Such an amazing podcast episode. Love the chemistry between Robbie, Garrett, and Robert. I really appreciate their in depth dive on every podcast. I will say the fan score of this episode is spot on. Its a very good episode however it does feel more like a Season 2 or 3 story line about The Doctor. I would give this an episode a 8-8.5ish because some of it was a little mean spirited and I feel like Tinker and Tailor handles the imagined fictional portrayal of Voyagers crew a little bit more innocently. Still a standout episode that I enjoyed.

I agree with Bob Picardo that he would have shown more regard for his friends’ concerns. I’ll have to fanwank that it was a blind spot when it came to him trying to champion holographic rights. And it is a good cause. But he was clumsy with setting and character. And even if changed, he is a unique hologram, so some comparison would always be made. With that exception, however, I thought it was an excellent episode. A more fun version of ‘Measure of a Man.’ I REALLY liked Tom asking the Doc how he sees him. In the hallway argument. Old Tom would not risk asking his opinion. Also old Tom was never as bad as the Doc portrayed. ‘Jenkins’ killing a crewman was particularly defamatory. And there was the Old Man (Adm Paris) holding Janeway responsible for ‘letting he Doctor publish that holonovel’ in that initial call. Owen may appreciate Tom more, but he’s still a crusty protocol kind of guy. And he was Judgey McJudgerson at Reg. I’m glad we got to see the beginnings of potential healing between B’Elanna and her Dad. I do wish the advocate had said that more work needs to be done to differentiate types of holograms in order to establish rights. Finally, the Doc used their likenesses! Again with the violation of people’s privacy! THAT needs to be a rule laid down. B’Elanna took the tonsillectomy pretty well but that was her husband’s image macking on a crewman. Just ewwwww again. Note: this episode is not showing up in S7 collection grouping.

Always with the photons...in early episodes they said they had to be carefull until they setup to start making their own...so I'm pretty sure they figured that problem out. Probably expensive to make though

Captain Janeway being turned into the gunslinger Captain Jenkins could have been a reference to Tuvix, who The Doctor refused to separate against Tuvix's will and with Captain Janeway doing it herself.

Picardo's rapier whit completely destroyed RDM who got in a few punches but was not at the level of the master he was facing. Hi-Larious. 3 of 8's hair was NOT strawberry blonde but full on red hair. The montage of EMHs working in the mine including a few using privative picks and shovels. Come on really?! The inmates on the Klingon prison planet Rurapenthe at least had lasers to mine the ore. I think the Federation could do much better than picks and shovels. A ridiculous trope.

???? The reason Kimble isn't in the opening shot was because the show needed the shock reveal of Chakotay and Marseille at the sickbay door. If Paris starts the program and is immediately greeted by Kim in different make-up there is no shock, just confusion for the audience. "Are you the doctor" "Hi Harry, why do you have spots?"

This is one of my favorite Voyager episodes, particularly the question of to what extent a hologram could be an author and have rights. Years ago, I wrote a thesis on human-robot interaction and decided it would be fun to add (mostly) Star Trek quotes at the start of each chapter. I began my thesis with the opening lines, and last year at a convention, I had Robert autograph that page. I really enjoy the fact that Robbie, Garrett, and Robert were pondering over the same questions I have regarding technology when I rewatch this episode every now and then. Definitely interesting to see what AI and other technologies will bring us in the next few decades, for better or worse.

You'd think they'd be a bit smarter and use actual mining robots - not something like Data or the MkI and just use actual mechanical tools that are not going to argue about android or holographic rights.. After all in today's world, a tunnel boring machine making a tunnel for a railway is not gonna complain about working conditions....is it?

How would Kes be portrayed by the EMH in the holo-story. after all, she's the one that suggests he think of a name for himself, and basically to live "outside the box" and expand his programming. I think the early Kes - the S1 or S2 Kes would be more or less the same. Just like Seven the EMH had respect for Kes and she always treated him well as she saw past the photons and saw the .... man within.

I haven't listened to them all yet, but this has to be one of the best eps of the whole pod (up there with Bride of Chaotica). Garrett and Robbie are always great of course (the Workforce installments were outstanding to take one recent example), but adding Bob for the whole shebang was genius. That man is hilarious. Fantastic banter between him and Robbie the whole time; now I get why the scenes with the Doctor and Paris were always so lifelike and funny. Garrett, I was laughing right there with you. Well done, all.

I actually own a copy of The Hologram Handbook. It was pretty new at the time. I bought at a convention with Robert Picardo and Garrett Wang in Kansas City shortly after Voyager got off air but before Enterprise and September 11th happened.

I love the first part of the episode but the second half is just a bit too much of a TNG “Measure of a Man” ripoff (and not done as well). The back and forth comedy with the doc and Paris especially is hilarious. I loved seeing B’Elanna reconnect with her father and wish there had been more of that carry over from previous episodes in the show. I think what drives me bonkers about the courtroom drama (aside from it being nowhere near as good as TNG) is Janeway going all in on “the doctor is a person” when she has repeatedly held the position that he’s not (and learned that lesson over and over and over but never remembers she learned it from episode to episode because of writing inconsistencies). Same with Picardo’s comments that this episode would have fit in more in season 3ish Doctor, not season 7. If there had been better character consistency in the writing up till this point it probably wouldn’t bother me but I feel like I’ve seen this “the doctor isn’t a real boy” attitude out of Janeway, the doc has to prove it, Janeway has an abrupt turnaround and acts like it was her idea all along thing waaaay too many times. Loved the podcast and having Picardo join the guys. Must have been a fun set with all that ribbing.

when it comes to the photon torpedo thing, I always just assumed starships have replicator technology that can produce more ship parts or ammunition. I just assumed it takes significant amount of energy and other resources so they made as many as they can hold at any given time and replinished only when they needed to. Even if they couldn't replicate whole torpedoes, they probably could have replicated parts to build more torpedoes. and of course it took significant time to construct so it wasn't like they could just instantly produce some any time they wanted. I mean the rest of the enlisted crew need something to do on the down time that we don't see on screen.

This is probably going to be super unrelatable, but I always saw the mobile emitter as similar to my wheelchair. Like it gave him freedom. But in this episode he said the emitter was a heavy burden because it made him unequal to the rest of the crew. Which I guess that’s true, but it also changed his life for the better so he could experience things he’d never be able to without it. Sort of like how people refer us to “confined to a wheelchair” when really our wheelchairs are what lets us see the world.
