The bass was nice but I think the tempo change is what really made it feel more dynamic. Love both versions but prefer the later one.

Hey there! I just subscribed! Lifelong fan. Question for Robbie and Garrett. Did y’all notice that the scene with the JemHadar ships firing weapons toward the screen was reused later in the episode Parturition in voyager when Tom and Kes are in the shuttle simulation? Always thought that was interesting. Wondered if it popped out to you when you saw that vfx again.

Someone's question was if they liked the new bass in the intro. But it's in season 4 that it changes.

Ratings Robbie: 8. Terry: 8. Garrett: 7.5. He says that Robbie and Terry's positive views influenced him to raise his score a bit. Patreon patrons/fans: 7.8. It's right between all three if their ratings but if Garrett had stuck with his initial lower rating (closer to 7.0?), he'd have been furthest "off" the fans in this case. None of the three hosts directly explained their rating reasoning this time. (Except insofar as their reasoning is spread throughout the entire podcast.) It seems to me they all liked DS9 S3e1 well enough, thought the continuing storyline worked and was enjoyable to follow. All three are "on board" with where DS9 is going for seasons 3-7, which is more significsnt for Robbie and Garrett given it is their first watch-thru. 1:30:30 -- 1:31:30

"Go to warp" (Voyager) vs. "Go into warp" (DS9, this episode) (54:00 -- 54:50) Robbie and Garrett suggest "go to warp" is better. Robbie suggests that we say that we go "to" sixty m.p.h. on the road when driving a car, so of course the Voyager way ("go to warp") is better. But isn't warp vs. impulse power more like a motor vehicle's gear shift? And we say: "go/shift into second gear." I'd suggest the conflict could be resolved in this way: If specifying a specific "speed" like warp 4.0, a cruising speed for a trip that might take one or two days of ship-time, use "Go to warp 4." Go from one speed "to" a certain other speed. If the important thing is to shift "gears," from impulse to warp --- for example, to clear out of a place a.s.a.p. regardless of warp "cruising speed" --- use "Go into warp."

I thought the scene was hilarious. They seem to collapse Quark & Armin and take umbrage to any perceived disrespect regarding Quark the character who is well written and has a great story arc…🤷

I really feel people need to take more care to avoid spoilers for Robbie and Garrett when they asked questions. It wasn’t revealed in this episode who the founders were, but a question almost gave the answer away. We’ve all seen the series multiple times, but we need to remember the guys are on a first watch.

In terms of piloting, I always thought about it as any adult can probably fly a ship from A to B (autopilot probably means just putting in the destination and pressing "Go"), most Starfleet personnel can probably do rudimentary combat flying (e.g. push a button to activate "Defence Pattern Delta"), but it takes a good pilot to be able to do actual precision flying in e.g. combat, or a meteor shower. So like driving a car vs piloting a plane vs piloting a plane in a dogfight.

I disagree with their interpretation of the tone of the Sisko/Quark interactions in this episode. I felt like the scene with the Nagus staff was friendly ribbing, directly following the development of their relationship in the previous episode. Sisko was messing with Quark, in the same way I'd mess with any of my good friends. I didn't see it as disrespectful at all.

Not specific to this episode, but has anyone else been re-watching DS9 and wondering with every DS9 episode how the Delta Flyers will react to it? It's been really fun, but I keep watching S6 and S7 episodes and being both impatient for the DF eps on those and also never wanting DF episodes to end. The paradox of life, I guess.

I came here to say the same thing. But there is a difference between knowing how to pilot a runabout and flying one. Besides its space everyone needs to get around so piloting is basic skills to have but if you need to make the Kessel run in less then 12 parsecs you call Tom Paris Doc aint gonna be able to do that. That would make a great Wars vs Trek Tom Pairs vs Solo race around the system who wins?

I think what undermines the concept of a pilot in Star Trek the most is all the "attack patterns" and "evasive patterns," which are weird jargon and also just dictate to the pilot which pattern to replicate. A computer could do it. Who needs Dax let alone Paris.

I was the opposite, I felt that discussion went on much too long. To me it's perfectly logical that Starfleet requires officers, particularly senior officers to cross train/maintain a certain level of proficiency on key systems. Hence they can all fire phasers with a certain amount of skill, pilot runabouts etc. I mean if you worked and lived in space would you really feel comfortable not knowing how to fly a ship in an emergency. That's not saying Bashir is a highly skilled pilot but he can do it. In Voyager one thing they often made clear is that Tom Paris is considered a particularly skilled pilot and was able to do things even other pilots can't so I don't think Bashir taking over when there's no other choice really undermines Tom.

I liked the expanded conversation on the piloting skills of different characters. Bashir, as a doctor, should not be able to perform anything more than basic functions and certainly should not be able to recall specific attack patterns instantly (to be fair, things we learn about him later would explain this…). Although Robbie was joking, I can see how this does undermine the skills that characters like Tom Paris had supposedly developed with considerable training and practice. Of course, it’s a show and stories must be told so it’s best not to dwell on such matters.
