also, my more coherent reaction: I think the writing here is really fascinating, and finds sweetness in a moment where you can see limits in the adults' understanding. The teacher seems genuinely concerned for baby Sugar(!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)'s wellbeing, and wants her to to thrive ... but also seems like they can't fathom mental illness just existing in a person without trauma, or neurodivergence existing at all! And they are focused on bringing Sugar to a place of "normal" without accepting her for who she is, weirdness and all. And of course that aligns naturally with their swerve into homophobia right before Sugar comes inside (and seemingly beginning to bring up Sugar being intersex as something she has to Overcome to make friends Normally?). Maria in her own way seems very loving and affectionate towards Sugar, appropriately horrified by the idea that Sugar could be abused, but takes in the discussion of normalcy quietly and then tries to press it on Sugar, though playfully. But in all that you can really see that Sugar is so comfortable and happy around Maria, and that Maria loves her a lot! Definitely a comic making me think a lot today, about how the limits of understanding social/cultural/mental divergence and illness still cause harm even in mostly positive situations, but even if love doesn't solve everything, it can still be there.
