I've seen this documentary a few years ago and had forgotten this myself I never meant this weeks Q to spoil anything. I collected the original run of VHS's in the early 90s before the episodes even aired in the UK, and the episode blurbs said 'first of a 3 parter', 'in the second part', so they were revealing this in the shop at the time of purchase! I think it drives up more excitement on how it will leave you wanting more. At the time I was thrilled as longer episodes give a more grandiose story scope and wondered if at the time the cast were being schooled on this as the scripts come out... But appreciate Robbie and Garrett are going in more blindly so will try to be more careful in giving away nuggets that we fans probably looked out for at a time when stuff wasn't easily googleable in 10 seconds flat....

One of the unexpected benefits of this podcast is witnessing the friendship between Garrett and Robbie. I’ve been a Star Trek fan for 30 years and it is heartwarming that the cast members of my favorite shows have become lifelong friends.

Figuring out why Cardassia IV is named thusly is not difficult. The standard naming of planets throughout Star Trek is usually based on the name of the star, in this case Cardassia. If the star has planets then it becomes the Cardassia Star System. The planets are then numbered from the innermost to the outmost. Cardassia I through whatever. The main planet is just called Cardassia or Cardassia Prime. The other planets were colonized by Cardassia Prime. Sometimes though, the other planets in the system have specific names given to them. If not, they just usually go with the numbering system. No one should be surprised that Kira and O'Brien left 4 POWs on the planet as their plan from the start was to leave all of them except for Li Nalas. Right after O'Brien confirms that only 2 at a time could be beamed up (which is crap), Kira says "well there is no guarantee that Li Nalas would be in the first two". This means that if Li had been beamed up in the first two, then they would have left the rest of them there as they got what they came for. Pretty shitty if you ask me. So a runabout transporter cant handle more than 2 at a time? Why was the transporter in the small little shuttle in ST:TNG The Best of Both Worlds capable of beaming Worf, Data and Borg Picard at the same time? A runabout is about 3 or 4 times as big as that small shuttle. When the POWs are escaping, they have to wait until Kira deactivates the forcefield. Why? She already turned it off to let O'Brien in so why was it turned back on?

I think my fav part of this trilogy is that they rescue Nalas in the first ep, they dont drag out the recuse story to make it last all 3 episodes

I made a similar comment about the other 3 on the last episode. I don't recall thinking in any series that any character was played by a bad actor. Quark played by another actor could very well have been a minor character on the show.

Garrett was correct on his history. On a side note: I always felt this 'three part episode' was kind of a test run for the type of serialized storytelling that DS9 would become famous for, especially in its last 2-3 seasons.

I re-watched "The Homecoming" to refresh my memory before this podcast aired. Very cool fact that the actor who portrayed Li Nalis, Richard Beymer was Tony in "West Side Story"! Loved Frank Langella's role as Minister Jarro in this episode! I remembered watching Frank Langella in the films "Cutthroat Island" (where he played Geena Davis's villainous uncle), "Dave" (where he played the White House Chief of Staff) and "The Tale of Despereaux" (where he provided the voice of the Mayor Mouse who exiled Despereaux) - he is one of those great actors that the camera loves, but the camera loves in an evil or foreboding way. He is an incredibly versatile actor. This episode has a lot of strong and cautionary social themes (especially the introduction of the Circle and their xenophobic beliefs). I felt bad for Jake when his girlfriend’s parents turn him away just because he was “non-Bajoran”, but loved the way Captain Sisko comforts Jake. I loved the dialogue in the scene where Li Nalas admits that he is no hero and that he didn’t do anything that deserved his legendary title, and Sisko counters that Bajor needs him, for he is a symbol of strength and honor and that “legends are just as powerful as truth.” An 8.1 rating.

Bajor was in political chaos in the Pilot. A reference to whoever was in charge of the provisional government this week. Sisko went to meet Kai Opaka to see if she would bring stability. So political intrigue on Bajor is not new. Great backstories again. On inspirational leaders - good when they’re ‘good’, but when they are manipulators, it’s very damaging.

Currently in a TNG rewatch as well and Picard on several occasions says that Starfleet is not a military organisation. I appreciate what will come in future seasons but it feels a bit odd Garratt when you mention military organisations. On the topic of 3 parters, Ira Stephen Behr tells us on the documentary, "What we leave behind" That he wanted to do this...

Screenrant wrote an article about Frank Langella being uncredited: Director Winrich Kolbe explained Frank Langella's decision in the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Companion. As Kolbe explained, Frank Langella opted not to be credited for his performance as Jaro Essa because he did the role purely for his kids. Langella's kids were fans of Star Trek, and his role as Jaro Essa was a gift to them. He therefore declined the credit because he saw it as a gift and not an acting job designed to win him money or exposure.
