This album and most of Depeche Mode’s albums were on constant rotation in my car and room during college. One of THE pioneers of synth pop genre. Great album, the lead vocalist is Dave Gahan with Martin Gore the higher voice and the writer of most of the songs and the synth wizard does a masterful job with the layering of the sounds and the vocals are underrated. Despite the dark subject matter, is so fun to sing and dance to. Especially “It Doesn’t Matter two” I just love the harmonies in that one at the climax! If you like this album, their magnum opus album, Violator released in 1990 is very similar in structure and mood, with even better songs. You can’t go wrong with anything in their catalog! Saw them in 90 in Chicago at an amphitheater during the Violator tour with Nitzer Ebb opening and it was amazing! Thank you for this reaction!

Interesting choice for a newbie. Music for the masses would be my choice.This is a great album.

Great album and reminds of senior year in high school. Listening to this record late at night (along with New Order Low Life) allowed me to settle into dark feelings without being afraid. I saw this tour, 1986 Tower Theater in Philadelphia. They are surprisingly good and energetic. Also, I think this is the first Depeche Mode record where Martin Gore is featured on lead vocals for some of the songs. Most of the tracks are sung by Dave Gahan. I think Alex alluded to a Pink Floyd influence - I never thought about that, but it rings true for me. Floyd, mixed with Kraftwerk, and some post Vince Clarke soundscapes made for an important formative album for me.
