[Ratings] Robbie: 8.4. "I loved this episode! My only critique is the Bashir storyline." Robbie says he "would have given it a 9" if the B-story were done better. He insists that S3e6 is "one of the favorite episodes [he] has seen" so far and he genuinely enjoyed it. Garrett and Armin express shock. Armin: 5. Armin says he "didn't think this episode was 'going' anywhere until the prophets scene." The comedy was too broad, no one has any character development; Armin thinks this was a throwaway episode regarding "the narrative of thr show." Robbie pushes back substantially. Armin says it's useful to hear Robbie's perspective as an outsider. Garrett: 8.0. Garrett insists it was entertaining and that therefore it deserves a good score regardless of Armin's valid criticisms. Fans/Patrons: 7.2. Garrett and Robbie express surprise that it is low; they expected higher. Garrett's score was closest to the fans' score, as usual. (1:34:45--1:37:50)

Right? Also episodes like these provide character insight to the audience. One could argue that it progresses our understanding of the character(s) and their motivations, which may come into play later in the series.

Yeah, and it's also something people commonly do often as a defense mechanism; downplay how much hope/excitement they have to temper expectations, or to not "jinx" something. I'm a bit surprised that they didn't connect this to their own experiences, like a for a role or project that they (or a colleague) really wanted; but when asked, they might say, "Oh, it's no big deal, I probably won't get it anyway."

The whole thing with Bashir will make sense in later seasons. There is a big reason why he downplays his ambitions

Well there are two things Armim mentions here where I think just not remembering previous events is the issue. As you say the Orbs are stolen from the Bajorans so selling them back is wrong but also saying how come the Prophets accept Siskos argument when actually what happens is he accepts theirs, that he actually still lives in the past despite his contention that time is linear. Also Sisko doesn't go in demanding anything from them like Zek does.

I quite like the low key B stories we see in the second half of this season. They give the impression of DS9 as a living place and show the crew spending time with each other outside work. That said though I don't agree with Armin that every episode has to progress things I do find this one a little dull. I'd probably go for a 6.5 myself.

I would argue the opening scene sets the mood for the male domination of the Ferengi society. Spoiler . . . . . . . . This also happens with Nog in a later episode.

I thoroughly enjoy Armin’s perspectives, even when they differ from mine. In this case, I just think he’s too close to the execution of the A story to review it objectively. As Robbie and Garrett pointed out, there was a lot to like. I also think it did advance Rom’s story, even planting the seed for where he ends up at the end of the series. While I do think the Bashir story could have been developed a little bit better, I also think it continues to advance Bashir’s growth, including how much characters that once couldn’t stand him now genuinely care about him and his success. Consequently, I think this episode is a sold 8.

Regarding the opening scene, remember it was the 90s. Sexploitation was rampant in society. Not to justify but it was a sign of the times. I agree that it was inappropriate.

With respect to Armin, he’s dead wrong about the ethics of Zek selling the orb to the Bajorans. The orbs are stolen goods. They were forcibly taken by Cardassian conquerors. Zek probably would have gotten it though Cardassian black marketeering. They are like the Benin Bronzes or Parthenon marbles. They belong to the Bajorans.
