Late comment, but the quibble with the phaser is easy to explain. It must have been fired at the lowest possible setting, and we know that a phaser set to stun only renders a humanoid unconscious without injuring them, and some humanoids are resistant to the stun setting. Furthermore, it's not a stretch that to surmise that since changelings can reproduce many different surfaces and objects which have the various properties such as different degrees of hardness, they can take a form which is tolerant to phaser fire on the lowest setting. Their biology remains rather mysterious and all of their properties aren't established on-screen, and again we know that humanoids can be unharmed by a stun setting.

Yeah I didn't mind the quibbles much this time because the B plot of this episode deserves to be criticised but this one, and a few others, was weird to me as well.

Yes, you can enlist. O'Brien didn't attend the academy and doesn't fit under the same rank system as the officers. He mentions in a later episode that when Nog graduates he'll have to call him sir. It's not something they've really explained that well though. I guess Nog could view joining the academy as the true starfleet experience or perhaps non Federation citizens can't enlist.

It is utterly horrific. I don't know how Nana just kept on functioning so she could go to work and be Kira. It’s my understanding that they can’t just enlist. They can be given a field commission and and then do the Academy or go right into the academy once accepted.

Maybe a silly question, but does everyone who joins Star Fleet have to go to the academy? Or only if you want to be an officer? Nog said he just wanted to join. Couldn't he 'enlist?'

The quibbles were too much in this episode. After an hour i had to turn it off because the complaining was too much and I couldn’t enjoy it. I came back a few days later but i hope they don’t continue nitpicking this much in future episodes.

I respectfully disagree that nothing moves forward in terms of the arc of Odo and Kira. The audience gets to see how absolutely terrified Odo is about his feelings for Kira. So terrified that he denies it in his own mind. It may not be quantum leaps forward, but it is moving forward and he realizes how scared he is of his feelings for Kira. That’s called character development.

With all due respect, when Sisko shakes Nog, that scene was so unexpected and powerful. It brought a depth to Nog that we have not yet seen. Avery is a brilliant actor and Aaron kept right with him…amazing.

I am also a high school teacher and I see this with adolescents. At some point, they will pivot and understand the seriousness of what’s before them and this is the episode when Nog makes that pivot. It’s actually a very wonderful thing to see if it happens during the school year. Sometimes it happens over the summer and the student comes back and they’ve made the pivot. It’s wonderful to see.

I'm about halfway through, but it seems like the guys were all unaware of Nana's extremely traumatic personal circumstances, which played a big part in the emotions she displayed while trapped in the crystal. There were real personal reasons for the tears.

I like Kira/Odo because they have the same personality types as my parents (ISFP and ISTJ), suffice it to say they're opposites. I'm the same type as Nog (ESTJ) so I resonate with his character, he's at his worst until he has something to work towards in life and then he does a 180.

Here the "everyone but Kira knows Odo is in love with her" is heading towards the absurd. We've now learnt that Lwaxana knows and the Dominion knows, and in a few episodes we find out that even the ROMULANS know! If they know, the entire galaxy except Kira must be aware of it.

As a HS teacher I have been where Sisko was with Nog several times when I've had students ask for a letter of recommendation. I've never grabbed student but I get why Sisko did. He knows Nog will face a lot of prejudice and he will have to be able to withstand that, even from people he may come to admire or respect. He needs to be able to stand up for himself and push back. It's a powerful scene.

I love Odo but that story in this episode was entirely forgettable. The Nog plotline though is perfection.
