The "explosion" may be due to the confinement of pinching with pliers. Perhaps rather than pinching, it would be safer to bend the match to snap the glass tube. Your powders look like they would have benefited from being sifted to break up lumps. I wonder if a finer fuel (starch or icing sugar) would give more consistent ignition (that is, a narrower range between a fizzle and an explosion).
