Actually science built and advanced based on the work of others before them! As long as you cite that earlier research and explain what novel part you contributed, you are all good and sometimes even celebrated for that novel next step! Also, there was a fascinating TNG episode where the planet prohibited building on previous scientists’ work. When a scientist dies, the next one has to start over from beginning (not quite sure what in practice that explicitly means). But it’s very silly idea. Therefore, the visiting scientist had to get his work completed before he died!

I haven’t watched this whole thing yet so apologies if this gets covered, but Jadzia’s character was originally to be an anti gravity character, too. It’s only the high cost of this per episode that made them change her to a Trill. I always wondered how it would’ve worked out so I’m glad they wrote it into this episode, instead.

I love the ferengi stories. A lot of them are ridiculous so I don't blame anyone for not liking them but I think they help to balance out the seriousness of DS9, especially as we get into the later stuff. (Don't want to spoil anything in case Robbie and Garret read these)

While I'm not in a wheelchair, I became permanently disabled for other things and - yes, nobody can know how it feels unless they've been there. it's a terrible place to be. For the past few years I've been trying to advocate for society to actually pay attention to us, and DO something. SSI (for the disabled and elderly) payments are capped at $943 for a single person. So, not only do we have to contend with our health problems all day - every day, we get to look forward to trying to pay rent, buy food, etc. on less than a thousand bucks. I can only afford to eat one meal a day... and that's with foodstamps ($150 a month) Sorry if I came across angry at all. I'm just so frustrated because nobody seems to give a rats butt about the fact that society's most vulnerable people have to live WELL below the Federal Poverty Line, Nobody seems to care, we just get pushed aside - in an out of sight out of mind kind of thing.) I'm not saying we should be living like kings. But it would be nice to actually know what the middle class feels like. Or even just a little above the Fed. Poverty Line. we just want some dignity...

Do not like this episode either. Although I have seen at least five times, the only thing I remember when I see the title is "oh its the one about the mean bitchy alien Starfleet person". Kot is very similar to the Tak Tak from Voyager S3:E12 who RDM mentions but not for this reason. Both species have a ridge that comes over the mouth. Another bad guy with a gun on the station. How did that happen given the security features? I guess Quark did not need to disable security in the last episode because it must be very easy to get guns onto the station. Maybe Odo needs to be fired. Actors not knowing ahead of time about copious skin showing is not ok. However, they had the option of not doing the part. Complaining about sex on ST also happened in the Voyager podcast. I will say the same thing again: the series Chuck that RDM was a producer on shows just as much or more "titillation" than Star Trek. I don't see why that was ok, but this is not. Same thing on Resident Alien where they have a BDSM scene and talk about "ice dildos". Come on man. While giving Melora a checkup after her incident, Bashir tells her that she has "proven that the crew can depend on her". How exactly? Just by showing up? Did she save the station from some dangerous alien during the commercial break that we missed?

Yes but he is operating under Feringi morals for HIS planet. He knows damn well that what may be legal on his planet is not legal anywhere else but does it anyway. Therefore he IS doing something wrong. An American just cant go over to another country and break the law and then say well its not illegal in my country and expect nothing to happen to them.

Robbie mentioned how people don't like the Ferengi stores in this podcast. I have to say that I'm appreciating the Ferengi stories more after listening to this. I always loved when Quark was on, but now when it's a stand alone Ferengi story, I find them more interesting now and I have more of an appreciation for it.

After hearing RDM compare Melora's movements when she fell to a Jane Fonda exercise video, I can't help giggling now when I see that scene. Too funny. And coincidentally, I watched the 37s today, the episode in which Harry Kim has to drag Noonan to safety (also re-listened to the podcast and heard Garrett talking about how difficult it was and how the actor had to help him).

Quark is operating under Forengi morality, he isn’t doing anything wrong. It might not be western morality, but it is consistent and perfectly aligned. It is why the tension with Sisko and Sisko’s assumptions are not wrong, and also why the evolution is so great between all the characters. They are truly different.

I enjoyed the recap more than the actual episode. I think that if she had appeared in another episode after this I would have liked the character more but Terry is right she was too mean for most of the episode and we needed more redeeming characteristics from Melora.

I listened to an interview with the actress recently on Trek Untold channel and the reason this character did not come back was because for it’s time it was expensive to show a character floating around and it was expensive removing the lines she was hanging by.

So re the low gravity scene - Melora isn’t pushed down any harder than anyone by “normal” gravity; it’s that her species’ skeletal system is adapted to a far lower level of gravity, so it’s exponentially more difficult for her to raise her limbs and support/move her body in higher (“normal”) gravity. The level of gravity, whether station default or her low-grav quarters, is acting equally on both Melora and Bashir. It’s that Bashir may have exaggerated/exponentially more forceful movements of his limbs, head, etc in the gravity that’s so much lower than the human body is designed and accustomed to maneuver in. So if the two of them pushed off of the floor in low-gravity with equal effort, Bashir would push off far harder against the low gravity because for his muscles it’s low gravity and for hers it’s normal gravity. But they’d naturally rise up to the same degree.

Without giving away spoilers, I gotta say knowing what I know now of Bashir that comes about later in the series really changes the tone of a lot of these episodes and makes me think less of him in these moments.

One of my favorite Season 2 episodes! Loved the strength and character development of Melora, how her outward abrasiveness hides her insecurities of feeling like a helpless burden and that Bashir's calm honesty coaxes her out of her "walls of defense". My favorite scenes of Melora was when she was ordering food to the Klingon Chef in fluent Klingon, when she introduced Dr. Bashir to zero-gravity flying and the climax of the episode. Fallit Kot was one of the creepiest rivals Quark has ever had and sort of wished we knew what happened to him after he was apprehended in the hopes of him reappearing in a future "missing episode".

Though Garrett and his dirty mind lol 😂 Btw, there is a story arch where that strong Orville character ends up in a wheelchair when she visits her planet because she's getting too used to the new gravity and then can't handle her own planet's gravity any longer. That story arch is quite similar to this DS9 Episode.

For an episode that aired in 1993, I thought it was an excellent allegory for disabled workers. Even today, though much better since ADA is now a building construction precept versus add-on accommodation, there still are barriers. Individuals still feel ‘othered.’ And her planet limited her education and opportunity. I also felt Bashir was very sincere. An acting choice shouldn’t affect the story. He was clearly infatuated and wanted to help. He may have that Frankenstein instinct but I think his motives were pure. Dax was a superstar with laying down some wisdom in the shuttle. Finally, for all the regulars we get just a little more maturation of their character traits. So I would rate this a 7.8. Also, there’s extra bonus points for Bashir’s ‘red alert’ banter to get Melora to lower her walls a bit. I was charmed, which doesn’t always happen. But as always, the podcast was a delight. I love the gushing when deserved. I love how you really explore most scenes and you dig deep when warranted. The BTS about the script was fascinating this time. Also, shout out to excellent questions!

I've always felt that once the transporter was invented, it should essentially be the only device any sickbay or infirmary would need. We know it stores a person's pattern, so any disease, trauma or affliction, you just put the patient in the transporter, program their healthy pattern in, and then materialize them. The film "Elysium" kind of explored this notion. It basically restored people by atomizing and reconstituting them.
