I've been seeing some tree sparrows around recently so I really wanted to paint some! They are adorable and so so small.
Has anyone got a favourite backyard bird these days?

I have a bird I see everyday on the way to drop off my kid to school. I still haven’t been able to find out what kind it is, it’s black with a red collar and it looks like it rules that side of town.

I discovered a Kingfisher just 5 minutes away from my home soo does that count as a backyard bird? :D

The Audubon app is really good too!

Haha, oh the changes in our behaviour we make for animals. I love it.

I don't believe that these cuties are real, I need to see them with my own eyes

I didn't really see any wrens this year, oddly! I miss them

So cool!

I can't imagine living in a place with wild cockatoos... Australia is high on my future travel list

I'd love to have some jackdaws hanging around. I can't even get my local crows interested in peanuts.

You should get a field guide! You can usually find them used/inexpensive pretty easily!

I discovered that the male Cardinal is roosting in the rafters of my back porch. I have to remember to not open my back door at night because it spooks him and he flies into the cold darkness. (!)

I love the european robins. ❤️

I have a couple Carolina Wren that come by my feeder. I love how they jump around, their little tail bobbing up and down.

A Red-Tailed hawk tearing up some food in the woods right next to my backyard!

I'm loving the Juncos right now!

I'm enjoying watching two juvenile Australian magpies growing up at the moment. I have a big birdbath out the back that they love to mess around in, it's hilarious how playful they are. I live in an area with masses of small corellas, and while it's not right in my backyard, taking walks though my town's parklands as the corellas feast and play is often a highlight of my day. They're so cute and silly 😍

The field behind my apartment floods in the winter so I get to watch ducks and geese do their thing. I should get a field guide so I know what I'm actually looking at ahaha.

It's reeeeally cold here so my feeders have been quiet since early December. All I've spotted is the occasional pair of jackdaws. So thank goodness for everyone's lovely bird art and photos on Insta 😍 You're keeping me going until it warms up enough for the tinies to return...

Chickadees are precious

We had a backyard feeder set up last fall with seed and we got cardinals, sparrows, tufted titmice, and blue jays among other birds. It was funny seeing the blue jays struggle because unfortunately they were too big for the feeder. My favorites are the occasional black capped chickadee we’d see from time to time, because of the way they feed taking seeds to nearby tree branches to crack them open!

Hahaha!
Birds are Real
I always love sparrows (and their little van dyke beards) and spotted towhees with their piercing russet-red eyes, but don't see them nearly as much as the bigger and bossier birds. There are tons of crows and seagulls around, especially on garbage day. Someone in my neighborhood left out a mini pumpkin on their porch well into December and a seagull finally grabbed it, dropped it on another roof, and watched it roll down and explode on the sidewalk next to a napping cat. 😅

I recently saw a sharp-shinned hawk trying to sample from a bird feeder buffet! Always an experience to see a bird of prey up close 🦅

I always get excited to see juncos!

I've been putting out pomegranates on an old oriole feeder and now I have regular visits from the verdins, which are my favorite southwest US bird! Also have a juvenile Cooper's hawk that stops by frequently, I think to sample from the pigeon buffet (or at least try to, I don't think they've been successful yet).

Oh! And for anyone who has had pixilation issues on here before: does this one look any better?

I love sparrows! I know they're common, but we just started getting dark-eyed juncos (slate colored) in the area, and I absolutely adore them and how hoppy they are.
