“Okay.” Narcissa gave him a radiant smile and picked up the razor from the sink. “Why does the label matter?” she mused, both to herself and to him. “I’m more of a wife as your concubine than I ever was when I actually held that title.”

“Tonks and Hermione in the kitchen?”
“No. They’re waiting for you out on the street,” Sirius explained with a shake of his head. “Look, Harry, when Narcissa comes down, don’t dawdle. Take her and leave. Hermione already has your Hogwarts letter. Once you’re done with your shopping, book a room in the Leaky Cauldron and spend the night there, okay?”
“Why?”
“Snivellus is here,” Sirius muttered. He grimaced and shrugged. “If Narcissa sees him she might just snap the bastard’s neck with her bare hands. Maintaining his cover is one thing but to quietly watch while Lucius had her dragged out of her home and sold off is just psychotic. You know I’m not exactly a fan of him but-”

The pub was empty and Tom perked up when they entered, only to slump back in his seat as they passed him and piled into the backyard that also served as the secret entrance to Diagon Alley.

Hermione considered the idea for a few seconds, then frowned and shook her head. “It’s too expensive for me. It’ll probably cost me several months worth of allowance.” She bit her lip and groaned quietly. “Maybe I can ask the shopkeeper to set it aside and convince Madam Pince to buy it for the library when we get to Hogwarts.”
Harry reached out, grabbed the book, and pulled it off the bookshelf.
“Harry, be careful! What’re you doing!?”
Harry carefully placed the book on top of the pile in her basket, shooting her a crooked grin as he straightened. “Call it an early birthday present.”
“You’re… no…. Harry, I can’t accept it. You can’t… that’s too generous. You can’t buy it for me.”
“Okay, then I’ll buy it for Padfoot. It’ll be in Grimmauld’s library and I’m sure he won’t mind you borrowing it whenever you want. Grab him a nice, juicy steak from the Leaky Cauldron on our way home and he might even let you take it with you to Hogwarts for the year,” Harry teased, his emerald eyes sparkling mischievously.
Hermione stared at him with a strange expression on her face for a few seconds before she suddenly lunged forward and wrapped her arms around his neck, pulling herself flush against his body. Before Harry could react, their lips connected. She groaned quietly as he immediately deepened the kiss, their tongues dueling playfully.
They were snogging in the middle aisle of Flourish and Blott’s, completely oblivious to the people staring at them.
Tonks stared at Harry and Hermione with wide eyes, unable to believe what she was seeing. Her perfect plan to get them together had been destroyed by a single book. Her plan would have taken her a month to implement and would have culminated with a passionate kiss on the Hogwarts Express. She had been so confident she had even made a bet to that effect with Narcissa-
“Hey, weren’t you reading that book last night?” Tonks hissed, whirling around to glare at her new friend.
“I have absolutely no idea what you’re talking about.”
“You had that book in your hand. You were sitting in the armchair by the radio, waiting for news of Harry’s verdict and you were reading that book.”
“I think you need to get your eyesight checked, my dear. But first I do believe you owe me something.” Narcissa held out her hand, smirking as Tonks grumbled and slapped five galleons into her waiting palm.
Notes:
Sorry for being a day late, had electricity issues yesterday! I love giving Narcissa a more tragic past, mostly because I believe it adds a lot of depth to her character. As you can see in this chapter, however, she also has a playful side that comes out in the protective environment provided by Harry. It may well be the fact Narcissa and Harry cannot have a child who would be used by others (say a bitter Lucius as he finally realizes just how completely stupid it was to lose Narcissa) to screw up the Houses of Black and Potter. Can she have a child - probably. Can it be officially acknowledged? She may deem it too great a risk.

I got to disagree. Narcissa isn't too old for a baby. She was in her 30s in the books. Even here, with the age-up characters, she would still be in her early 40s at the oldest. Witches live longer. Euphemia was described as elderly, and both she and Fleamont had long given up on having children, so she must have been older when she finally had James. Was Narcissa sterilized by Lucius? How did Narcissa end up his property, anyways? She was a daughter of House Black. Why did her father and Arcturus do it to her? Surely not greed, since they had wealth already. Were they that desperate to join Voldemort? Bellatrix wasn't a slave of Rudolphus.
