Chapter 1186 - A Moment To Be Humbled
🕑 Added 2025-07-24 11:17:57 +0000 UTCJake really hadn’t met a lot of archers during his Path so far. Sure, there had been one here and there, but none of the so-called “geniuses” he usually surrounded himself with were archers.
Sure, there was Maria, but Jake had never sparred with her and wouldn’t call them super close. She wasn’t even part of Jake’s “faction” but a mercenary serving under Gwyndyr, who was likely the top archer of the multiverse based on what Jake had heard.
Considering that, her archery skill was likely better than Jake’s. In fact, Jake was fairly confident most archers considered talented had better than an epic rarity skill when closing in on B-grade.
The archery skill was one Jake used every day, and based on his conversations with Artemis, the majority of hunters dedicated a lot of time to practicing and improving. It was, in most instances, the most effective skill to upgrade if one wanted to get stronger, as it affected pretty much everything one did while wielding a bow.
Just the stat effectiveness alone from a high-level archery skill made it damn valuable. However, knowing all this hadn’t done Jake much good. No amount of studying he had done had helped him improve his prowess with a bow, and even when he had tried to merge other concepts into it, nothing had worked... well, not besides getting his Unblemished Arrows upgraded, anyway.
Seeing someone like the wood elf currently bombarding Jake with a ceaseless storm of arrows really made Jake realize how far behind he truly was. Sure, when it came to overall power, he was far superior, and if he used all his other skills, winning wouldn’t be difficult.
But that wasn’t the point of this. Instead, it was a moment for Jake to be humbled for the first time in a long time.
The wood elf chased Jake all over the moon as Jake slowly learned more and more about her archery skill, and he identified four effects. Sure, it was possible some of these came from other passive skills, but he was fairly confident most were related to her archery skill, and he was damn near sure the last one was. The first one was the passive wind that carried each arrow forward, granting it extra speed and striking power while also granting her slight control over its flight path.
Second was the bow’s ability to “echo” her shots. It seemingly remembered her movements and stored energy to shoot automatic follow-ups in between her regular draws, increasing her firing speed by a quite frankly silly amount.
Third was the momentum she was building with every arrow. The wind surrounding her increased in intensity as she continued to attack, and the bow seemed to only grow stronger with every echoed arrow.
Fourth and finally was the hardest aspect of the skill to identify, and one he only noticed after having more than a dozen arrows sticking out of his body. The elf’s damage output was incredibly low, courtesy of her insane focus on speed, but this last effect made up for it.
Because he realized that the echoed shots didn’t grow stronger. Just faster. In fact, when Jake managed to shoot down some of his opponent’s attacks, he noticed it didn’t consume more energy even as the wood elf’s power seemed to improve. The same was true when he blocked with arcane barriers.
Yet the damage he took from every arrow increased, making Jake conclude that the final effect was a stacking damage buff based on how many arrows she had hit on a target thus far. That explained why her first arrows had been so weak, barely penetrating Jake’s flesh and armor, and why the latter ones were so much stronger.
Making matters worse, Jake learned that even if he blocked an arrow using his bow’s body, it still counted as him getting hit, likely simply due to the arrow making contact with his Soulshape.
In summary, his opponent was an archer who could shoot insanely fast, with her speed only increasing further the longer the fight went on. Meanwhile, each arrow would deal more damage than the last up to some limit Jake was confident he didn’t want to experience.
Usually, an archer like the wood elf, who was too focused on speed over power, would find themselves struggling against foes with powerful defenses. Based on her first arrows that hit him, she wouldn’t even have been able to injure most of the C-grades Jake had killed so far. Not with the first shot, anyway.
However, what about arrow number ten? Fifty? The one-hundredth? Dependent on how high the damage could scale, her damage would eventually become insane, and she had effectively turned the matchup on its head, making her an incredible fighter against durable but slower foes.
Of course, her Path did also have some drawbacks. The fact that her first arrows were so weak meant she had to drag out battles to get the upper hand, and stealth was also out of the question. At least she couldn’t ever approach someone like Jake’s ability to shoot stupidly powerful arrows capable of killing a monster a grade above himself in a single shot... though to be fair, few archers would ever even get close to that level.
In a battle like this, where stealth wasn’t a factor and it was just a pure archery duel, she was in a dream scenario. Even though Jake was a tough opponent for her due to his high mobility and uncanny ability to dodge almost everything, she still had a massive advantage.
With all that in mind, the outcome of their duel shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone.
“Let’s stop here,” Artemis’ voice in the sky echoed after the fight had lasted in excess of two hours. “Before it gets too dangerous for one of you.”
Jake, who had prepared to shoot another arrow, lowered his bow as pain wracked his entire body. A few kilometers away – the distance created by Jake to try to avoid getting hit too much – the wood elf did the same as she willed her arrows already in flight to disperse and wither away.
She also had a few wounds here and there, with several burns on her left side from exploded arcane arrows. There were five arrow-holes from when Jake struck her with stable arrows, a feat he was quite proud of.
Though he probably shouldn’t be, taking his own state into account.
“The Chosen of the Malefic Viper managed to land five direct hits as well as twenty-eight indirect ones,” Artemis nicely summarized their encounter. “Gladiel, on the other hand, with... two hundred and nine direct hits, seventy indirect ones.”
... Jake hadn’t exactly kept count, but going by his body being entirely red from being covered in his own blood and the fact he’d already consumed two healing potions during the fight – something that was allowed – it wasn’t that surprising.
Even now, twenty-one arrows still stuck out of him that he hadn’t had the time to pluck out. He had been hit so many times that there were places he had been hit five times after healing the wound in between every arrow.
As for whether Jake had discovered the upper limit of the wood elf named Gladiel’s damage output, the answer remained no.
“I need to ask,” Jake said shortly after Artemis made her announcement as he teleported closer despite his multitude of wounds. “That increasing damage effect with every arrow hit... does it scale with Perception?”
Gladiel, who had been kneeling while in the presence of Artemis’ aura, looked up and nodded. “The damage increases and the upper cap both scale with Perception, while my Agility determines the speed at which it stacks up.”
“I see,” Jake nodded. “That makes a lot of sense. How about the effect that made you faster the longer the battle dragged on? Was that related to your archery skill?”
To clarify, Jake had found the upper cap of that skill after the fight went on for around half an hour.
“No, that’s another passive skill of mine,” Gladiel answered respectfully. “The Wind’s Blessing, Nature’s Echo, and Hunter’s Fury effects are all from my archery skill. Those are the winds enveloping my arrows, my bow repeating attacks, and the stacking damage, respectively. There are also some other minor aspects to the skill that aren’t visible or overly impactful.”
“Thanks for the clarification,” Jake said, genuinely grateful that she offered up knowledge like this when she truthfully didn’t have to.
“It’s an honor to be of assistance to the Chosen,” Gladiel bowed deeply. “I hope my efforts can prove useful.”
“Definitely food for thought,” Jake smiled.
“Indeed, let us hope the Chosen benefits. As for you, Gladiel, I’m pleased to see that you have adapted your strategy to better suit your new archery skill, but do not let it become a limitation. If one aspect of your Path becomes too powerful compared to the rest, it can hamper all progress in other areas. A current weakness of your archery skill is facing mages capable of blocking your arrows, never allowing them to make contact, so I task you with seeking out the Druidic Order and...”
As with the last duelist Jake had faced, Artemis finished the encounter by giving them some advice on how they could improve. For Gladiel, her task was to fight a group of casters to develop strategies for dealing with them.
When it came to Jake, he did feel somewhat inspired. In some ways, the archery skill of Gladiel reminded Jake of his own Relentless Hunt in that he could build up Hunting Momentum as the fight went on and unleash it in one mighty blow. Of course, what the wood elf had was far superior to Jake’s skill, but there were also some crucial differences.
Hunting Momentum didn’t have to be built up during combat. It could also come to be simply from stalking his opponent for long enough. Moreover, it was best used for a single, powerful blow rather than many smaller ones.
Having something like that, stacking damage with every subsequent arrow landed, would no doubt be a massive benefit to Jake and would increase his damage output significantly... but Jake knew he couldn’t get it.
Such a concept simply didn’t fit his Path. He could try to adapt his Path to make room for such a concept, but he didn’t want to.
Gladiel walked a Path of gradually growing in power throughout the battle while starting out weak. Jake’s Path was all about starting the fight out with a bang, unleashing an opening attack sometimes powerful enough to outright slay or cripple his foe.
If they did survive, it wasn’t as if Jake didn’t also have accumulating damage. He just didn’t get it from his archery skill, but from the poison on his arrows. Of course, currently, his archery skill had nothing to do with his poisons or interacted with them at all... which was something to consider.
In fact, it was a little odd that Jake hadn’t thought about it before. Maybe because other skills like Malefic Viper’s Poison already made the poisons he inflicted stronger, sure, but nothing said he couldn’t double-dip a little. Fangs of the Malefic Viper already did. It passively empowered any toxins on his “fangs,” which his arrows weren’t considered part of.
He also realized that his archery skill had fuck-all to do with his arcane energy, despite nearly every other archery-related skill he had using his own affinity. Sure, his archery skill did talk about mixing archery with magic, but only to the extent of infusing them with Willpower for him to control their flight path.
The more he looked at his archery skill, the more he saw how much it was missing, especially when compared to his melee skill, Fangs of Man.
[Archery of Expanding Horizons (Epic)] - An Archer’s best friend is the bow in his hand and the arrow in his foe’s heart. As your horizons expand, you realize flaws and build upon a foundation to make that expansion ever-present. You do not shy away from mixing archery with magic and making your arrows arbiters of your will. Your arrows will cross all horizons and bend over any obstacle to pierce your target, with only your own will limiting the possibilities. Allows you to apply your will to control the trajectory of arrows before releasing them. Adds a small bonus to the effect of Agility and Strength when using a ranged weapon. Adds a small damage bonus to all arrows based on distance traveled and Perception. Arrow trajectory control based on Willpower.
It effectively did three things as it was. It allowed him to control the flight of his arrows, add damage based on Agility and Strength when wielding a ranged weapon, and add extra damage to his arrows based on distance and Perception. The second one was something all archery skills did, so it barely counted, which meant all Jake’s could do was make him bend his arrows a little and do a bit more damage.
Quite frankly pathetic when he compared it to Gladiel, whom he had just faced. It only got worse when he compared it to his own legendary rarity Fangs of Man, which did so much more.
It allowed him to turn anything he wielded into a weapon, merge melee weapons into his Soulshape, increased durability of any melee weapon, made him better at using anything considered a melee weapon, provided passive stat effectiveness, made his hands and some of his forearms more durable when wielding melee weapons, with this effect being better when used on a Soulbound item. Conservatively, it did at least six or seven things, and it did all of them pretty damn well.
Jake was deep in thought as Artemis got done speaking with Gladiel.
“Return for now. I may call upon you again if I deem it relevant,” she said to the wood elf, who bowed with reverence.
“If that’s what the Mistress of the Hunt desires, then I shall stand ready,” Gladiel said, turning to Jake. “And thank you once more for this opportunity.”
Jake just gave her a nod of acknowledgment, and a second later, she was done. Another second after that, Artemis teleported onto the moon and looked Jake up and down.
“Did you have an accident or something?” she asked in a joking tone.
“Oh, yeah, clumsy me stumbled into a couple of hundred arrows, you know how I am,” Jake joked back as he sat down, still very much in pain.
“You got quite a beating, eh?” Artemis asked rhetorically, shaking her head.
“Sure did,” Jake chuckled.
Artemis smiled as she looked at him. “Seeing you so elegantly accept the loss was a relief. I’m not gonna lie, I feared you would decide to use other skills than what we agreed upon once it was clear you would lose. That your Bloodline wouldn’t allow your ego to suffer the damage incurred by losing to someone else whom you should rightfully be able to beat.”
“I’m a bit offended by that,” Jake scoffed. “This is just sparring, not a fight to the death. If failure doesn’t mean death, it’s not real failure; it’s just practice. Admittedly, there was probably a time right after I awakened my Bloodline when I wouldn’t have accepted the possibility of ever losing, and my parents did mention that I was overly competitive when I was really young, but now I really don’t care. I guess alchemy really desensitized me to the concept of failure, as hot damn do I fail a lot when doing alchemy.”
“That makes sense,” Artemis smiled. “I guess that means you’re not going to be angry even if your next few opponents beat you as handily as Gladiel did?”
“I would prefer to at least feel like I have a fighting chance,” Jake chuckled, shaking his head. “But I can’t deny it was a good experience. Even if I can’t directly adopt anything my opponent does, just seeing them and their Path makes me think.”
“And we both know how hard it is to make you do that,” Artemis teased him. “And luckily for you, there are plenty more archers who were more than willing to get a chance to spar with the Chosen of the Malefic Viper.”
“Let’s just hope this doesn’t end up with my reputation being ruined,” Jake sighed.
“Bold of you to assume anyone cares how good you are at archery,” Artemis shook her head. “All that matters is your overall power. This kind of practice isn’t all that rare either. Several extremely skilled archers suck if forced into melee combat, so they purposefully spar with people that can force them into such a situation to improve, even if it inevitably ends with them getting their ass kicked.”
“That makes me feel a bit better,” Jake said with relief.
“Though it would be super embarrassing if you lost to all of them...”
Jake glared at the god as she smiled. “Pleasant recovery, and good luck with your next opponent. Don’t worry, he’s not as strong as Gladiel, but, well, your prospects still aren’t good.”

I do not think you are giving Artemis enough credit, she was interacting with primordials basicly the top 10 gods in all universes so of course her power was not up to that level. Nearly every god is lile that around valdemar and the Malefic viper etc. Now she is a god queen and likely in the top 10-20% of gods around in addition to being on her home turf.

eh could time skip this stuff in my opinion, that elf would have gotten absolutely wrecked if he used any of his other skills on top, this kind of feels like filler fluff plus god i might be in the minority but not a big fan of Artemis, she talks big for someone who was literally scared of every other god like 6 months ago

Although it doesn't make that much sense? Artemis says her weakness is mages blocking the arrows? So barriers would work? His barriers should be strong enough, especially if he focuses all the energy to a very small point guided by his danger sense. Then the arrows would stay weak and she wouldn't gain that buff throughout the entire thing? It's not as if he has a barrier skill, so all his magic is on the table. Either the restrictions should have limited it or him not using it is an additional restriction he put on himself, which means it's not just about archery skills anymore but also an imbalance in energy control

If Jake took that path I would start hoping he died. Every chapter he survived after doing that would be plot armor. It is fundamentally incompatible with his drive to fight stronger enemies and his somewhat irrational inclination not to give up when he should. And his irrational aversion to safety precautions that interfere with challenge. If he takes a crippling weakness that applies to any significant fight he is likely to be in then he is incompatible with survival.
Prospects
It’s possible but the effect is a transcendent application of the concept of time and conceptual energy in addition to his arcane mana have to be expended from the attack to truly utilize it. The only source of these two in this sparring being the Arrow creation skill and his Archery skill, both of which are epic rarity and pretty lackluster. He can do it but to truly use it he would have to expend most of the attacks energy to accomplish and in the process create a very fast arrow that does about as much damage as a wet noodle.

I think it'd be funny if he had the exact opposite effect to the speed girl. A general buff that massively increases his arrow damage but every subsequent hit lessens that advantage until he's eventually just shooting super weak shots. Sort of as a path saying if you can't kill them after this long you aren't going to.
Prospects
I honestly think Jake should be working towards more is synergy and usability with his other skills. His Mark, Relentless Hunt, Arrow Creation, Tracking, Piercing Fang, Stealth Attack, and first and foremost his Archery skill all are working somewhat in isolation and are still powerful but could be used better. Piercing fang is a good example of this even though it too is in need of an upgrade, it utilizes the power of eternal hunger and fangs of man to still perform pretty well all things considered. Mark is integral to his kit but could also do things like debuff or provide information on his adversary when hits are landed. Relentless hunt is really good but the scope is narrow, if he could use the empowerment more freely and not just on damage it would be a much better skill or just tie other skills in with it to accumulate momentum faster based on some stimuli. Arrow creation is a completely blank slate, he could make them more like Protean Arrow or find a way to make the arrows hide themselves when not being focused on to trigger stealth attack outside of the opening blow. Tracking should definitely stay a tracking skill but it could also do something like help his arrows track towards the Mark or gather momentum and information on his opponent like in the skill offering. Piercing fang should either add more mobility at close range like a vault of some type or it could give increased hunting momentum when counters are landed. Stealth Attack is probably the one of the most underutilized skills, the limitation of only being able to use it on the first attack needs to be circumvented somehow. With his archery skill I one of the things I suggested yesterday was incorporating the concept used in one step thousand miles, and i think the skill is mostly conceptual so it could be incorporated but it would have to be something that increases his speed and/or unpredictability of his arrows. More power would be nice, and a really high limit on the damage increase based on distance concept would be wasteful to not incorporate. Jake’s arrows also did absorb environmental mana and conceptual energy during the fight when he unleashed his bloodline against Valdemar’s image so that could be incorporated in his archery skill or probably the Arrow creation skill to the same effect.

He meant her specific style, she trades power in the initial exchange for overwhelming power towards the end. He even admits he uses some skills similar, but that the trade off of her specific path would hinder his more than help. Especially with so many of his skill choices already leaning towards a strong first strike.

I would need to disagree; this is a very, very large shift from his usual combat. This isn't increasing the damage the longer the fight goes on; this is a trade-off where he starts with much weaker damage to then reach maybe 200% of the damage he currently has. That sounds sweet until you realize both stealth and sneak attack become worthless, skills he is able to cripple even high-level enemies simply because of how insane it is.

I tend to disagree that sequential hits providing increased damage doesn't suit his path. His path is based around hunting prey stronger than him. He can't only one shot them, and has fought enemies for hours even as recently as as going to the hunting ground. I hope something good is had in mind, but it is odd how jake offhandedly denies this idea.

Awesome chapter… can’t wait to see how his arcane affinity will finally mix into his basic archery… I’m thinking it’ll add Arcane Arrows into his soul shape like Fangs of Man does for melee weapons, so that he can activate MV’s Legacy directly without having to coat the arrows

It would be fair. Jake sounds kinda obstinate about not especially learning things. To the extent that he just thinks "I don't want to" to damage scaling based off perception. "Perception is the best stat", and previously he had been fascinated by ways to incorporate perception scaling. The system should offer a sarcastic mediocre upgrade of his Pride skill instead. That's what is holding him back.

Jake says a path of building up his power over a battle is incompatible with him. He apparently hasn't read his books. Taking out bosses in one shot isnt how you get tense multi chapter boss fights. If Jake's archery path is so rigid that he is stuck with burst sniper abilities then it is a path incompatible with himself. He fights enemies out of his league by preference and by a (bloodline enforced) nature far more fundamental to him than his archery hobby.

I love how for the most part B grade is about harmonizing the concepts of the path the person is walking. Jake is very strong but as he realized, he doesn't combine a lot of concepts into one package, he delivers them individually. So if he can go from shooting arrows that are coated in poison to shooting poisoned arcane arrows, he really will start to become the archer he always wanted to be. tyftc!

I have been wondering when he will incorporate fangs and his arrows. I feel that with his new living bow that is an extension of his soul now will help with this issue. He will get the connection with his weapon in the same manor as the Sword Saint and his sword. I am very curious what he will build from all these stars. I am super curious as to what these sparring partners get out of these spars. Jake bleeds records like a sieve. Just a casual conversation can completely change one's path, for the better most times. If they teach and inspire Jake through these spars, they have to get major gains. Does the teaching skill work both ways or he just boosts everyone no matter what? Not complaining at all BTW. I just love the Ripple effects Jake's life causes. Most of these practice partners will probably get a blessing upgrade and tons of records from personal advice from their patron and a spar where they got to teach the Chosen something to for his path and the spar itself. Just look at what happened to the two hunters growth from that brief encounter even before he actually contacted them about dinner. They are surely going to be fun to read about next time.

I reckon there are a few possible upgrades hinted at: 1) His arrows being included in Fangs of Man. Which would also allow them to take advantage of his Blood and Arcane Affinity. 2) Both archers until now have specialized in one aspect of archery (strength/speed) and I think this trope will go on at least a little bit. It could be hinted at that he gains the ability to infuse his archery with a boost in a specific area, i.e. to increase strength or speed or precision of his archery, like a boosting skill but with adaptability and focus on just one ability, his archery.

Problem is that it has already been established how powerful Jake is and the allies he has. He is the leader of the Milky Way Galaxy, chosen of the powerful Malefic Viper, close friends with several other chosen of Primordials (most of which are on his planet), the harbinger of primal origin, patriarch of an extremely powerful bloodline which only two people know the full capability of, and intimately/romantically involved with several powerful people. Jake is essentially the most powerful mortal in the multiverse because of this, and that fact is known by everyone.

Zog is really dragging it out, but I can see why. If he has Jake move up the grades too quickly the series will come to a conclusion. It is hard to back track to get more content, probably wouldn't be as interesting either because you know that Jake would come out on top. Hard to have suspense when you already know the MC is alive. The story would have to have started with Jake telling his story of becoming a god rather than it being the progress of him doing so. This story is told as it being the present rather that it being the future talking about the past.

I don't think so on the monsters and weapons. They've made a point a couple times about how monsters don't gain a benefit from equipment and in the Villy vs Yip arc it was mentioned how those restrictions go away for gods.

I feel like of the two Jake is more likely to do that. Overlooking how something will be perceived. Artemis has been around, and been a goddess for long enough to not make that kind of mistake. Unless they are around other gods, that would be a more likely slip up.

Love the banter with Artemis. I wonder if there are monsters who use bows? After getting a lot of theoretical input via exposure to other archers, he could fight a strong C rank monster that uses archery. Or low b level? Maybe there is an orc who went down the archery path, I mean, the universe is freaking huge.

completely unrelated to the chapter, but when Jake goes back to earth he should have to be the super powerful scary guy again. one of my favorite moments was when he just stared the dude down at the world meeting and he straight up died lol

Honestly never thought about it but a low rarety archery skill really is bottlenecking our boy. It will probably result in the highest power boost in a while if he manages to upgrade his skill to at least ancient but I kinda hope he won’t stop until it reaches legendary Edit: I think many are underestimating the effort going into an upgrade to mythical. Just think about how much effort he’s putting into his upgrade of palate and yes while there is the fixing part too it’s still not in the slightest comparable to doing a few spars. Jake upgrades his combat skills usually in mortal danger so getting a mythical skill without something major happening would feel cheap

Keep the first ditch the second and third and changing the end to something like " the bow seemingly growing stronger with each passing second" "Just faster.In fact, " Missing space "arrow number ten? Fifty?*Hundredth*?" should be "one hundred". If you wanted the "th" at the end you'd need to have done something like "what about the tenth arrow? the fiftieth? the hundredth?" also missing spaces between the ? and the next letter. "probably shouldn’t be** taking his own state into account." missing comma. "skill he had *used* his own affinity." should be "using"
