I miss renting movies. I can go to the library, but it's definitely not the same Getting a physical disc in the mail (Netflix still offers that service) or watching something digitally is absolutely not the same. The entire ritual is gone, you had to talk to people, learn stuff, etc I don't think the current system is better, it took out the social component and replaced it with weighted algorithms to get you to pump more time in. It just feels like one step closer to compulsive gambling. Even word of mouth has been gamed for advertising purposes (Make no mistake, all these engagement algorithms are built off of the idea that those centers of the brain can be abused for profit! I read the Microsoft white papers in college. They're deeply disturbing. The entire point is to make it so you are physically and mentally unable to stop engaging. The papers even included profit model arguments based on the assumption they could build systems that trigger the gambler brain.)

Oh, Niiiiice. I love that! I always loved going in to rent movies, since a kid, but when I was 19, I was in Blockbuster literally every day. Many times renting the same movies over again too. lol I had a rewards pass or something where you could get the 3rd free? I don't remember exactly. But I do remember when I rented all 3 LOTR movies (not for the first time), the guy behind the counter was like, well someone's going to have a good night, a long night, but a good one. hahaha Good times.

Growing up, I lived right behind the video store, so every weekend I'd hop over the wall and look at every shelf and I must have rented the same movies 15 times each. Best part was it was next to a kick ass Chinese restaurant, an equally Kick-Ass pizza joint and a Walgreens right across the street for any other treats and my weekends were set. I felt like a king with $20 on a Friday night.😁
