its something to a consider. the issue is that such solvents aren't easy to come by for the amateur. but it's definitely something to try.

For the direct hydrolysis, would an aprotic solvent help? Maybe a slow addition to DMSO with a carbonate, or maybe even CaO. Alternately, it might be possible to combine the acid directly with powdered CaO or MgO and a bit of heat to melt it.

Can’t isopropyl nitrite be used to make sodium azide? Which in its way is also a useful reagent to get diazo compounds
