I wasn't a fan of this episode either, but I do think there was something compelling in the opener that maybe Robbie and Garrett missed -- when they finally reveal Seven's face, we can see that her Borg implants are gone 😮 (cut to opening credits)

Yes, Garrett, Chakotay absolutely flirted with Harry sometimes. 😂 (Also, I clearly put off this episode because I loathe the actual episode on a few levels, but you guys nailed it! HR disaster and entirely effed up and muddy consent-wise, among other things. But Trek totally plays it for laughs/plots with the genders reversed too - Barclay had Troi (and I think Crusher) as holographic sex-goddesses during his holo-addiction on TNG. The writers made Troi counsel Riker to be understanding about Barclay’s depiction of holo-Riker until she saw his version of her.)

not gonna go into the Seven/Chakotay story... but regarding the lengthy discussion about the teaser. Yes, nothing else was done except showing that piano and metronome, that someone was playing it, and in the end revealing that Seven was playing it. BUT... the way this was shot, combined with the piece of music that was being played... It felt ominous like we were going into a horror or mystery episode. Of course, the rest of the episode didn't follow through with that... but the teaser itself I think is one of the most intriguing ones they ever made - you can't tell me you watch this and don't be like: "ok... why? since when can she play the piano? why such a dark setting? what's about to happen?" ... and this - if I'm not mistaken - is EXACTLY what a "TEASER" is supposed to do, is it not? xD

When originally aired I also had a major cringe issue with a Holotay creation and the relationship. After 25 years, the cringe issue is still a major problem but C7 is not as hard of a ‘no’ for me. The biggest scene correction IMO should have been the Doctor gently letting her know that Holotay wasn’t cool; (‘use of an individuals’s likeness for holoprogram is prohibited in Star Fleet). I get she wouldn’t naturally anticipate those rules so someone needed to tell her. Having said that, I don’t loathe C7 this time nearly as much as I used to. And I loved seeing a playful Chakotay. I wish we had more of that. I can rationalize that of all the men in the ship, Chakotay is the one assigned to work interpersonal issues as part of his job. He’s got that touchy/feeliy thing going. That combined with him being handsome, makes sense that there’s a potential interest from her perspective. His perspective is a little harder to see. But at the end, when real Chakotay encouraged her to socialize, it made me think that maybe he was starting to see her need to be more human. I will say I was moved by the look Seven gave her alcove when she was supposed to be going to bed. There was such loathing on her face for her alcove. It was a real moment of empathy for me. As episodes go, it’s still low for that weird opener and no consequence for violations of Chakotay’s privacy, but it’s not a ‘1’. I’m fine with a 5.5.

Yeah, this episode was pretty lousy… it was not fun and was a bit painful to watch. I almost totally skipped it. Continuity issues start and continue as a result of this episode. 🤮

What I feel all these people in the comments defending the ep are missing is that Barclay and Geordi were confronted face to face within both episodes and were very clearly told that what they did was morally WRONG, totally against regulations, and they suffered the consequences. Troi is a counselor and empath and she was NOT OKAY with Barclay's misuse of her image even though she understood where his compulsions were stemming from. This episode lacked any kind of scene where Seven suffers repercussions from crossing ethical boundaries.

Again they talk about the food about Chakotay being vegetarian. All of the food on the ship, except maybe for what Neelix cooks, is synthetic. It is all basically "Impossible Meat" or whatever that stuff is. It might look like a chicken, but it isn't really chicken. lol

One big cringe-a-thon for me. The way they dressed holo-Chakotay in a man-sized toddler suit on top of the forced romance makes me want to scream. How to neuter a main male character - an alpha male at that - to serve a plot 101. Bleh!

I think it would have been okay if it was him because it’s someone she actually had a relationship with. With the other situations there was no prior romantic relationship. In a way it would be like playing an intimate video one’s person might send them. The things she would have done with unimatrix guy in the Holodeck would have been the same things she would have/could have/maybe did in some form she’d had done with him in person if given the chance.

Agree with RDM about holodeck protocols regarding depicting ANYONE that is living basically without permission. For example use of ships personnel in a tactical training scenario with the Captain's permission, etc. All quarters should come with a standard complement of furniture. Seven should not have to request some and same with a replicator. The use of the script by RDM in this podcase ep is fantastic. I have mentioned before and again here that I do not know why this was not part of the podcast formula from the beginning. I have understood that between the two of them they probably have the scripts of all the episodes so why are they not being used? Call me OCD or extra or whatever but I would have had those out and been using them every time. If I have to hear "cringe" one more time...gum chewing and an overly dramatic low rating. Come on man. The clear winner Holotay who got to nail Seven. Vid kept stopping at Lisa Klink's name and didn't get to see the after credits skit. I just starting binge watching "Chuck" as I have never seen it but heard it mentioned many times on this pod cast. I note that RDM was a Producer and directed many episodes. I have also noted many extreme and gratuitous shots of the lead female actor and other female guest stars in underwear shots and other poses in their underwear showing off "crotch shots". So why the all the cringy and woke comments now when clearly it was ok back on Chuck?

Seven of Nine was not the first character who did some holoprogram messing around with holograms of the collegues. In the TNG episode "Hollow Pursuits" Rer Barclay creates a fantasy with nearly all the bridge crew in which he is the most desired man and such. Made me cringe as well when I watched it, so I totally agree with Robbie on this.

What's interesting, and deeply ironic to me about this episode is how it and Seven's whatever-it-was with Chakotay scan as an unintended look at compulsive heterosexuality. Comphet isn't usually so *outwardly* stilted and wooden, mind, but the sense of forcing yourself to be into someone because it's *expected* of you is right there in the episode. When you add in that Seven is basically Autism.txt, there's an additional layer of struggling to learn how to mask (sigh), so it makes for an interesting (if, again, obviously unintentional) commentary on the character's stilted journey through romance. And honestly I think it falls in line with the 'forced' aspects Garrett kept bringing up re: Braga being really into Jeri Ryan. Anyway let this be a lesson: comphet doesn't just ruin people and relationships: it also ruins episodes of television!

Agree about the cringing. Seven has more chemistry with the Doctor than she has with Chakotay. I thought Chakotay's behavior was supposed to make us think he was attracted to her too. It just doesn't work.

The start definitely ended too sudden. It would have made more sense if they would have kept filming to show her whole face to highlight that all facial implants are gone - maybe that was supposed to be the reveal.

(Meridian) I wonder why, since that episode aired in 1994 (or 2371) and this episode aired 7 years later (2378) that the StarTrek policy people didn't make a Federation Law about using another person's likeness for nefarious harlequin romance novel fantasies.

OMG so did I. A friend of mine pointed out his reaction on Twitter so I just HAD to come and watch this one. I was DYING of laughter at Robbie's face because he represents all of us J/C fans that felt duped because of this episode. This episode also made me inwardly cringe as it was gross. No offense to Jeri Ryan or Robert Beltran though-both great in the acting department-but this episode was just meaningless and awful on so many levels. LOL!

I completely disagree that 7 should have done the holodeck with each senior staff member. That would have been equally gross. She should have just made a holo-character of a nobody.

Threshold is bad because of its contradictory science notion in Trek if you go faster than warp 10 you end up devolving! This is despite in all pass trek episodes when this occurs this doesn’t happen in the slightest. This episode is bad because of the repeated daft out of the blue couplings that Trek does sometimes. It happened with Worf and Troi especially.

This episode was a serious depiction on PTSD and how trauma/abuse sufferers struggle to attempt normalcy in their lives. Seven wants to reach out and connect with her friends but can't breach that barrier, and she feels that she has to maintain a front; a lot of her character we've seen has been that projected front. The end is a tragedy because we realize that she physically cannot get past her abuser. I think that summarizing this ep as simply "Ick she's masturbating to her friend, that's cringy" really does disservice to the tragedy of the situation and what the character is going through. I know people don't like the pairing but I think it's better to look past that! 😊

Many points have come up because of this. 1. You might not like the subplot of endgame. 2. All your points about the holodeck get brought up in author author and 3. More of a fun fact, originally 7 of 9 was supposed to die in endgame and this episode was setting that up with the ending. Obviously that didn't happen but probably interesting to know going into endgame.

in Janeway's defence of "micro managing" Tom she did only recruit him as an observer while pursing the Marquis, they didn't anticipate the Caretaker's array pulling them into the delta quadrant or losing a quarter of their crew, including head helmsman until Tom grabbed the controls and got the ship to safety. Maybe the saga depicted in "28 days" still weighs on her mind.

Paramount+ synopsis is "Seven's attempt to explore her human side distracts her from her duties and puts voyager at risk" (the video thumbnail is of Seven in her purple outfit, taking a holo-picture of the crew.), which is different again from the Delta Flyer synopsis above "Human Error: Seven of Nine creates a holodeck fantasy where she can mingle with her colleagues, but she ends up falling in love with a senior crew member.". I would explain the lack of borg implants, and wearing the teal uniform as her fantasy on the holodeck - she is effectively playing real (human) self, Anika Hansen.

If her romantic interest had been some generic hologram or perhaps her trying to re-create her lover boy from Unimatrix Zero, people wouldn't have cared. I don't like the pairing and it's there for off screen reasons, but Seven would also conceivably be that tone deaf. Seven isn't hiding it because she thinks she's doing something wrong, but because she's doing something that goes against who she has been up to this point, and it is embarrassing in that sense. It's a personal thing as she becomes more human and wishes to become human completely. She's past marching up to Kim and asking if he wishes to copulate. At this point Braga wanted Seven to die to get Voyager home, so this whole thing with the fantasy and the implant was an exercise in the tragedy of Seven being caught between two worlds not able to fully transition. To play up the tragedy of her character as a whole and her sacrifice.

This episode out of all Voyager or Star Trek period hits me straight into my 15 year old closeted heart, from when I first watched it to now. I relate so deeply to Seven not feeling as though she can be her authentic self, trying to understand feelings and romantic emotions, wanting to connect but not knowing how or being afraid of rejection and taking the walls down. As a girl who was in the closet my entire life until the last 4 years, and also was undiagnosed ADHD my entire life, I shared so many of Sevens struggles that are reflected in this episode and it is so beautifully acted by Jeri Ryan. It makes me cry every time but has also been healing over the years. Saying all that, I love watching my Robbie and Garrett every week, but if the guys hate it and rag on it this whole podcast, I just can't watch. I'm too emotionally invested. I get annoyed at times when it's episodes I love that get hated on, but this one would just hurt! Can someone tell me if they hate on it really bad, or is it safe to watch?

The reason Threshold gets such a bad rap compared to this episode is how memorable it is. This episode I was drawing a complete blank on what it was about until about halfway through the baby shower scene.
