Ar 1:46:55 Garrett Wang talks about a Japanese scientist Michiu Kaku, who "took different vials of water" and taped different words on then (Murder, Love, etc). He says the water had certain chemical changes Just based on the words, picking up the mental energy from the words? Is this true? When? Where? Sounds a little like a Star Trek plot.

Yeah I'm just listening to this podcast now and Garrett Wang is right. Kira mentions the risk of of a Bajoran civil war in her first exchange with Sisko in the pilot; Picard also references something to that effect, among other examples. It's the reason Sisko seeks out Opaka.

I was surprised by the non-credited Frank Langella. Mr. Shimerman mentioned he didn't know the whole reasoning to it, but in the Star Trek Deep Space 9 Companion, it states, Langella’s uncredited appearance was apparently a matter of the actor’s own volition. “He wanted to do the show, says Kolbe. “He did it for his children, because they loved the show. It was not done for money or exposure.”

Fun fact, according to Memory Alpha, "When the story was brought over to DS9, Ira Steven Behr altered the leader figure from a reluctant hero to a mistaken one. He did this based upon the 1962 John Ford movie The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, which deals with the notion that a legend can be more important than the facts upon which it is based."

If you think about this episode in the context of when it aired, the cliffhanger at the end hits much harder. Given that it's the first episode of a new season, it's very believable that there might be changes to the cast, so one might think they are writing Kira out in the first few episodes of the season. And without the internet as it exists today, it was much easier to surprise audiences with casting changes back then. Many people could have had legitimate doubts about whether or not Nana Visitor might actually be leaving the show.

When Cmdr Sisko was talking with Li Nalas in his office towards the end of the episode, I was reminded of the famous quote from the classic 1962 film "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance". "When the legend becomes fact, print the legend." That theme is the same as in this episode.

Rob’s comment in passing about John Fleck being part of the NEA Four (which I had never heard of) led me down a research hole. John uploaded excerpts of the performance in question, and of the protest thereafter to his YouTube channel. It was wonderful to be introduced to history through a Star Trek podcast. I agree with you. The emphasis put on these ridiculous minuscule details is maddening. DS9 is, always was, and always will be a phenomenal show, warts and all! Just ENJOY it!

Accents again? It is more natural, surely, that people pronounce Bajor completely differently. In the UK the City of Newcastle is produced completely differently different people…

Yeah I think O'Brien going along on the Cardassian infiltration mission is a "duh" for anyone who watched TNG, and more of a "huh" for people who didn't (or don't remember).

Infighting post-revolution/independence is very common. People have different ideas of what they had been fighting for and what they want their new country (or planet) to be. They just risked everything to achieve it and, from their perspective, people who disagree with them are threatening to throw away everything they fought for. In the US we had the Shays Rebellion and Whiskey Rebellion, and the Federalist and Anti-Federalist factions with incompatible ideas about what the country should be. An even starker example would be how many different ideological groups (Marxists, democrats, constitutional monarchists, Islamists) fought to overthrow the Shah of Iran, before the Islamists eventually took control. During the occupation differences between Bajorans took a back seat to resistance; but with freedom those differences return to prominence, and the struggle for power - both legal and otherwise - begins.

OK, so regarding O’Brien: he’s an extremely resourceful man. He is also a war veteran and knows this type of an operation. He is pretty knowledgeable on how to do an extraction. Because of the political sensitivity, they cannot send commandos in. It has to be this QT type of an operation and you have Kira who is an experienced terrorist and O’Brien who experienced the things like this from the being a veteran of the Cardassian war. And it has to work because of the story guys once again suspend disbelief and enjoy it!

So I’m a little confused here why you guys don’t get that there would be infighting in a world that was occupied for 50 years by oppressors and now has freedom. Of course there’s going to be infighting. People want control, they don’t agree with each other. There’s political parties, there’s religious entities, there’s you’re basic corrupt politicians, and they all think Bajor should be going in different directions for very different reasons. Of course there’s infighting!

Bajoran infighting: In the pilot, it was established that Bajor had a fragile provisional government that could collapse at any time. We had a militant faction that wanted to get rid of the Federation in Past Prologue, and we have the different vedeks.
