I was reminded about a later ep where we learned that Opaca had sacrificed her own son (at a rebel camp) to save many other Bajorans in the vicinity. This could have played into why she felt the longing for this new path.

Well technically, the Prophets ARE Prophets. They live outside of linear time. They see what can happen to Bajor and through the Tears of the Prophet have guided the planet. So, they actually exist. I’m not sure Bajor believe the Prophets created anything (as the Abrahmic … Jewish, Islam, Christian… believe God created the universe). So their faith in the Prophets is more about guidance to a good life. And the Prophets actually could advise if they choose to. I’m not sure what the Bajoran ‘afterlife’ beliefs are. So maybe the Kai didn’t EXPECT to see anything. Bottom line: Bajor’s beliefs in the Prophets has more concrete evidence than many. And Kai Opaka believes she followed their guidance right to the next step in her ‘life.’ Why would she lose faith?

I LOVE this episode. It’s such a condemnation of unexamined violence. The hate that can consume without purpose. And the Kai is so perfect in the episode. I was too late to vote but I’d give it an 8.5. On the technobabble of finding a magnetic differential in the hysteresis curve - not bad logic … although the odds astronomically small given the relative size of the craft. But if they can find warp eddies, perhaps their sensors are very sensitive. [nerd factor 9.7 on this comment] I assume they come back to establish communication and supplies to the former Kai.

I've always viewed this episode as the beginning of an amazing character arc for Kira in the latter half of this season. Every other character except Quark and O'Brien were still finding their footing at this point (imo) but Kira has SUCH a strong arc from Battle Lines, Progress, Duet and In the Hands of the Prophets that I'm always a little blown away that this is only the first season! This might not be one of the best episodes of the season overall, but it is certainly a fantastic and important episode for Kira and her journey as a character (and person!)

Bob Picardo’s doctor did fix the ship. In the episode where he becomes a command hologram and everyone is taken to the work colony. And I think in another episode also but can’t remember. Don’t badmouth the Doctor 😝.

I was like, eh, if it's been just long enough for rigor mortis to start settling in (2+ hours), it would get the small muscles (like the wrists to hands and fingers) before the hip joint/femur to lower abdominal muscles, so they could have still lifted his legs to drag him while his hands were already stiffened. But...yeah, while entirely explainable by it being a few hours since the attack/time of death, and even consistent, it was obviously just protecting the living guy's hands. 😂 But thanks for that mental sidetrip, Robbie! 😐🥴

According to IMDB (so I don't know how reliable this is), Rick Berman didn't approve of Paul Lynch asking Dennis Madalone to direct the action sequences and that was the reason this was Paul Lynch's last episode of DS9.

I don't know why a commander telling his staff/ subordinates what time to expect him back when leaving his unit/station is such a big deal. This happens in every office, military unit, family, house around the world. It is a common occurrence in life to tell people when you will be back. I don't see why it became such a big joke in this pod cast. Kira does not look at Bashir in any type of way showing annoyance, she just looks at him. We don't have to create drama in the show where there is none. I don't understand why Opaca does not lose her faith after dying and not finding any Prophets on the other side. Similar to Neelix losing his faith after dying and then being raised from the dead by nanites. There should have been something addressed about it. I further do not understand how a whole planet of people continues to believe in their religion after finding out that the "Prophets" are not really gods but just another type of life form in the galaxy. Star Trek is rife with example of cultures thinking that other life forms are gods which is dispelled by whoever the Starfleet hero of the day is. Opaca clearly indicates in the runabout that she was given some sort of prophesy. We dont need a scene showing her getting one. Yall are inaccurate about who says the hysteresis curve. O'Brien says it first, then Dax says it, then the computer says it. The whole premis of the story is whack. The Enis leader states that they dont care anymore about trying to post guards or to use any strategy because it does not matter. So why go to the effort to attack when they know it does not matter. To Garrett's point, they must all be insane after all this time not being able to die and suffering constantly. That is the only explanation.

"Battle Lines" was an incredibly perceptive episode focusing on Major Kira's character. In the first couple of seasons of DS9, all I wanted to do was to lock horns with Major Kira. This episode however, was the first one where I actually started to feel sympathy for her. Here, we get to see Major Kira - a character who is almost always on "attack mode" - overcome with shock and grief over Opaka's death and is forced to realize the violence and anger she has held onto. Major Kira had to be tough during the Cardassian Occupation and now that Bajor is free, she has to learn and relearn to stop fighting everyone. The scene where Kira admits that she "knew nothing but violence since (she) was a child" and that she is ashamed of herself was very impactful for me, for it made me realize that she was vulnerable and had a soul. I thought Opaka was a wonderful wise character and wanted to see more of her.

I think all the occupants EXCEPT Opaka were dead upon crashing hence no injuries. They are revived and get the barely alive Opaka out and that is when Kira injures herself again.

This is one my higher-rated S1 eps and I thought (like the gang) that it generated some terrific discussion. Nice job, everyone! BTW this easily could have been a TOS episode. Nice spot by Jason with the similar themes to two of the original series shows. 👌 And sorry to be a broken record but Terry's enthusiasm is outstanding. The segments about protection and the penal colony - hilarious!! Garrett, your emotional investment is wonderful. Great job, all.
