I'm a long time TNG fan but watching Voyager through for the first time (and loving it). In my opinion, this is the best episode ever of all of Star Trek. I was bawling my eyes out for the entire second half of the episode, and probably for a full hour after. Oh the internalized shame! Imagine if her father had just defended her in that moment instead of pulling out the old "boys will be boys" line. So many parents don't have that moment of clarity and communication that Tom and B'Elanna had and instead end up projecting their shame onto their child. Shame and fear of differences truly damage our species more than any enemy ever could, and yet we do it to ourselves. I haven't listened to the recap yet, but I'm sure y'all feel the same.

I loved this episode as well. I think Tom has High Emotional Intelligence. In early years he put up a great facade. Now, he’s able to access it and apply it to his marriage. Like others, the scene in sickbay is A+ in my opinion. First part: Tom sending Tuvok+ out of the room to talk to his wife. Second, B’Elana being willing to finally talk about what is going on with her. THIS is why they will have a strong marriage. Trust. They will fail time to time, but this conflict will strengthen them. Third, her acceptance that Tom is NOT her father (and Tom spotting the underlying issue). In my head canon, at some point when they get back to the Alpha Quadrant, Tom takes his Father-In-Law aside and tells him to make sure B’Elana knows it wasn’t her fault.

I could write pages about how Lineage resonates with me. This episode is easily in my top 10 favorite episodes of voyager. I am 3rd generation half Mexican on my dad's side and half white (British and Irish) on my mother's side . Being mixed race, I related with B'elanna as I got older and rewatched the show. Growing up in a city that majority of the population was Hispanic I was told that I was not Mexican enough to belong. Because I couldn't speak Spanish I wasn't Mexican. So when someone assumed I was white I didn't correct them. I leaned into my white side because I wasn't accepted into the Mexican culture at school. I agree with Roxann when she says that as a child she didn't notice how my heritage effected my social life. As I grew up and I moved to a city that there where more white people in the population, I noticed that I didn't really belong there either. I realized I was raised in the Mexican culture and I had a hard time adapting for a period of time. People say that being mixed race you don't feel like you belong to either race. It's true. Of course I have learned to accept both sides as I grew older but it's that feeling of not belonging that this episode really hits home with me. In other B'elanna centered she is slowly rediscovering her Klingon heritage I root for her ❤️ When I was 11 watching Voyager for the first time I wasn't able to see the deep layers of this episode.

Absolutely right. If anything I'd think its odd that B'Elanna knew so much about genetics and felt okay just deleting parts of DNA and that the results weren't a pile of goo.

We're all our own worst critics, but man, I wish Robbie would cut Tom Paris a break sometimes. Nobody is perfect and Tom's flaws will get pointed out 20 times but good things are rarely noticed.

This was always one of my favorite episodes and probably the episode that really got me to connect with star trek. I had the exact same experience as Garrett as an asian growing up around those who did not look like me as well as the feeling of wishing not being different... This episode is so good but when it comes on I know I have to prepare for all the feelings and emotions this brings up. I remember having very similar experiences as young b'lanna when I watched this episode too and remembering how much it spoke to me then at an age when I was struggling. This episode is what star trek at its best can be!

Thank you Roxann and to you guys for having her on. I love this episode; it is one of the best episodes ever made in TV history and perfect Trek in balancing all the themes. I love B'Elanna, who was so beautifully written and acted. I remember as a 15 year old seeing Blood Fever and within a week I'd mapped out the PT relationship in my imagination and I had them get married and have a daughter in season 7, so when it all started coming true - and very close to my imagination - I was so happy! I'm in the UK and we were usually 2-3 months behind on air dates, but I couldn't wait. I remember going on dial-up internet the day after US air date to one of those sites where folk would type up episode scripts so I could read it. It was so important to me that I also sent $20 to a Canadian friend who taped the show for me and sent it over and, because the UK VHS was PAL rather than US NTSC, I even saved up my Saturday job money to buy a NTSC compatible video player. All for Lineage. I was not disappointed one bit.

So nice to see Roxann. Remember that Icheb began seriously studying genetics after his experience with his parents and his knowledge was enough to rewrite his dna enough to support living without the cortical node he removed to give to Seven. So also being an ex-borg he probably is as competent as many a professional.

Icheb was shown to have genetics expertise before, starting in "Child's Play" when he found out about his own genetic modifications and he's seen studying them at the end. Then in "Imperfection", he devises more gene resequencing techniques for himself so he that he can safely donate his cortical node to Seven. And in "Shattered", we see him tutoring Naomi about genetics via the jigsaw puzzle in Cargo Bay 2.

As a child whose Father walked out and never looked back, this was an extremely powerful episode for me. I think B'Elanna was often under used as a character but I think the episodes that she did have were often the most moving. I think we are all recovering from some kind of childhood trauma.

This episode circles back to season 1 in the episode “Faces”. Where B’Elanna introduces us to the relationship with her father and dealing with her peers and the bigotry regarding her mixed heritage. A full circle as she doesn’t want Tom to be like her dad and doesnt want her child to experience what B’Elanna experienced.
