing to share, Buckley.

That nonsense again! Human potential have nothing to do with gender. All humans have the potential to be able to do what someone else can do and the factors for that are not even related to it. They clearly did that to get some attention because there is way to many award ceremony now, like multiple, every weekends when the season start....🙄 I'm in the category who don't care about these ceremonies (I don't even care about when we have these at work), nothing beats a genuine live positive feedback, now that's a real reward!

Gendered categories for anything other than physical sports never made sense to me. Do we think so little of women that we assume they need to be coddled or they'll never beat a man at making music, or acting, or chess?
