This was your basic high-concept sci-fi episode, where the concept was ‘what if imagination became reality.’ So the plot hole that needed filling was how did the aliens create this environment. Because clearly the altered reality came and went with them. My personal plot-onium: When the three aliens traveled, they traveled with a ship that caused Dax’s initial anomaly readings AND also generated a ‘variable reality’ field. This is like the reality stone in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. What was believed to be reality by the subjects under study BECAME reality (with an assumed failsafe that ultimately would protect the aliens). Buc said human imagination was stronger than they’d ever experienced before. Which is why things got so out of hand. Once Sisko told everyone to ignore the altered reality, no NEW changes existed. But, for example, if a dish had broke before, it was still broken once the variable reality field was removed. Thus if Molly and Keiko were transported to ops with the field in effect, they were still there when it was removed. The variable reality field was removed by the aliens when they realized Sisko and company were no longer going to participate. The experiment was over. But the aliens could still project themselves as they wished. Simple. Now, as a long-time sci-fi fan, I can chalk this all up to ‘the aliens and their ship did this’ and ignore the any plot holes. But if you are not used to that much suspension of disbelief, it’s a harder sell. The old Internet meme of this was ‘a wizard did it.’ Same concept. These aliens were exotic enough that we had no usual rules and thus could be put in the ‘wizard’ category.

They mentioned the station & where everything was, so I had to look it up. The 'core' of the station is where Ops is, the Promenade & the living quarters or the habitat ring.

And have likely been together fewer years than Paris and Torres had, or at most an equal amount of time, given they were married in 1991/during TNG season four. (And given Keiko's super-mature wedding day behavior, thank you tv relationship writing of the era, I'm doubting they'd been together for years and years beforehand. 😬) Molly's age was just accelerated a bit between her birth in fall of 1991 (TNG 5x05) and DS9's pilot (January 1993), so despite the series' overlapping, it looks like they've been married longer than they have.

To answer your question about the layout of the station: The legs are indeed the pylons. The outer ring around the middle is called the Docking ring. The runabouts are stored here, the cargo bays are here etc. The next ring working in to the center is called the Habitat Ring. This is where all the crew and guest quarters are. The area in the middle of the station has Ops at the top, and underneath it is the Promenade.

I'm with Terry on this one - this episode is just a fun ride and I always enjoy it on a rewatch. As much as I like serious stories and emotional character driven episodes with depth, the occasional bit of silliness is what makes Trek great too -and DS9 especially, I feel like the moniker of 'the darker Trek' doesn't really do justice to the fact that it was often the most comedic Trek! I also really liked the reveal that these aliens were exploring the galaxy in their own way. But I do agree that giving us a bit more insight into that or who they were would have made it a stronger episode. The "maybe next year" also implies they could come back, but as Robbie guessed we never see them again lol

Agreed. The concept isn't hard to figure out if you're paying attention. They would disappear because there were only a few aliens. One that was being the birds would become Quark's women, so the birds would disappear and the women would appear. It's not that tough to get. And they were both imagination and real because the aliens were taking something from someone's imagination and manifesting it in reality. I feel like Robbie misses something important now and then and blames the writers for it. It's not the first time.

My understanding of this episode was that the "figments" came and went under the rules set by the visiting aliens. They were doing it to test the station inhabitants to find out how they react to different situations. I don't think the aliens necessarily intended to always make logical sense when doing so.

This episode is not hard to understand at all. The aliens have the capability to see the crew's imaginations or fantasies and then make them into reality sometimes using themselves as fodder. The aliens then observe the responses of the person who had the fantasy and that is how they get to know the races they encounter. Sometimes the things they make real (like the fire and the anomaly) are created out of thin air. These things that the aliens make can come and go as they please like when Sexy Dax disappears after Julian says he does not have time for her. They realize no more information from him will be coming so she vanishes. When these fantasies become real, they can be read by the sensors on the station because they are now real. The anomaly is not just a fantasy projection, it is real and can be measured. As noted, the only change is when Keiko and Molly are made to appear in ops. If the aliens can create real things out of thin air, then I would assume that they have the power to make real things that already existed move around like Keiko and Molly. The aliens could have made fakes of them to trigger Miles but didn't. In the long run it does not matter. The so called "rules" of this episode were NOT changed for the story and it was not hard to understand. 10,000 cool points to Terry for finally say enough to the complaining. The outside ring is the docking ring and the pylons are the docking pylons. You can see various ships "docked" at the pylons including the Enterprise in the pilot episode. You can also see many ships docked with the ring in many episodes. This is also where the Runabout ships are kept. The inner ring is the habitat ring and that is where people live. No one lives in the docking ring and pylons but many people work there, and they were the ones being evacuated. I think calling the use of a leprechaun "a racist trope" is a bit much but it is however, a bit too on the nose. The use of Rumpelstiltskin is a better fit anyway because the whole story of Rumpelstiltskin is him trying to steal a child.

Another great show, delta flyers. Terry's performances are definitely the best part of the episode for me. Though I do after with Robbie that the rules are inconsistent and didn't really make sense. It's a testament to how good the DS9 cast is, especially Terry, that this episode was still fun to watch despite the issues with the story.

I really always enjoy this one. I get some of your points. But I feel like these aliens can access imagination and simultaneously experience that and be themselves. Almost mixed yet separate. I felt stuff changed and disappeared was because they only had so much energy and the could only manifest as long as people weren’t actively shutting out those ideas. You guys should get a DS9 blueprint!

"If Wishes were Horses" was a very wild and hilarious thrill ride of an episode about imaginations running amok. My favorite scenes were Odo corralling the dungee jackdaws (played by emus), Quark's dream women and when Odo discovers that he does have an imagination after imagining Quark in a holding cell. I also love the ending scene between Captain Sisko and Buck Bokai; it was a very poignant ending scene with foreshadowing of the baseball that always shows up on Sisko's desk later on in the series.
