Quick thought on the stabbing at the end: in light of all the discussion about PTSD, I wonder whether the drunk Bajoran used to be a freedom fighter himself as PTSD often manifests in addictions such as alcoholism - that would both give greater motivation for his hateful killing of Maritza in contrast to Kira as well as explain how he knew precisely where to stab a Cardassian to kill him instantly.

My wife and I met Nana and got a picture with her at Star Trek Las Vegas last year and she was so real and caring. The person in front of us lost a lot of weight and Nana recognized her and looked them in the eye and said “that was all you” and congratulated them. Then my wife gave her a friendship bracelet and she wore it all day including during the DS9 panel. We were waiting for Nana to join the podcast and it did not disappoint. Nana is just the best.

I originally saw this episode at 2 or 3 years old and did not comprehend the significance of this episode or what was being discussed because it was a heavy dialogue driven episode and as a kid this is an episode I did not really enjoy much because it was not action driven but dialogue driven. I can tell you I did not find this episode traumatizing due to not understanding what bad things had happened.

I chuckled a little at the Duet vs Jetrel comment. Robbie you actually HATED that episode during the re-watch, although it was season 1, so you weren’t giving rating yet. Duet the winner for sure! (And your Voyager 10 rating was on another Ethan episode, Mortal Coil).

How great to have Nana on at the same time as Armin. If we could have had Terry it would have been phenomenal. Quibbling over how many stab wounds the guy gets is ridiculous, the point is that he is dead. Additionally, Odo did NOT request the medical file. He only did a search to find out if anyone had requested info on Kira. Odo then went to Bashir as RDM wanted him to and asked Bashir to request the medical files. So one of the big complaints about the ep is unfounded. RDM says that 5 is the average score, not true. 5 is the mid score of a 1 to 10 system. The average score would be far higher than 5 as little to no shows are rated below 5. As I have advocated at least twice before, the 1 to 10 rating system is meaningless. A far better system would be 1 to 5 where: 5 - Fantastic, Top 10% of episodes 4 - Above average, Top 30% of episodes 3 - Average 2 - Below Average, Bottom 30% of episodes 1 - From In living Color's "Men on Star Trek" "Hated it!!!" You could even do a plus or minus (example 4.5) thrown in if needed.

With little doubt, Duet is my favorite episode of Season One foresure, and VERY high on the list for the series as a whole. Nana and Harris' performances really make this episode so meaningful, emotional, and outstanding. It's a hard episode to top.

Great podcast about a great episode! HUGE call-out to Rebecca McNeil for the super editing job. I especially enjoyed the way individuals got "close-ups" when they spoke about important points. Keep up the great job! And PLEASE bring back Nana and invites others to the sandbox! I would especially love to hear from people like Cirroc Lofton, Andrew Robinson, and Max Grodenchik.

True, but I think his 8.9 still puts Duet pretty high among all Trek episodes he has rated. Garrett doesn't usually stretch his range to the extremes. I think he's only gone under 5 a handful of times as well. I'm really tempted to make a spreadsheet.

Going in to phase 2 of the TDF I was really hoping they'd be able to bring certain people in for certain episodes and this was the first on my list and they nailed it. Not holding my breath but still keeping my fingers crossed they can talk Avery Brooks to come in for Far Beyond the Stars.

I'll admit I was nervous coming in to the podcast this week. This episode might only be in season 1 but for me it's in the Top 5 of the entire show, so I hoped (but wasn't sure if) Robbie and Garrett would appreciate it for the masterpiece that it is. But clearly I had no reason to worry! Because boy did this episode absolutely deliver!! You delved into every single aspect in such detail, from the wonderful writing, to the masterful acting, and even insights into James Conway's directing, as well as the importance of the themes and context that makes this episode so impactful AND with the incredible Nana Visitor joining you as well. It was an absolute thrill to listen to you all! My only shock was that no one scored it 10/10 (and that Robbie forgot how much he disliked Jetrel, hope someone reminds him and he tells Nana that Duet absolutely wins hahaha)

I have considered it unfair when we label actors as dramatic or over emotional in “real life”; their career requires that they access their emotions at a moments notice. They’re not robots that can switch that off the moment they’re off the set.

Now that you've mentioned it, I was very surprised that neither Robbie, Garrett, Armin and Nana didn't mention Robert Shaw's "The Man in the Glass Booth" and Leonard Nimoy portraying the central character in Robert Shaw's play. That fun fact would've made a very fascinating part of the discussion!

It's interesting to hear the comments near the end about children asking questions. I was... 6? when this originally aired, and definitely watched it. I also had an awareness of the Holocaust from a young age through war movies and documentaries on tv. I understood as I got older and the show continued the metaphors between the Cardassian Occupation and the Holocaust. I think shows like Star Trek were designed to be family friendly and spark important conversations. There is a lot of importance to understanding genocide.

Robbie didn't give Jetrel a 10. The Neelix episode he actually gave a 10 was "Mortal Coil" where Neelix dies and is brought back to life. Neelix begins to question his faith as he failed to experience an afterlife while "dead".

Duet probably felt like a play because it is based on a play called "The Man in the Glass Booth" by Robert Shaw. One really fun fact is that Leonard Nimoy played the character on whom Marritza is based in that play.

A great episode of the series and the podcast. However, one correction.... Robbie didn't even come close to giving Jetrel a ten! In fact, it was one of his least favourite episodes of the first season and he was critical of the writing and particularly the direction. #JusticeForRobbie

The parallels that Star Trek delves into with the horror of concentration camps in WW2 is amazing. Their was an actual German accountant in Auschwitz that was documented in a film called "The Accountant of Auschwitz" that is explained in the United Nations website https://unric.org/en/the-accountant-of-auschwitz/ Very fascinating and horrific.

With the original Delta Flyers, you gave us a worthy companion piece to Voyager, and everyone involved with Journey Through The Wormhole is doing a great job building it into a worthy companion to DS9. Nana's talking about total character immersion reminds me of Heath Ledger. It was said he was very much immersing himself into the character and that it drove him to his eventual death. And she even talks about how it traumatizes the actors to do that.

This is it. This is the episode where DS9 arrives and starts to become the show that it would end up being, incidentally my favorite Star Trek series to date. It's everything that makes Star Trek great; take a contemporary issue and explore it in 24th century terms so that you can go places that no man has gone before. It's also everything that makes DS9 great; deep character exploration and a darker tone that the other Star Trek series rarely are able to get into. It's the first of several 10/10 episodes of the series for me and I'm really glad we got to hear Nana's perspective on it.

I absolutely loved this podcast! I thought including Nana Visitor in tonight's podcast was perfect! “Duet” really made me see the many emotional facets of Major Kira, a character I wanted to be frienemies with, and got to really see what really drives her which is the desire for justice for the oppression her people endured. I had watched “Duet” only once, and I still remember most of the scenes by heart - it was that impactful. I felt that Major Kira had the best lines in this episode (“Nothing justifies genocide” being one of my favorite lines in the DS9 series.) I also loved listening to Nana Visitor talk about how emotionally exploratory her role was and that in this episode, her role as Major Kira introduced her to the acting concept of portraying a lead character who learns she is wrong about someone. While listening to the scene Kira's monologue about the dark and horrifying legacy of the Gallitep labor camp, I was shocked to realize that the brutality Kira was describing was exactly reminiscent to what happened in the Holocaust concentration camps. One can imagine the shocking and tragic picture Kira painted with her words and hear the powerful depth of pain in her voice and soul. I remembered Armin Shimerman mention having lost some of his relatives to the Holocaust during an interview on "The Shuttlepod Show" and upon hearing him tell his family's history again, I could, in a way, feel and understand the distant but ever-present pain of losing people you have never really met. I felt and continue to feel a great sense of sadness and respect for those who have had loved ones who either survived or died in this horrifying tragedy during WWII. I though Harris Yulin's portrayal as Marritza was dynamic and incredible. You see Marritza pretending to be Gul Dharhe'el, "The Butcher of Gallitep" and then you see him sobbing as he remembers the horrifying events that took place in Gallitep - and it was there you get to see who Marritza really was - a man who is haunted by guilt over his cowardice and wants to sets things right for everyone; and that not all Cardassians were cold-hearted torturers and murderers - there were some Cardassians who didn't approve the Cardassian occupation of Bajor, but couldn't speak up for fear of being caught and killed. The ending still shocks and impacts me to this day as Kira confirms to herself and others that hating a Cardassian because he is a Cardassian is never a reason enough. I remember the only other mention of Gallitep in “Star Trek” was in the DS9 Novel, “The 34th Rule” by David R. George and Armin Shimerman (though it was mostly, if entirely written by David R. George). For those who haven’t read “The 34th Rule”, Quark and his brother Rom were subjected to emotional, verbal (and eventually physical harassment) after a dispute between Bjaor and Ferenginar goes sour and they (along with other Ferengi) are arrested and sent to Gallitep under the control of a sadistic and insane Bajoran Colonel. It’s an extremely intense book that’s not for the faint of heart, but it’s a great read full of important social themes and has a real cinematic feel to it. The long and short of it, "Duet" was one of the best DS9 episodes I have ever seen and it continues to haunt and fascinate me to this day. A "9.7" rating for me, at that.
