I think the “nicer” interpretation stems from the whole “separating kids from their families at the border if they’re illegal immigrants” saga that happened.

I'm confused by one bit. The miners/minors line. You say you think it might have a different, worse, meaning. "they should stop worrying about who's fucking which kid and help people out who are working their ass off here". I don't see how you'd take that line any *other* way. What's the initial meaning you're saying it might be instead of this?
