Give Ashley a break! She's been victimizd six ways to Sunday and is still being victimized by her Aunt who can't or won't provide decent clothing, etc and seems to push her out the door to sink or swim. She's been victimized her entire life, by the middle sister who beats her (with fists leaving scores of bruises on top of bruises) and the older sister who tacitly supports this abusive behavior. Her father is one sick puppy who can't bring himself to relate to a daughter with a conspicuous deformity (lazy eye, sorry I'm not PC). Her mother appears to be lazy and useless. Her classmates treat her and 'tubby' Tabby as the lowest of the low. Her mother keeps her out of school, minus the homeschooing part, for the enirety of her first semester of her freshman year. Once Tabby belatedly frees her from her from her family's torment (Aunty excepted) she wants to commiserate with her ONLY middle school friend (who unexplainedly has transformed from an ugly duckling to a swan) and is mentally a sixty year old version of her of her pre-MRI self. ROUND PEG SQUARE HOLE! Enough to drive anyone off the deep end!!!

Cano Mendez

She's a real porcupine, for sure, and her neuroses and insecurities are guiding her actions more than anything else. Being a victim of abuse hasn't helped her develop a healthy way to form relationships, and almost all of hers have been power dynamics with people who have either controlled her life through violence or fiat (parents). Kindness doesn't genuinely exist -- the closest camaraderie she's experienced was being miserable with Tabby back in the day. (gotta hit shift+enter, dammit - keep posting without finishing) Ashlee's worldview is so warped that she doesn't even have a hobby or a particular interest to pursue -- she just seeks safety. Staying home and running away are just means of evading what she finds, ultimately, painful. If she doesn't have something or someone good to attach to, then she'll have an empty life like Tabby from before the restart.

Dashinhi

Clarissa was the girl who stole Tabs "Goblin Princess" binder. Tabitha advocated against her expulsion, so I'm hoping this isn't a heel-face-heel turn, or even a heel-nuch-sucka turn - come on, Clary, shut that Ashlee down! (And now I'm wondering, after Elena's exposition, was Ashlee 'topping from the bottom'; is she an undetected Sith [*cough* gungan *cough*] in the Phantom Menace all along? Dang me, I felt sorry for her!)

Marcus Cassin

I know I'm a few days late, but.... Can I get a recap on who Clarissa is? Because I'm pretty hazy on why she would be open to listening to all this hate.

It's truly shocking how selective memory can be. It's plausible that her staling it actually doesn't come to mind even when she's accused of that. That said, from what little I've heard, that would be a strong indicator of some serious mental issues, but given the backstory that's almost a given already.

benjamin shropshire

I suspect that Tabitha "getting thought" to Ashlee is an impossibility because there isn't isn't a door nob on that side of that door. At a guess Tabitha will try and it will go *badly* because Ashlee's looking at anything she does thought colored glass. Even acts of kindness with no possible personal gain can be seen as selfish attacks if the recipient wants to see them that way. The development arc is going to have to mostly initiate from Ashlee's side of the door. If Tabitha's actions keep defying Ashlee model (e.g. Tabitha doesn't ignore her but also fails to go thought on an expected "attack", or Ashlee learns that Tabitha stood up for her and then tried to conceal that) Ashlee ending up in a "I have no idea what to believe" crisis could be a very realistic development arc.

Tabs: Well there goes everything I thought I knew!

This could be very interesting. Ashlee seems like she could be a legit antagonist without needing to be a cardboard villain. She has an internally consistent motivation and isn't trying to be "bad" but can become enough of a problem to progress a plot. Part of that seem to come from her coming across as a little more nuts than the average person. At least a bit isolated from reality if nothing else (and with good cause). Which can make for an interesting arc ... as long as it matches close enough to real word psychological disorders. When I start thinking about this kind of arcs I start wondering how much Jordan Peterson would charge as a editor/technical consultant? (Regardless of what you think of the man's political positions, he's a gold mine for "how people's minds actually work and how people interact and not just how we want to say those things work".)

The Dapper Lemon

Correct indeed. My main issue was with the character mentioning no child left behind, as this is set around 96, if I recall correctly. Additionally, the Improving America's Schools act didn't receive the widespread publicity or average citizen recognition that the No Child Left Behind stuff did.

Douglas Thomas

The Improving America's Schools Act of 1994 also had provisions to improve education of disadvantaged students and hold schools responsible. The idea of 'no child left behind' existed before Bush was sworn in. The bill was the first bill introduced by Speaker John Boehner in January 2001.

The Dapper Lemon

Not to be that guy but.... no child left behind wasn't introduced until 2001, and signed into action until 2002 by George W. Bush.

Magical Puttemtator

Wow I remember learning about the No Child Left Behind act when I was studying education, and it was indeed a bust. It's so cool how you brought it up!

rizen

Clinton gets impeached and convicted, vp becomes president, but al gore wins presidency, not Bush.

Undead Writer

Thanks for the chapter! Was really hoping that Tabitha found her, but this is good too. All that rumor drama does not sit well with me. But that’s life I guess.

Orthen

I guess so. In her mind it's probably justified for proofing how evil the person that replaced her best friend is.

Orthen

Very interesting! I suspected we would get to see Ashlee when you said you would "(re)introduce our new antagonist". I wonder if Tabitha will eventually get through to Ashlee. Ashlee might even help (intentionally or unintentionally) make the time traveling scenario more credible to Elena. Both Clarissa and Ashlee are very tragic cases and it will be interesting to see how it'll turn out for them.

Orthen

I could imagine and find it likely that Ashlee is aware the bag is stolen, but she probably doesn't mind bending the truth a little to show how "evil" Tabitha is. She believes that Tabitha is a literal imposter that somehow replaced her best friend and that's not even that far from the truth.

FortySixtyFour

Some do and some don't spend a lot of time in their head, it'll vary. I tried to be careful to show that while Ashlee was definitely deeply introspective, she absolutely wasn't being mature or even all that rational.

Stuart Thwaites

Is Ashlee being manipulative when she's talking about the presents? Didn't she actually steal them from her sister and blamed Tabitha?

twentytoo

it seems odd Ashlee and some of the other side characters have these detail introspective monologues. Tabitha has an old person soul and wisdom so she would somewhat aware and conscious of her actions. I also feel like these monologues for the side characters seem like they are "describing more than showing", like big info dump of feelings. I guess these kids/ pre-teens in this world are just very emotionally aware.

Jeanie6754

Happy Thanksgiving, take care of your mental health today. Enjoy the tasty food 😋

Zach

It's also really sad (but makes too much sense) that Clarissa is about to be a minion pitted against Tabitha a second time already.

FortySixtyFour

Turns out.. no. I'll find a way to reword the sentiment

Zach

I really don't know how to feel about this. On the one hand, she's an angry kid, which is unfair, but she's got good reasons to be unreasonable. On the other hand, did she steal that bag? It's fine if she's just pissed that "Tabitha" called her out on it, but it's like she doesn't even remember where she got it from, like that whole payback/survival tactic is just blocked out. In which case, yeah, her going to school is a waste of time, she's not even on the same continent as being open to eventually not being angry and on guard.

Matt

Did the whole “no child left behind” thing exist before the George W Bush administration?

Porkopio

Ashlee's a whole bunch of hate. So she is the antagonist this time?

Too Much Sanity May Be Madness

Poor Ashlee. The worst part of it is, even though she has a bunch of stuff wrong, the big thing, the thing people would call her crazy about, she has (almost) exactly right. The Tabitha she knew has been replaced.

WarStrider72

Thanks foe the chapter boss! And Happy Thanksgiving!

twentytoo

happy American thanksgiving
