I'm surprised that the TOS classic "Let That Be Your Last Battlefield" wasn't brought up by that question asker - for me the biggest reason why I didn't enjoy this episode as much as I could have is because it feels like a retread of the themes from that episode but just not done as well. Also, a thought that occurred to me back when the DS9 podcast was announced but that I was reminded of from this episode, is that Robbie is either going to have to readjust his position on good episodes showing off all the characters or else have that disappointment for a number of DS9's best episodes. Unlike other Star Trek shows of the era, DS9 tended more towards having individual episodes doing a deep dive on one or a few characters and then cycling through to focusing on other characters in other episodes.

This was a tough episode for me because I really loved Kai Opaka. IMO she was the perfect person to lead Bajor after the Occupation. Although, we would not have eventually gotten the wiles of Kai Winn.

Even though "Battle Lines" is a relatively average episode that would have worked on any Star Trek series, it's long been my go-to example of how DS9 was different among its contemporaries. The station's location in Bajoran space meant that while the show's political science fiction still worked as metaphor and allegory, which is why "Battle Lines" wouldn't have been out of place on TNG/VOY/ENT, it also had more permanent implications on in-universe 'history.' This allowed the politics plays out more, like, well, politics. Voyager eventually left Kazon space, and it never went back to Ocampa. We didn't usually see the lasting impact of anything Voyager did. The writers could have told those stories, and did from time to time such as with Arturis in "Hope and Fear," but it would have been comical if the entire Delta quadrant had followed Voyager around like a conga line. And like Robert says, Voyager's writers' didn't usually connect episodes like that. DS9 wasn't necessarily about moving on, it was often about dealing with it, and its best episodes reflected this. Now DS9 wasn't fully serialized, and most characters weren't given the opportunity to change over time. And Opaka herself was, as Garrett points out, killed off for being the most expendable recurring character. But because the setting was fixed, she couldn't go easily; the setting eventually had to account for her departure; who replaced Opaka as Kai had dramatic implications. This wasn't the case with every DS9 episode, but it happened enough to enrich the setting over time.
