not a bad idea, but i worry the nitrite would decompose. What we're getting is NaNO3 + SO2 -> NaNO2 + SO3, not sure if that goes, but if it does, SO3 is viciously reactive on its own and might destroy the nitrite somehow. ah well, it's complicated, i'll give it a go once i've exhausted all the low temperature approaches.

If you are happy working with SO2 and NOx gasses then the method where you bubble SO2 through molten sodium nitrate might work for you, it only produces nitrite and sulfate products although the yield might not be great since nitrite also reacts and you have to work out where to stop it. There might be some sort of aprotic solvent or flux you could use to get the temperature lower, protic solvents would probably result in acidification and rapid breakdown, DMSO might work? I have personally been looking to try a photolytic method where NO3- under UV irradiation produces NO2-, it is enhanced by running at high pH and with a hydroxyl radical scavenger like formate.

I liked it. Save it. If you can monetize it, do it. (These ideas are from an amateur, so weigh them accordingly.) Like Uranyl said, is there some way to make NO & NO₂ in the proper ratios so that you can make HNO₂? What if you made the acid and then added NaOH? Chemplayer made some with molten sodium nitrate and spaghetti. Interesting but hardly useful ;). You can make NaNO₂ from some NaNO₃ and a metal, like copper or iron?
