I gave the boy an older adopted brother who is clearly more mature and responsible.
Children too young should generally not have sole responsibility for a pet. Often they can't properly estimate the demands or lose interest after a while. Parents must be aware of this.

Oh thank gods he is still alive. My heart broke in so many pieces. I have 2 hamsters and I could never neglect any animal like that.
