While reading about the runic system couldn't help but have another thought... guess Ard is about to be thrust into another "adventure."

Leander

That still does not make much sense. He just seems like he refuses to truly engage with anyone. I can somewhat see the hiding part, but that can be mitigated by getting closer to the cloaks who wouldn‘t let one of their own be experimented on. And the temporary companions part makes even less sense as he can‘t know the future, he doesn‘t know how deep his bond will be with them unless he has already decided that he wants nothing to do with anyone. Add to that his ardent refusal to even properly become friends with the only people who have tried to get closer to him, and that just makes him seem distant and aloof and lonely. Which seems like a huge contradiction after he decided that wanted t solve the conspiracy of the extermination of the Matabar, an endeavor that will require every help he can get. That also doesn‘t explain why he didn‘t contact the cloaks for four days.

As for why he’s keeping the second star hidden: > He hadn’t planned to practice them until spring, when he intended to tell Aversky and the Second Chancery about the progress he’d made. He wasn’t in a hurry to reveal his newfound power, especially since he’d lit his second Star — and his Green Star had nine rays to boot — after less than half a year of training. If word got out about that, he might wind up like Lorlov had… Strapped to a table in some Guild lab, his brain under a microscope. > And Ardi still had no real reason to trust the Cloaks or Aversky, either. They were merely temporary companions on his path, as was Arkar.

No explanation? Bro this story has heavy mystery and crime solving themes, if you're following along every situation makes sense. They going to the Dandy cuz he's been remarkably involved in several suspected Spider incidents including and especially what happened with the jackets. Agency? Ard explicitly chose to become a trainee of a military organization. Military means following orders. Trainee means everyone and their dog can give you orders. And Ardan has wanted to participate in all the investigations. These people shot him, nearly killed Boris, and are likely the ppl behind Mountain Predator. I'd say you'd have a point with the Jackets, but personally I don't mind the forced into a deal with the devil trope.

Narratively, the Second Chancery is super annoying. They pretty much exist to get Ard into situations with basically no explanation and Ard has zero agency in it at all. It was interesting the first time but man is it irritating playing catch up with Ard to figure out what distraction is getting in the way of what’s actually interesting.

Thanks!

Wasn't he told almost explicitly not to do that?

I enjoy the depth given to the magic system, it gives enough detail so the reader has some expectation of what can be done within its boundaries, whilst not too vague as to make anything possible without consequence. More limitations would be nice to see so we can judge just how powerful a character is and what they should not be able to do. I have seen some contrived points in the story where Ard is forced into situations due to happenstance and we meet character or factions that were hinted to only a chapter ago, but I find it easier to overlook these as the story continues with nice world building and interesting magic system. It would be nice to see some characters given more depth but I understand as Ard is not close to anyone, that can be difficult to achieve without a pov shift. Perhaps that would be nice for say Boris or Ards’ brother, whom I forget the name of but feel like is suppose to be an important character that hasn’t risen to the expectation yet. We hear a lot about past characters from Ard in hindsight, it would be great to just witness these interesting moments between characters, conversations with Mart comes to mind. Maybe that’s too slice of life for this story though. I look forward to a solid story hook and maybe Ard not spending the whole story in university but exploring the other countries on the map with a proper journey and destination. For now the Harry Potter style school of learning is nice and we are learning a lot about the city. Thanks Author 🙏 Sorry for the ramble.

Why is Ard still so damn passive? It has been four days since the attack and he didn't think to go to the chancery hq to tell them everything he knows or talked to anyone? Why? And why is he still keeping his second star hidden?

Thank you for the chapter.

SkyGold

Great chapter! It does make me laugh a bit though how absolutely every Tavser wears their branded jewellery, as though they need to have a racism license. There's a very wealthy amulet maker out there somewhere.

Silver Beard

Seems like the skin spell he should take to market.
