I can’t believe that I missed this when it aired. Thanks for having Jamie! There are so many layers in the Odo/Kira relationship. And having ‘Constable’ Odo’s origin story with Dukat being the impetus IS delicious. And he’s the perfect character for Film Noir. Just loved this episode. One podcast note: Kira WAS a terrorist, but she has moved onto a new life. One where spirituality and improving her soul is important. That doesn’t mean she doesn’t slip backwards from time to time, but I object to saying she IS a killer. She WAS a killer. She WAS a terrorist. But her character has changed and grown.

If you are constantly beholden to the entire cast in every episode you end up with shallower stories, I like the the writers weren’t shy about taking deep character dives and when they didn’t get the whole cast involved they made it worth it for what we learned about the characters we did see.

That makes sense to me, but it might not have flown to have a series regular be agender in the ‘90s 😅 that’s my best guess. That said, them being literally fluid but choosing how to present does say something about gender being in your head & not in your body parts (or, in their case, goo)

I finally had a chance to finish this episode and it's one of my favorite of the DS9 rewatch so far. Having Conway here was so awesome. Everyone else was great as usual too!

I have kept quiet for years but I’ll just throw this out there as a rhetorical question…. Why is Odo a “male” ? The leader of the founders is a “female”. Why aren’t they androgynous? I mean when they are part of the great link, are there males and females?

I mean, Robbie and Garrett started at 8.2 and 7.99999 (and sometimes mention they had X, but after the podcast conversation are upping - or lowering - it to Y, which obviously the Patreon voters don't have the advantage of), so the 7.8 average isn't far off their mark. And, thing is, a *lot* of the Patreons have seen all of DS9, more than once, and (while I gave this one an 8; we can't do decimals!) a lot of GOOD and VERY GOOD episodes are tough to rate higher than an 8 (or a 9 if really forced to round up rather than down) when we know we need room for the 9s and 10s. Unlike our hosts, we can't bump it to an 11 or 15 for the truly exceptional ones. 😂 But they haven't seen the full series, or haven't seen it all recently or multiple times, so their qualitative scale is likely inherently different than most of the Patreons participating in the voting.

I think the difference is that on Voyager, it was generally consistently the same roughly half of underutilized characters - whereas on DS9, they did a lot more focusing on small groups or half of the cast (regulars or regulars + recurring guest stars) in individual episodes, but it would be a different combination next, and so on. So it worked out relatively evenly for the DS9 cast, whereas on Voyager, not so much.

I do get the preference, especially coming from an ensemble show themselves, but DS9 definitely did a LOT more "focus on two or three or half of the cast (and major recurring guest stars)" and then spread it around episode to episode - as I recall, it was pretty even overall (except for, of the series regulars, Jake). Whereas on Voyager, and possibly other ensembles Robbie has worked on?, the underutilized characters were a lot more consistent and it didn't work out relatively evenly overall.

This podcast episode would serve as a great drinking game. Every time the words "Film Noir" are said, take a drink. You will be drunk half way through the podcast. Another weapon brought onto the station. Odo must be the shittiest security guy in the galaxy. He even states in the scene that he knows what kinds of weapons can get past the security measures. If he knows this, then why has Odo not fixed this weakness in security? Whoever said that was not Armin in the scene getting shot is 100% correct. After pausing over and over, it is clear that they used a stunt double. Maybe he was remembering another time he used the harness. Even "The Nitpickers guide for DS9" by Phil Farrand notes that it was a stunt double. Getting a little a tired of Armin referring to Kira as a Terrorist instead of a rebel or freedom fighter. The man of letters should look up those words to better understand the difference. This is from the US DOJ website: "While both terrorists and freedom fighters resort to violence and justify their actions in terms of ideological arguments, terrorists differ in targeting innocent victims -- a violation of human rights and a form of oppression in which freedom fighters would not engage." While sometimes freedom fighters may kill innocent people by accident while targeting the other side, the intent is what matters as it does in most laws. The difference in the situations as noted in the post above between Kira and Quark is that Quark gets people killed and injured for money which makes him a criminal. Kira kills people to get rid of the invaders and enslavers who are occupying and destroying her planet. Despite what Tv and movies have brain washed the people of this country into thinking, war is not clean and surgical where no innocent people get hurt. War is messy, nasty, disgusting, evil, horrific and destroys your soul. Innocent people are ALWAYS killed during a war. Why do you think there are so many veterans with metal health issues who need help coming back from a war and why so many commit suicide? Kira did what she did to ensure her people were liberated and if that includes killing a collaborator, then so be it. Read about what happened to Nazi collaborators both during and after WWII in Europe and that will give you some perspective.

I often agree with a lot of what is said in the recap and evaluation of an episode. However, I feel that something has been overlooked. In past podcasts there have been comments about how Quark, for example, has gotten away with crimes without any consequences, but in this episode Kira literally gets away with murder. Throughout the episode Odo talks about justice and whoever committed the crime will pay for their crime. So either Odo no longer views the murder of a collaborator during an occupation as a crime or that the damage to his trust/friendship with Kira is punishment enough. 🤔

I disagree that Kira should have wounded or done anything less than kill the chemist. I understand why she needed to kill him, unsavory as it was. He was an active collaborator with the Cardassians and Gul Dukat specifically. Do we really think Kira would let him get away to blow her cover? No way, this was wartime for her. It's just more shadows to add to her past and her character, it's what makes the show interesting. Also, I will agree with Armin, I'm not sure why the fan rating was so low. Excellent episode.

Whoa! James Conway is here? I'm still n watching but I just have to comment that I pretty much love all the episodes he directed from TNG to Enterprise. I mean, this is the man that directed Duet! Can't wait to hear his insight. I'm sure his time is limited, but it'd be cool to have Mr. Conway back for way of the warrior, for the cause, or little green men (a personal favorite of mine).

Personally, I don't think it detracts from an episode because it only focuses on a few of the regulars. Each episode is only 42 minutes and change, and there's 26 episodes a season, so plenty of time to feature everyone. Also, I kind of think it's a plus when you don't feel like you have to shoehorn in all the characters into one episode just so they get a few lines of dialogue. I think Armin is right. This is a top 10, 15 episode of DS9, IMO.

I'm with Armin...I don't get why not having every character in an episode lowers it. What exactly would you have O'Brien or Jake do in this story, and what scenes would you remove in order to make room for them? Cirroc Lofton is only in 71 episodes total, because there just isn't a whole lot he would organically have to do with most storylines.

This episode made me a little sad, mostly because Quark was injured and on life support for most of the episode (I don't like any episode where Quark gets hurt). Really liked watching Odo taking charge in solving the mystery, this episode really delves in how Odo solves mysteries onboard the station. Great seeing the episode's director, James L. Conway as a special guest! Loved the commentary on this episode; the part where Professor Shimerman was saying "don't drop me!" repeatedly in the scene where his character (Quark) was being carried out was hilarious!
