There isn't a hard limit, they have mentioned now and then the major limitation is the Trainer's ability to keep up the relationship. Only so much time and stamina! Pokémon don't mind being balled now and then, it's restful, but they don't like doing it for long periods of time. Brandy hasn't done it at all yet and a lot of Trainers never do since they've got such strong connections with the Pokémon they have. Ace Trainers are common because it's easier to handle a lot of Pokémon with similar personalities. Shay is a Dark Type trainer and so all her Pokémon are impulsive, like her. Brandy likely isn't going to be an Ace Trainer and the challenge for a mixed team is having personalities that play off each other well, so no one feels left out. As a Trainer inherits stamina and skills from their Pokémon and learns how to manage relationships, their ability to handle a larger team grows. Gym's all teach lessons on how to do this with their badges, the Grass gym for example is a lesson about handling large groups and appealing to common desires. One that Brandy hadn't really learned yet, so she fluked one half of it and flunked it at the end. Official Tournament fights have set limits on numbers, so you can't just bring an army with you. Most Trainer fights you agree terms before you begin, though there's always the absolutely not Tournament legal "Anything goes" chaos option.

Is there a limit to party size like in the games? And if so, how do trainers handle maintaining relationships with the Pokémon that aren’t currently with them, or do they just not catch as many Pokémon?

Shay is just kind of like that

Alice Hiess

That ending can be taken as a less in “How to ruin a moment in under 5 seconds.”
