Thanks for the detailed, informative analysis. I wish someone in the media (news channels) would go into this detail so that people would understand the implications of instituting a no fly zone. Not an option without total war with Russia, which NATO obviously doesn't want to do.

Thanks very much for the thoughtful analysis, I am amazed that this issue has been raised as a serious option.

A very fair analysis IMO. It's both amazing and scary that there are so many voices calling for a NFZ seemingly without grasping that this would involve both the threat, and almost certainly necessity, for NATO aircraft to use deadly force against Russian assets. It makes as much sense as calling for sending in NATO ground forces to enforce a "no troops zone".

You asked, so here's my view. A No-Fly-Zone is not an option for NATO forces right now. As you said, it is a ticket to war with Russia. Also, it is completely impractical due to the reasons you cited. Russia has shown a complete unwillingness to even guarantee evacuation corridors for civilians. I have no doubt that a NFZ would almost instantly lead to a direct NATO-Russia hot war. Supplying Ukrainian pilots with Soviet-era fighters is about the only realistic option.
