I do agree that their marriage did look fine, especially to us. But for themselves, it kinda became evident that Ashley was susceptible to advances because they were different for her and Jacob makes the realization (through therapy in 26 I'm pretty sure) that there was cracks in their relationship from even before Carlos. That doesn't mean she was ALWAYS going to end up cheating on him or even divorcing, but it definitely alludes to the possibility that the red flags were there at the start and change was always coming, good or bad. I also believe the lack of friends, hobbies, or even a social life in general for Ashley was key for emphasizing how they as a couple would exist outside their comfort zone lile their apartment. (That's definitely a hot take I'm not too excited to defend since I'm typically pretty lonely myself lol but I believe it applies here) Also yeah, kinda surprised at the lack of Carlos in the end. He did feel like a secondary character all throughout so it is a little odd there wasn't a send-off for him too. I'm choosing to believe his BJJ didn't live up to other (better) fighting styles and he was exploited

Well, I’m torn. Clearly, it’s a well written ending. It’s pretty good and I appreciate how both have healed significantly from the traumatic events. I'm glad its not a reconciliation. However, I disagree with the thoughts of some that they had a boring marriage, or stagnant I believe was one thought. From chapter 1 it seemed to me they got along well, and that there was stability, communication, mutual interest. It had usually been Ashley that wanted to try new things, and that doesn't imply anything stagnant. It was just her personality. And Jacob went along well with the JJ idea. Again, nothing wrong with that. What was wrong was Ashley's reasons for lying and cheating to her husband. Dr. Martinez said it was an escape from a life too "demanding and too safe." It wasn't the stability or safety that was the problem, or any stagnation. Everyone wants some stability, and stability doesn't need to be boring. But he mentioned the simultaneous "demanding." What does that mean? Jacob wasn't "demanding." There wasn't any indication in any chapter that her job was "demanding." What was "demanding"? It was her inner need for something different, something she didn't really know, and that's why she always flitted from one interest to another. That inner need "demanded" excitement to keep her interest. And when meeting Carlos, he only fed that need, that inner "demand" she had to fill, and that's why the affair became so torrid and destructive. The reason I'm torn about the conclusion is two-fold: 1. I feel Ashley's mental state could be better explained, and, 2. Some resolution for the real bad guy here, Carlos. Many readers were furious with Carlos, his sociopathy, his willing and intended violence to Jacob, the damage he did to the marriage and perhaps other student's relationships as well. As it is, the conclusion is satisfying and I commend Eddie for an excellent series and for his outstanding writing. The fact that I wrote these last comments indicate how much I appreciate the story and how he pricked both mine and many others emotions throughout. Well-done Eddie!

• Although I don't totally mind seeing them, the total reconciliation endings do seem a bit too dreamy often times, for me. Then on the other side you have the downright insane endings that realistically don't solve or help anything/anyone. Having the Ashley and Jacob fully heal/adapt to their newer selves and leaving what happens next for the two open to interpretation with a boost of optimism is perfect. • Also love the mention of going back to her maiden name. Definitely a significant detail that some stories overlook.
