Yes agreed, the question is can you produce what you want without it costing too much

Very interesting! Indeed, ammonium nitrate is getting harder and harder to find. Even in mixed form. So much regulations these days. But that's not an issue for a chemist, we can make anything from anything else.

There used to be but it is now very hard to find in the UK a fertiliser sold under the name "nitrate of Chalk" or "Nitro Chalk" 27-0-0 that was a mixture of Ammonium Nitrate and crushed stone, the Ammonium Nitrate being easily extracted by filtration. This was often confused with CAN (Calcium Ammonium Nitrate) There are two grades of CAN available in the UK from Yara, greenhouse grade for Fertigation and field grade. The field grade is contaminated with Latex as it must have been used in some Latex processiong plant before being bagged for fertiliser. I have also recently found a source of Calcium nitrate all be it in solution from builders merchants as "Chloride free accelerator" for concrete. Yara the world largest producers of Nitrates sell a product "NitCal" that is a mixture of Calcium and Potassium Nitrates but I am yet to find it in 25kg sacks. https://www.yara.com/industrial-nitrogen/concrete-additives/concrete-setting-accelerator/ Material Safety data sheets are your friend when it comes to finding sources
