When I think about no punishment for the Doctor, I envision the Madeline Kahn GIF from Clue: ‘it’s …it…it…the..it ..f-flames…flames…flames…’. In short, I’m incensed. Intentions be damned, he put everyone in danger. The ONLY mitigation was that he showed great remorse. Whereas Tom had a defiant attitude when confronted by the Captain. Of course the Doc had time to understand the error of his ways. Tom, to this day, I think believes getting involved was the right decision. I think Tom won’t do it again because he won’t risk his position on the ship again. I don’t know if the Doc was humbled enough to not repeat his mistakes. And that’s the real issue - why I think some longer term consequence was warranted. I would have removed his Emergency Command Protocols until he attended online command courses. Setting that aside, it was a good episode. I like the morality questions raised. To me, self-aware, able to learn and improve itself, a basis of ethics that are consistent with the standards of their creators and sufficient complexity/memory are required to declare a hologram a separate sentient entity with personal privileges. AIs are no where near that today. Still Skynet could happen. Torpedoes: if they can retrofit the nacelles, they have sufficient technology to build as many torpedoes as needed. Good podcast.

One problem with this episode is that once again the writers were out of ideas and just went back and pulled in an old enemy and reused the whole hologram rights idea which was run into the ground during Voyager. The main problem with this plot in bringing back an old foe from 3 seasons ago is that there is no way that the Hirogen could possibly be there. Since the last time Voyager encountered the Hirogen in "The Killing Game Parts I and II" they had 4 separate massive jumps in space towards the Alpha Quadrant. These massive jumps took them roughly 35 years closer to home and away from Hirogen space. Now I understand they are a far flung race but there is no f'n way in hell that they beat Voyager to this location and built a space station. So how in the hell did they get there? Redonkulous. Ok, can we just get over the whole "we only had so many torpedoes and used them up by now" discussion? Obviously the crew figured out some way to build photon torpedoes and replenish stocks a long time ago just like they have had to do everything else themselves. Suspend disbelief and move on. So Garrett, just because we were only shown 8 Hirogen beaming down in the one clip does not mean that more were beamed down before or after that group. If I have to hear RDM say AI one more time I am going to have a conniption.

I've always liked this episode. This is the 2nd time the Dr has almost left Voyager. Considering he doesn't really seem to have a bad life there he certainly jumps on every chance to leave that he is given.

My solution is load the holograms into a few of those holocube things (like the follow-on from "Elementary, dear Data" where Picard tricks Moriarty into thinking he's left the holodeck, but in this case, the holograms KNOW they are in a simulation that's ongoing, forever.

Iden had the one-track mind of 'assimilating' all holograms into his own "collective" whether or not they were sentient, self-aware or whatever you want to call it. I'm sure Iden would have liked Moriarty.....whose mission (albeit accidentally) was to defeat Data, another sentient but artificial lifeform rather than Holmes. Was this before or after the Doctor's "Photons be Free" holonovel becomes popular with the Mark I EMH's in the alpha quadrant who were relegated to the spice mines of Kessell (or wherever....)
