But they cannot last and destruction inevitable. Torches are signs of illumination, perseverance, guidance, courage. English turns of phrase. When a person “carries a torch” for another, it means they still love or admire the other person, even though they’re not in that person’s life at the time. The “meteor” bit is comparing the meteor’s bright light to the significantly smaller light from the torch.
