Something that may need further examination: our hosts here are all but eliminating their own reproduction -- a child every 25 years among around 180 couples (apparently all or nearly all of childbearing age at their level of technology) suggests that more than 90% of them will die childless. Yet they're still trading with folks like Sorcha and Malcolm and acquiring more people, as opposed, apparently, to growing their own. Even if they're doing it to minimize inbreeding, it doesn't sound as though the genes they're adding have much of a chance of regenerating, unless they rig the lottery and let even fewer of their own people reproduce. The city dwellers do seem to have a varied and exotic range of food choices. Had me idly thinking that perhaps stewed strangers might be a menu possibility after all (g).

What if... the city building people are human? My current theory is so full of possible spoilers I wont post them here myself.

So it's a metallic object shaped at least roughly like a rocket -- though it's still too blurry to see detail. I'd say the spaceship hypothesis certainly can't be rejected at this point, and if that turns out to be the case, it'll probably head directly for the planet when it gets close enough. Of course, that'd still leave us not knowing it the folks -- or AI -- controlling it are human, or the citybuilders' people, or none of the above. Our protagonists may even be right, sort of: if the original city people left to avoid an enemy attack, the "dagger" may in fact be a planet-busting weapon. My guess as to what happens next is too much of a spoiler to post here. But it'd leave Merlyn feeling vindicated.

I disagree! 20,000 KM is only about 40% more than the diameter of the Earth. It's WAY too bloody close! And 3% error? It isn't said if that is 3% of location or 3% of path. There's also the give or take an hour comment. Four days away would be 96 hours if they use 24 hour days, so one hour would be 1% margin of error. And even that is too much! :)

The Goddess

Interesting chapter 20,000 KM is pretty far away and even with a 3% error is not a problem The train sounds interesting Nice alliteration on the doctor's name Nice telescope
