Recall that this episode came out only a few years after the landmark legislation, The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. Placed in this context, it is clear that the episode explored the attitudes that were affecting disabled persons at the time, including their desire not to be treated as inferior, or a burden, or unable to work in certain professions. Further, Melora embraced pride in her characteristics and did not want to change them just to match the mainstream. Melora should be saluted for being true to herself. Also, we should all remember the enormous progress that disabled persons have made and continue to support their equal rights under law.

…pretty sure we did see Kiera, at the end when about to tractor the escaping shuttle! Ps.. I liked Terry channeling Elon musk with the “less than a cup of Starbucks”. I presume she did that deliberately!

Melora was not his patient. They were solving an engineering issue. Terry’s assessment is more on point with Bashir being of higher rank than Melora who is in a vulnerable position due to the gravity issue. As for Bashir’s reactions maybe he just wanted to score?

Thank you for saying this. I found it very frustrating that the episode blames Melora for her attitude. I know she talks a bit about why she’s so defensive, but it would have been a much better episode if the able-bodied characters had come to see things from her POV instead of her having to be shown the error of her ways by Bashir. It must be so frustrating to have people offer their idea of help, when you want to be independent & you actually know what you need if people would just listen. I thought the episode felt very dated, but maybe that’s because I’m now much more aware that there are people who will (for example) grab a person’s wheelchair to “help” without asking & then complain if they get yelled at. There was a viral post on Twitter the other day where a woman was getting vile abuse simply because she said she didn’t want to explain her condition to a random person in a cafe who’d asked what was “wrong” with her. She was treated as if she was the one being rude for not engaging. I struggled to hear Melora being described as “rude” when it felt like we were being given an able-bodied person’s outsider view of a disabled person who dared to stand up for herself & wasn’t grateful enough. The episode did have a chance to say something new about disability by showing Melora’s perspective, but it missed its chance.

Watching this episode I 100% understand Melora in the beginning. I have a disability that I’ve had my whole life Cerebral Palsy. I’ve been able to function rather well in the more abled body world that’s not always made for me. Her attitude reminds me of me. Especially if you’ve never met me because I want people to see me as a functioning person and not my disability. So I probably came at this episode very differently than others, because I have had moments like Melora. Especially when I was younger. As an older person with CP it is different and I do need more help so I’m more likely to ask. But I am a good adapter so I can still do most things myself.

@Robbie - A lot of people dislike TNG Ferengi episodes, but think DS9 Ferengi episodes are MUCH better.

Best part of the episode for me was Ron Taylor as the Klingon chef. I know he'll be back on at least once, but I would have loved to have had him on at least once each season.
