On the population of the station, back in captive pursuit we are told 300. In season 2 episode sanctuary, this has risen to 2000, whilst 7000 is given as the stations maximum capacity.

I think it might have been fun to watch the whole threesome together? Loved them of course, but I did agree with Armin that the drama was a little off at the end because so few attacking soldiers! That said… here’s my point, Armin said not much of the “Private Ryan” in it? But if any Star Trek felt like watching something like that I would never watch it! I want some fun really…. A little tension ok, but actively not looking for “gritty”!

That's what I thought too! They disobeyed orders to stay, so of course they aren't going to be wearing their uniforms as they continue to act without Starfleet's approval.

Thank you for pointing out the importance of the Kira/Dax scenes. I think this is the first time they’ve been paired in an action sequence like this? Which means it’s the first time two women from the main cast on any Star Trek show have ever had a scene like this. As a young adult watching DS9, the depiction of the female characters & the massive leap forward from TNG felt groundbreaking to me. (To be fair to TNG if Tasha had survived it could have been different.) From a Voyager perspective it probably doesn’t seem such a big deal, but it was huge for me at the time.

I always thought they wore the civilian clothes because they were disobeying orders. So if they stayed on the station, it was an outward sign that they were acting alone.

Yeah they seem to ignore O’Briens rich backstory established on TNG that clearly informs his depiction on DS9.

I thought the same about the civilian clothes but I think it was probably to subtly tip the audience off to the holodeck rouse used later on (where they show up suddenly in uniform again). Completely unnecessary bc of how it was eventually shot but that’s my theory.

I find it amazing how negative Armin is about this episode arc. Why do we need Bariel? Really? Because he’s integral to the story moving forward. And this three-parter sets up the rest of the series beautifully. Armin should know not to look at these things individually that this is of a 7 year piece.

Hearty agree with Robbie, Armin and Garrett that there was a lot in this episode that shattered the suspension of disbelief. This three-episode arc, though, has some elements/moments that feel essential to the characters and are my favorites for the whole series. One is the scene between Jake and Nog as they're departing on different ships, where Nog names how special their relationship is and how they've overcome a lot (including opposition from the adults in their families) to be friends. One way to watch DS9, from the very beginning, is as a classic show about new neighbors who seem like they aren't going to get along, experiencing each other as "odd," coming together in unlikely ways, and revealing the prejudices of the adult generation (and relative openness of the kids.) Following the Sisko family and the Quark/Rom/Nog family all the way through, it really fits into this archetype of a show (within the other arcs and themes of the rest of the show.) This scene is archetypal in that way and essential to that storyline. Another element are all the scenes featuring Kira and Dax together, and the way these scenes move their relationship forward and do something that doesn't often happen in sci fi, or anywhere on TV: show two women characters as friends and colleagues in action sequences, bantering, and being heroic and amazing for an extended period of time. I think Nana Visitor's acting choices were perfect: she was like Han Solo in those scenes, and I enjoyed seeing her confident and competent rather than afraid. The banter between the two was like Star Wars IV-VI, as well; really well-written, really well done by the actors. As Armin noted, this is definitely part of when the writers are starting to figure out that Terry is very funny and fun, and Dax should be, too, so it's an important episode for her character. Even though is overall kind of an anti-climactic way to start a new season, these 3 episodes still show DS9 laying groundwork for amazing things to come, and the solid performances by both series regulars and guest stars help it out a lot, too.

I love Robbie's interpretation of Morn pumping his fist behind Li's big speech. I notice Morn every time in that scene, but I always saw it as Morn not waiting for Li's speech to end before he tries that "excuse me... if I could just... slip right by you..." move. An awkward attempt to extricate himself from this scene of heroic oratory, as politely as possible. Maybe that Morn face is a bit of an ink blot. We all see something different. :)

Armin is right about Starfleet characters (and Kira) being Too Heroic. It's just rare that Starfleet characters, particularly cast regulars, get to be anything else. The exceptions, quite a few of which are in this series, tend to be in great episodes.
