I really like the last part where Mrs. Moore now has the will to change for the better. I do hope their family would be happier in the future.

Judah Frankel

The irony is that Alan doesn’t realize the hypocrisy of his own thoughts. Which is normal and happens to pretty much everyone all the time, but it still sucks. He accuses them of being quick to reject any possibility that Lisa is innocent, while being equally quick to reject any possibility that she’s guilty.

Paul Wirtz

I wonder even if Lisa admitted to using to her brother if he would believe it

George Warner

I’m more apt to think that he’s just in a state of denial. He doesn’t want it to be true (that might require that he do something); therefore it isn’t. Much like people dismissing real things as “fake news” (Or like the CNN reporter that described the Portland BLM protests as “mostly peaceful”… all while three houses are burning in the background.)

LETS FUCKING GO SHANNON!

I dont really see where the nihilism comes from, rather he has a model of how the world works. It's a simplistic model because that is how he is, the world is pretty black and white for him. To accept that he's wrong he would have to admit to himself that he's not just wrong about Lisa and Danny but that his ability to understand the world is fundamentally flawed. That kind of thing shatters most people. Also the problem is that he isn't really even consciously aware of this struggle inside himself. It's playing out subconsciously. That is why he can come up with wilder and wilder excuses, that is his subconscious trying to protect himself. I think this probably happened on the other time line as well but Tabitha probably was not aware of it. I bet the guy is good at hiding his own suffering as well.

I would assume it would be in court, Lisa seems like the type of character to viciously attack others when she feels wronged. I almost expect her to try to play it off that the heroin was Tabatha's, and she only took it from her to dispose of it. Tabatha is framing her!!! Short of that I would expect the Lisa problem to remain a "she made a mistake" issue like with Danny, and not a "she is harmful to herself and others" we need to be careful how we interact with her.

Michael Deans

I agree that he has serious delusion issues. But I'm not certain they are nihilistic in nature. I think it's far more likely that he simply has accepted certain views in his mind to such an extent that he is incapable of questioning them. And so when anything comes up that might cause another person to question those beliefs he disregards them or just can't see them. His world is simple, and he can only view it through that simple lens likely created when he was a child. It seems like a generally good man to inflexible in his thinking and passive in his responses to deal with the world as it is or improve his life or the lives of those around him. His view is how the world works to him so anyone that does something that makes no sense to him must have made a mistake or done it on accident. He literally cannot comprehend any other worldview or any other motivation for those around him. This mentality is literally a con artist's wet dream. Because even if they robbed him and it was pointed out to him he still wouldn't believe it and would give them more money.

Lord Lucifer

Alan's position actually makes a lot of sense to me. It isn't like he's personally seen any of the evidence people have told him exists, in his mind its a he said she said type thing. There is also the fact that familial betrayal doesn't exist in his world view. To accept Lisa's betrayal would likely open a mental floodgate that he himself cannot handle. It's much easier to deny what everyone is saying that to reconstitute your worldview from the ground up. If the past few years have taught me anything, it's that people will go to unbelievable lengths to protect their worldview at the cost of literally anything and everything, including when reality stands up and starts slapping them in the face.

Youkai-sama

Wow! The depths of his nihilistic delusions is approaching clinical levels.

Stuart T

I agree with you Fourty, having Mrs Moore change any earlier would have been a copout. Her starting walking with Tabby was a big step for her that didn't just fix all her problems and even now that she probably feels that she's lost the daughter she was only noticing she had, starting to clean cook an organize is a tiny compared to getting a job. I REALLY want her mental and emotional struggle to come through on the job search and see them while on the job.

Thanks for the chapter! I'm still thinking at the latest after court-decision Alan will change his "they did nothing wrong"- stance. I really hoped though, that Tabitha ending up in a COMA would register more in his mind then just with "In the end they all realised they were wrong about my Tabby", thats the point that has to change. In a way he is not someone who does "wrong" things, he rather does nothing and once Tabitha or Ms. Moore or Grandma Laurie or whoever tell just how close to losing Tabitha they came because of INACTION, not because he upset some parents or the school or falsely accused someone and it led to revenge no, just because he did nothing more then as you wrote so fittingly "bark with no bite" to some police-guy. His DAUGHTER almost ended up DEAD after he blew off her telling him about the trampolin-incident. And the fact that he CAN indeed care and accept truth that go against his "normal reality" is shown when he connects Tabitha's bus-accident to the trampolin-injury and how he in the timeline, "eventually told Tabby about the bad things Uncle Danny and Aunt Lisa did".

Gopard

Yes, I think the main part here is the COURT, basically once Danny was found guilty and Lisa then too was sentenced, he accepted it as a fact. But for now he goes with the "innocent until proven guilty" tick and takes it to the extremes. And in some ways I actually get him, I mean Karen empasized how s "teenage girl (basically a child) realized the heroin abuse" and he missed such "obvious signs", but they themselves claimed "I wouldn't have believed Heroine in this town without seing it myself" and we know that teenage Tabby NEVER saw any signes and that her father and mother were the ones to tell her why her Aunt and uncle were gone! Now though we have Tabitha kind of "suddenly" blaming Lisa of drugs and this foreign families come in, with a very obvious bias and "rich-neighborhood prejudice" to make it seem like he basically supported the drug-use on purpose. While the whole low-key judgment of them being "bad" "trailer-trash" parents was never clearly said but also kinda shone through in certain ways. I think Alan suffered in from a few different factors, there is his "family is the most important" mentality, then the kind of: We live in a great country and town and "stuff like that doesn't happen here" and then the very big NOT MY PROBLEM attitude, many people take towards issues they would rather not deal with. These combined make Alan increadibly passive and even his "trust" is always "proven right" because the "problems with Tabby also solved themselves once they saw" (He thinks that in this chapter, even though Tabitha ended in a fucking Coma!) for him it is either "I was right and they shouldn't have condemned her/him" if someone is proven innocent or "it was neither my nor your Job to judge and the court did its Job, so I don't see what I should do differently!", if authorities/courts eventually deal with/follow through the accusations and crimes someone is accused of.

Alfredo

Thank you for releasing another good part. Mrs Moore is finally getting out of her shell! I’m hoping there will be a segment in the future with Mrs Moore and Mr Moore high school years.

There comes a point when willful ignorance to reality becomes insanity. If a truck isn’t parked right, and starts rolling down the street, you don’t say “X is a good driver. He wouldn’t forget to set the brake.” and then stand there and let it roll over you. Alan should at least acknowledge the possibility there could be a problem with Lisa by now. There should be some doubt. Does he think so little of his wife, daughter, and the people around her that his opinion of Lisa’s character is unassailable? If he does feel that way, then why? Perhaps he’s just terminally, permanently, locked on stupid? It’s good to look for the best in people but ignoring reality isn’t noble. Past a certain point it’s just irrational, dysfunctional, and starts making the character only two (or just one) dimensional.

Undead Writer

I. I don’t even know how you see this. I guess people see everything through their own lenses, but…..I just can’t understand how that’s the first thing that runs through your head.

Stephen Paynter

Don't forget that it was mentioned once that in her first time through, her parents told Tabby years later that her Aunt Lisa did heorin. Somehow or other her father came to accept that ... that time ... without a big crisis (that Tabby was aware of). It is possible!

Undead Writer

Thanks for the chapter! Love the real relationship talks here. Not many actually talk about things now. It is messy. It is hard. So much so. But you have to keep moving to grow and move forward.

As a guy who's not much of a natural leader, an arc of Alan struggling to learn how to be a good leader of his family intrigues me. Mixed in with the "we were expecting someone else to solve our problems" bits, I was half expecting to see something to the effect of "We've not been doing a *bad* job of raising Tabitha. We've not been raising Tabitha at all." ... Actually that could complement Alan's inner dialog at the start about materialism in that all he had really been providing for her was room and board. It would be a misperception on his part (but one he could understand) but he could come to a "realization" that "of course Tabitha left for a family with more money; I wasn't providing here with anything other than things, and I wasn't doing a very good job of that!" that could lead to a "the right thing for the wrong reason" play based on "you can't buy with what you don't have, so buy with what you do." Also, please don't make Alan's redemption a forgone conclusion, at least not yet. Maybe even leave it open for Lisa to not be a lost cause. (Was Danny an enabler for her darker proclivities?)

Love it so far. Rooting for Mrs moore

RD

Wait - her dad is Alan Moore? In that case, he's far more sane and normal than I'd expect.

Zach

Alan is eventually going to have to admit Lisa is a problem. I'm curious to see what causes it to happen. I'm glad Mrs. Moore is finally feeling motivated to do more than humor her daughter. Having one proactive parent will be good for the little one.

Sean

Let's go Mrs. Moore!!! I hope she turns things around and gets to a point where she's happy. The early parts of this story always hurt because you can read all these efforts Tabitha is going to to try and better her life, and her parents are this huge contrast to that. Like they were fine before and after the trailer was cleaned because to them the difference in appearance wouldn't affect their mentality.

You fool, Warren is dead!

He is kind of a dipshit, yeah. If this story took place in 2023 he'd probably convince himself he's an alpha male. I like how you've written the changes in your characters. And then there's this guy
