this is true! they mentioned monty hall to imply that by going first, they had more of a chance at "losing," so there was no loss to letting them go first.

Thoughts on the Monty Hall reference... by firing five times in a row, Outis' chance of survival was 1/6, or ~17%. But if they had "switched" their chamber Monty Hall-style by randomly spinning the barrels after each trigger pull, their chance of survival would have been (5/6)^5, or ~40%. Everyone would probably have been just as awed/horrified if Outis had gone for this more survivable option. But Outis would have known. Maybe they couldn't pass up the extra chance to die.
