My favourite rule of acquisition is "never have sex with the boss's sister" 😆

After rewatching this episode i am sad the Pel character never came back. I do feel the writers brought back the story themes via Quarks Mother.

Scott Fuller

I doesn’t feel right that we see Kira butt-slapped (sexual assault) and there is no repercussion or accountability for Zek. Perhaps even worse, is that Starfleet sits back and lets it happen. A sign of the times perhaps. It would have distracted from the episode to have to deal with this heaviness, but I’d rather have not seen this scene happen at all. There is a similar frivrolity in an earlier episode where a Dabo girl comes to Sisko for help regarding sexual misconduct.

I too enjoy most of the Ferengi episodes. What I don't enjoy is how Ferengi females are treated, which made this particular episode "not so great" for me. On the other hand, I really appreciate the discussions about it on the podcast! Y'all provide different perspectives that make me think about things I might have missed.

In terms of Ferengi episodes, I think the problem some people have is finding them a little too farcical, in the classical sense of a "farce". Personally I like most Ferengi episodes but sometimes I feel like that element does go a bit too far.

ChrisB

No, I think they should be given all the credit. The writers are brilliant and within the ethos of Star Trek to point up our failings as a society. They did this purposely to show what it is like when you have bias and prejudice. That comes from fear, and it also comes from not being present in the moment and seeing who or what is in front of you.

Do you think the writes were really trying show the hate Sisko had for Ferengi? Or were they thinking the viewers would just assume the Ferengi where going to cheat and lie and they would just be on his side and not think twice. Especially in the early 90s. I am just wondering if they are getting to much credit when it comes to season 2 of the Ferengi? Just a thought.

The Ferengi control over women didn't remind me of restrictions on reading the Torah specifically, but more generally of those imposed historically by all three Abrahamic religions, and some other religions too.

Ours as well! My wife and I both love a Ferengi episode. They are always fun, and they are often thought provoking. The performers all do a wonderful job making the Ferengi "real," lovable, and unique.

ChrisB

Thank you Armin for your lesson! After all, Ginger Rogers had to do everything just as well as Fred Astair did backwards and in high heels.

ChrisB

I agree with you that the extreme sexism is awful. The only thing that allows toleration is the Ferengi have been well written and we know the misogyny is part of their culture. It’s still hard to watch.

ChrisB

This is Star Trek’s “Yentl” & “Victor/Victoria” sans music. They did a great job on this episode❤️

The reason I don't like this episode more, and I would put it at a 7, is partly because I find the big performance of some of the ferengi tonally jarring. It's a bit like having a guest appearance by the muppets when the Nagus is present. Partly because the Ferengi sexim is a bit too painful to watch. There aren't many "Ferengi episodes" I love, but there ARE many Quark-episodes I love. House of Quark coming up in early season 3 is one of my favourite comedic episodes in all of Star Trek.

Jennifer

I've always loved Ferengi episodes and I don't care who knows it!! I appreciate them even more after hearing Armin's insight.

Thank you for your concern for Terry, however both descriptors were discussed with Terry and Armin. They were both given many descriptor options and the ones used are the ones they picked. We have a great team here who is always thinking about how we can best treat our two new hosts and we would never decide something like that without consulting them.

Love Brian Thompson, he was great in X-Files and as a Klingon in TNG's A Matter of Honor and too many more roles to list.

Jim-Rhonda Lancaster

Both Jadzia and Terry are SO much more than enchanting, however, enchanting is still among the list of qualities they both have, just make sure you point out all of her other fabulous qualities sometimes, too!

ChrisB

Guys, please stop with the “enchanting” science officer? Jadzia Dax is so much more! Terry of course is enchanting, etc…!

Susan Braisby

Armin, the Ferengi episodes are my favourites!
